SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 516,873, dated March 20, 1894.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, TIMOTHY O. MURPHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window or Door Screens; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has relation to door and window screens, and among the objects sought to be attained by my invention are to provide a door and window screen which will permit of flies or other insects finding ready egress from the room through said screen with no liability of said insects returning into the room; also, to provide my improved screen with means whereby it is adapted to be applied to doors or windowsvarying in width; also, to provide means whereby the screen may be readily raised and lowered and be held during such movements; also, to provide the screen with supports for the window sash when the latter has been raised; also, to provide a screen which is simple, neat and inexpensive in construction, and readily operated, all as will presently appear.

With the above recited and other minor objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illus trated in the accompanying drawings and pointed; out in the appended claim.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved screen in its preferred form; Fig. 2, a vertical section thereof; Fig. 3, a detail perspective view of a portion of my screen showing one of the guides for the same; Fig. 4, a detail front view of a portion of my screen showing the means provided for covering the edges of the rubber strips.

It is well known that insects and more especially flies when in a room will seek the light, and alighting upon a body naturally crawl upwardly thereon, and my improved screen having as one of its objects to permit the ready egress of insects from a room, is con-' structed with a view to taking advantage of the described tendency of such insects, and

for this purpose I employ the screen shown in the drawings, which screen I will now describe.

A indicates the improved door and window screen which comprises the three-sided rectangular frame A made of a size approximating the dimensions of the door or window to which it is to be applied. To the upper ends of the frame is secured a strip or top-piece A for a purpose presently described.

Suitably secured at its lateral edges to the frame A in a vertical plane intermediate the front and rear edges of the frame is a wire screen section B, the upper edge of the same being somewhat below the top-piece A so as to leave an opening b, for the egress of insects that may alight upon the inner side of said section B, and the lower edge of the said section is somewhat below the horizontal median line of the frame.

Secured at its lower and lateral edges to the outer side of the frame is a second wire screen section B arranged in a different vertical plane from the section B so as to provide a space 12', intermediate the two for the egress of insects that may alight upon the inner side of said section B. The upper edge of the latter section is somewhat above the lower edge of the section B. If desired a strengthening strip A may be secured to the frame below the top piece A For the purpose of providing a support for the lower sash of the Window when it is raised I provide small plates 0 which are pivoted to the piece A upon its under side, said plates being thus adapted to be moved beneath the piece A as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 to permit the raising of the lower sash, and then to be swung outwardly beneath the latter in position to support the same.

In order to adapt my screen for application to doors or windows of varying sizes I secure to the lateral edges of the screen frame, rubber or elastic cloth strips D extending the full height of the frame and being secured thereto by narrow strips of molding d, as seen in Fig. 4, thus making a neat appearance. The lower edge of the section B and the upper edge of the section B may be strengthened or braced by means of wires E attached to the said screen sections, and the lateral edges of the said sections as well as the ends of the said wires may be secured upon and to the sides of the frame in the usual manner by tacking the same to said sides or in any other desired manner.

If it be desired to adapt the screen to be raised and lowered within the window opening I provide the rectangular metallic guides G secured to the window frame upon each side, the open side of the guides being adjacent to the screen frame, and the latter being inserted between said guides and adapted to be raised and lowered therein. This arrangement enables the screen frame to be cutto the dimensions of a smaller sized window and yet use the guides in connection with said frame and window, which is not the case with the grooved frame and narrow wooden guides. Many minor changes might be made in the construction and arrangement of my screen Without departing from the principle involved.

The advantages attained by my invention will be readily apparent from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.

That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In awindow or doorscreen, the combination with the screen frame A, of the strip A arranged horizontally across and secured to the sides of the frame, the vertical screen section B secured to the sides of the frame and extending somewhat below the horizontal median line of the same, the upper edge of the screen being arranged below the under side of the strip A whereby to form an opening 1), a vertical screen section B arranged in rear of the screen section B, and extending somewhat above the horizontal median line of the frame and the lower edge of the said section B whereby to form an opening I), a strengthening strip secured to the sides of the frame upon the front face thereof, and strengthening wires E secured to the lower edge of the section B and the upper edge of the section'B said wires having their ends secured to the sides of the frame and sash supports consisting of plates 0 O pivoted to the strip A upon the under side of the same and adapted to be swung outwardly so as to project beyond the rear edge of the window screen and to be swung also into a position beneath the strip A clear of the said rear edge of the frame, for the purpose specified.
