Description

UNITED STATES PATENT FEICE.
HENRY ESSEX, OF MEADVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN LOCKE'D COCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 112,910, dated March 21, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY ESSEX, of Meadville, county of Crawford, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Locked Cocks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in providing the plug with holes crossing each other at right angles,to be used in combination with such other devices as will be hereinafter fully set forth, for the purpose of locking the stopcock either when closed or open.
In order to enable -others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referrin g to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l represents my invention when locked open. Fig. 2 is a view of the plug, and Fig. 3 is a View of the key.
A represents the socket, and B the plug of a stop-cock, constructed in anyl of the known and usual ways.
Through the plug B are two holes, D D, crossing each other at right angles, as shown.
Through the socket A are two holes, E, opposite each other, and corresponding with one of the holes D through the plug, so that a key,
O, may be passed th rough both the socket an dl plug, and consequently lock the stop-cock.
The plug having two holes crossing,` each other at right angles, it may, of course, be
turned so as to make either of said holes correspond with the holes in the socket, and hence it is evident that the stop-cock may be locked by the insertion of the key either when it is open or closed.
. A padlock, F, is passed through a hole in the end of the key O,to prevent its withdrawal and consequent unlocking of the stop-cock, except by the proper person.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by
