Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2%, 1915.
Application filed August 3, 1914. Serial No. 854,676.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ToMo BASREK, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail- Joints, 01" which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to rail joints and has for its object to provide a pair of track rails with means in a manner as hereinafter set forth, for detachably connecting the opposing ends or" the rails together, without the employment of nuts and bolts, at the same time providing for the necessary contraction and expansion of track rails due to climatic influences.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically de scribed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment or" the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views :Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the opposing ends of a pair of track rails showing the same connected together in accordance with this invention to provide the joint between the rails. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, illustrating a pair of track rails connected together in accordance with this invention. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one end of one of the track rails.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 and 2 denote a pair of track rails and the former includes a head 3, web 4: and base 5, and the latter includes a head 6, web 7 and base 8. The web 4:, as well as the web 7., greatly decreases in thickness from its base to its respective head.
The head 6 of the rail 2, is cut away for a portion of its length to the web 7 thereby providing the top edge 9 of the web 7 to constitute a seat. Formed integral with the top edge 9 of the web 7 is a pair of tongues 10, 11. The former is arranged at the end of the web 7, while the latter is positioned at one end of the head 6.
The web 7, as well as the base 8, of the rail 2 at one end, is cut away to form a fiat seat 12, formed with a pair of spaced tongues l3, 14. The opposing sides of the tongues 13, 14-, are oppositely beveled as at 15, 16.
The opposing ends of the tongues 10, 11 are oppositely beveled as at 17 18.
That end of the rail 1 which opposes the cut away end of the rail 2 has its head 3 extended to constitute a projection 19, which is adapted to be mounted upon the edge 9 of the web 7 and which is positioned in alinement with the head 6 of the rail 2. The lower face of the projection 19, is formed with a tongue 20 which seats be tween the tongues 10, 11 and the said lower face of the projection 19 is furthermore provided with pockets 21 and 22 to receive the tongues 10, 11.
The base 5 of the rail 1 is cut away to overlap the seat 12 as at 23 and the said overlapping portion has depending therefrom a tongue 24 which is seated between the tongues 13, la and the said lower face of the over-lapping portion 23 is furthermore provided with a pair of pockets 25, 26,
to receive the tongues 13, 1d.
The head 6 is formed with a longitudinal pocket 27, to receive a pin 28, carried by the projection 19, and the said pocket 27 has the pin 28 extending therein when the rails are in position The opposing end of the track rail 1 is constructed similar to that of the end of the track rail 2, as illustrated and that end of the track rail 2, which is not shown, is constructed similar to that end of the track rail 1 which is illustrated.
What I claim is The combination of a pair of track rails, one of said rails having a portion of its head cut away to its web to form a seat and having a portion of its web and base. cut away to provide a lower seat, each of said seats being formed with a pair 01 spaced tongues, the other of said rails having a portion of its base under cut to overlap said lower seat and further being formed with a tongue extending between the tongues of the lower seat and further being provided with a pair of pockets to receive the tongues of said lower seat, said second mentioned rail having a projection extending from its head, said projection overlapping said upper seat and further provided with a tongue extending between the tongues of the upper seat and having pockets for the tongues of the upper seat, said tongues arranged in a1ine-' In testimony whereof I afiix my signature nFnisl Wifith the heads (if said rails, the hgad in the presence of two itnesses.
