The present invention relates to improvements 1n wrenches, the rimary ob ector the same bein to provi e a movable aw upon the shan of a stationary jaw which will be automatically forced toward the movable jaw, and the provision of means for sustaining the said sliding aw against such movement.
' The invention further resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forthin the following specificathe shank, the movable jaw being in the position illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. ' The shank 2 has, what ll will term, for the sake of convenience, its front face formed with a centrally arranged longitudinally extending depression or channel 5 which extends from the head of the wrench entirely through the shank; The handle 3 comprises a pairof members, the inner face of each being grooved or' recessed to receive the shank, and the inner faces of the said sections ofthe han are secured, to the shanleathrough the medium of ohe or more removable members 1n the nature-of screws, indicated by the numeral 6. The walls provided opposite the channel 5 be tween the head 1 and the handle 3 are formed with teeth 7, the said teeth comprising straight and angular walls, the angular walls inclining toward the head 1 of the wrench.
The movable jaw includes a head 8 which may have attached thereto or integrally formed therewith a carriage which comprises spaced longitudinally extending mem bers 9 and 10 respectively, the member 10 having its inner face formed-with teeth 11 which are adapted to co-act with the teeth 7 of the shank, while the numeral 12 designates members connecting the rail ends of the portions 9-and 1 0. The distance between the longitudinal members 9 and 10 is greater than the width or thickness ,pf the shank 2,
[so that-suficient play is provided to permit of the teeth of the member 9 being raised from engagement with the teeth 7 of the shank 2, and so permit the free movement of the movable jaw upon the shank of thestationary jaw. The member 10 has its inner end provided with a cam lock 13 which is formed with an ofiset finger hold or tail 14:, whereby the same may be operated by a {finger or thumb of a person using the wrench to swing the same into contact with the smooth face of the shank opposite that provided with the channel 5-and with the teeth 7. The member 9, as well as the head 8, is formed with a longitudinally extending depression 15 which is arranged over the channel 5, and secured to the wallproviding the said depression and approximately centrally thereof, is a depending removable element 16 to which is secured one. of the end 'convolutions of a helical spring 17. The
spring 17 is of a size to be received snugly within the channel 5 of the shank so as not to extend above the walls provided with the teeth 7, and the head 8 is provided with an opening 18 which registers with the channel 5, and which communicates wlth a smaller annular opening 19.
Arranged within the opening 19 1s a sleeve 22 that has a threaded bore 21, while arranged for rotation in a sleeve disposed 0pposite the sleeve 22 in the outer face of the opening 19 of the head 1 1s a headed threaded member 20. The member 20 engagingthe threaded bore 21 of the sleeve 22 serves as an adjusting member for the said sleeve. The sleeve has its inner and closed face provided with an e e 23, whereby the free end of the spring 1 is connected with the sleeve. It will be noted that by rotating the member 20, the sleeve 22 will be brought toward or away from the outer face of the head 1, and as a consequence the tension of the spring 17 will be adjusted.
Arranged Within the portion of the channel closed by the handle 3 is a spring arm 24, the same having an enlarged end 25 which is of a thickness equaling the width of the channel, and which is provided with an opening through which the securing element 6 passes, whereby the said spring 24 is retained within the channel 5. The spring arm 24 is provided adjacent its outer end with a stud 26, the said stud passing through an opening 27 in one of the side walls provided by the channel 5 in the shank 2, forward of the handle 3, and the said spring 24 is further provided with a finger 28 which passes through an opening in the side of the shank as well as through a re istering opening in one of the members 0% the handle 3, both the stud 26 and the finger 28 being arranged at a similar angle to and upon the same side of the flat spring member 24. The finger 28 is arranged for convenient operation by the user of the wrench, and it will be noted that a pressure thereon, in the direction of the handle 3, will cause the stud 26 to be retracted within its opening 27 so as not to pro'ect beyond the face of the shank. One 0 the end connecting members 12 s provided with an opening 29 which, when the movable jaw 4 is slid in the direction of the handle, is adapted to receive the stud 26, and so vhold the movable jaw 4: against the handle 3 and away from the head 1. A pressure upon the finger 28, however, will retract the stud 26 and permit of the spring 17 drawingvthe head 4 toward the head 1, and into engaging position with an article arranged between the heads 1 and 8. As has been stated, the distance between the members 9 and 10 is suflicient to permit of the movement of the jaw 4 in either di rection upon the shank, so that when an obstacle is enga-ged'between the heads 1 and 8 a pressure upon the shank will cause the carriage of the movable jaw to tilt to bring the same into binding engagement with the shank 2, but in practice I have found it desirable to employ the cam latch or lock 13, as previously described.
The inner front face of the member 9 of the carriage of the movable jaw 4 is beveled or inclined, as indicated by the numeral 30, the said portion 30 extendin beyond the members 12, and the handle 3 as one of its ends beveled or inclined, as at 32, the said inclined wall 32 adapted to receive a round wall 31 provided in the lower face of the member 30 to elevate the carriage of the movable jaw and raise the teeth 11 out of engagement with the teeth 7, and also to bring the opening 29 of the member 12 in proper position to receive the stud 26. Also in its retracted position.
The head 8 of the movable jaw 4 is provided upon its opposite sides, with tongues 50 which are adapted to be received within grooves 51 formed upon the rear recessed face of a block 52. The block has its outer face inclined and toothed, and is provided within one or both of its grooves 51, with a spring strip 52 which is adapted to bear against the tongues 50 to retain the block 52 upon the head 8. The block 52 is em-,
ployed when the wrench is to be used' upon pipes, rods, etc., and, as will be rea ily noted, is easily and quickly detached from the head 8 when not required for use.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanymg drawings, the simplicity of the device as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be
perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such inventions appertain'without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what- I claim is:
1. In a wrench, a stationary jaw provided I I with a channeled shank, the side walls of the channel having their edges formed of transverse teeth, a movable jaw'including a head and a carriage arranged upon the shank, said carriage having teeth w ich coact with the teeth of the shank, a member upon the carriage arranged within the channel, a helical spring connected with the said member, adjustable means arranged upon.

3. A wrench including a stationary jaw having a shank and-a handle connected with the shank, the said shank being provided with teeth, a movable jaw upon the shank, said movable jaw including a shank which is provided with teeth which co-act with the teeth of the shank, spring means for sliding the head of the movable jaw toward the head of the stationary jaw, and means arranged within the handle and co-acting with the carriage of the movable jaw for locking the said jaw, and means arranged upon the carriage and co-acting with the handle for elevating the carriage to bring the teeth of the said carriage out of engagement with the teeth of the shank when the carriage is moved into locking position.
