WALTER BRETWALDA BRETT, OF KELVEDON, ENGLAND.
TRAY FOR PRINTING-TYPE, PRINTING-BLOCKS, AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2, 1915.
Application filed December 1, 1914. Serial No 875,020.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER BRETWALDA BRETT, a subject of the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and resident of Kelvedon, Essex, England, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Trays for Printing-Type, Printing- Blocks, and the like, of which the following is a specification.
The article of manufacture forming the subject of this invention is a metallic tray for the reception of printing type, printlng blocks and associated articles, said tray being readily portable and being more practical than the cumbersome wooden trays at present employed in the printing trade.
The invention is illustrated in perspective in the accompanying drawing.
A tray according to the invention is formed from a sheet metal blank of substantially rectangular form, upturned along three edges to form flanges 1, 2, presenting the sides and back of the tray. The flanges 1, 2, are further overturned into a plane substantially parallel with the base 3 of the tray so as to present a guard for the upper The rear flange 2 is united with the lateral flanges 1 by mitering the corners and welding them together at 4 to form flush joints. By virtue of the construction described a rigid tray of considerable capacity to support type is provided. To the lower side of the unbent edge is secured a lip 6 which serves as a support for the galley when it is desired to transfer the type to the tray. The inner corners 7 of the lip 6 are preferably mitered and the eX posed ends 8 are of the flanges l correspondingly mitered, so that on the trays being superposed the mitered corners 7 of the lip 6 will enter the gap between the ends 8 of the flanges 1 of the tray below.
It will be understood that in the tray described, more space is provided for the type than was possible with the usual thick wooden trays having the same external dimensions, a considerable saving in storage space is eflected and the danger of fire eliminated, while the surface of the type is protected from contact with superposed trays by the guard constituted by the overhanging portion of the flanges 1, 2.
If desired, the metal from which the trays are formed may be subjected to any known treatment for the prevention of corrosion.
The tray is very suitable for use in the confectionery and biscuit-making trades and the like.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
As an article of manufacture, a metallic tray comprising a base, sides and a back presented by flanges disposed substantially perpendicularly to said base, a guard extending inwardly and disposed substantially parallel with the base, said guard being mitered at the ends adjacent to the unbent edge of said base, and a lip secured to the unbent edge of said base and formed with mitered corners registering with the gap between the mitered ends of said guard, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
IVALTER BRETWALDA BRETT.
Witnesses:
I. J. WORTH, H. D. JAMIsoN.
