To all ywhom it may concern Be it known that l, JOHN F. OCoNNoR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State `of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Draft-Rigging for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in draft rigging for railway cars.
The object of my invention is to provvide a draft rigging having a compression resisting member adapted to afford an easy preliminary movement in the operation of the draft rigging.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification AFigure 1 is a side elevation partly in vertical longitudinal section on line 1-1 of Fig. 2 of a draft rigging for railway cars embodying my invention. Fig.A 2 is a plan view partly in horizontal section on line 2 2 of F ig. 1 showing the parts in normal position. Fig. 3 is a plan view partly in horizontal section showing the position of parts in pulling movement of the draft rigging with the preliminary springs fully compressed, and the compression resisting member within the friction shell. in normal position. Fig. 4 is a plan vView partly in horizontal section showing the pov sition of theparts of the draft rigging unl der full compression in pulling movement. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the rear end of the friction shell. Fig. (3 is a perspective view of one of the preliminary springs.

Within the transverse opening 24 of the draft yoke 19 is disposed the front follower' 25 and the draft gear 26. The draft adapted to spread the said shoes and antifriction rollers 34, there being one of .said antifriction` rollers inclosed between each friction slroe and the wedge. The wedge is forwardly provided with the recess 35 to receive the headSG of the connecting rod ,37, which passes through the wedge and through the rear member 28 of the lfriction shell, which isprovided with the recess 38 to receive the nut 39 of the said connecting rod. .The said plate 28 of the shell is outwardl7 extended transversely of the shell,
'and is preferably rectangular in shape, as
illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings, having in preferable construction the top and -bottom reinforcing members '40 extended along the surface of the shell and preferably integral therewith, and the lateral reinforcing ribs 41, which are preferably integral withv the shell and the said transverse plate 28. The member 28 is provided at either side with an angular flange 42 forming a recess 43 at either end of said plate, adapted to receive the ends 44 of the preliminary spring 45. l Oneof said lianges 42 is provided with a slot 46, which is adapted to permit the passage of a preliminary spring there through in assembling thesame in its posi` tion at therear end of the shell.
The preliminary spring 45 in'itsnormal position is curved rearwardly, the forward face 47 thereof in normal position being concave, and the rearward face 48 in normal position being convex. The said preliminary -spring 45 preferably consists of a plurality of leaf springs of substantially identical form and dimensions, each being curved, llaving'a concave forward face and a convex rearward face, as illustrated in F ig. 6 of the drawings.
