My invention relates to new and useful improvements in rail joints and more particularly to rail joints of the chair type; and the object of my invention is to provide a rail joint having a base plate and an integrally formed splice bar bearing against one side of the rail ends. a second splice bar adapted to be secured against the other side of the rail ends and a key plate for lock,v ing the secon splibar in position, thereby securing the 1 ril ends against both vertical and transverse movement.
A further objectof my invention is to so construct the separable splice bar as to provide a head which will bear beneath and against the outer face of, the heads of the rail ends to additionally brace the same.

invention will be more fully described. illustrated in the accompanying drawings and then specifically pointed out in the claims which are attached to and form apart of this application.

Figure l is a perspective view of my improved rail joint in use; Fig. 2' is a vertical transverse section taken through the rail joint; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of the parts making up the joint.
For the sake of clearness I have illustrated 'the rail joint in use. the ties being shown at 10 and the abutting rail ends at 11. The joint proper consists primarily of a base plate 12 having an integrally formed splice bar 13, a second splice bar 11 and a key plate 15.-
The base plate 12 is so proportioned as to form a seat for the base of the rail ends and to extend at its free edge considerably beyond the outer rail fiang the length of the base plate being such as to seat upon two or more ties. This base plate 12 is provided at its. inner edge with the integrally formed splice bar 13 which is shaped to conform with the inner face ofthe rail ends having an inwardly directed portion which engages over the inner flange of the rail and which terminates in an upwardly directed portion which tears at its upper andlower edges against the web of the rail and the free edge of which bears beneath the inner portion bf the head of the rail as shown at 16. splice bar is provided with a pluralita o spaced bolt receiving bores 17, and the rail ends are provided with similarly positioned bores 18.

which bears beneath and against the outer face of the heads of the rail ends. as best shown in Fig. 2. This splice bar 14 is provided with bores 20 which, when the splice bar is in position, are in alincment with the bores 18 of therail and the bores 17 of the splice bar 13. The base plate 12 is provided imniedi atelyadjacent the lower end of the low'" edge of the splice bar 11 with a plurality longitudinally spaced apart slots 21, and the key plate. previously designated by the nu I meral 15. is provided at its lower edge with similar spaced apart, downwardly and outwardly directed toes 22 adapted tobe in- 39 serted through the slots 21 and to engage! against the portions of the base plate lying between said slots and the free edge of the plate, as best shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. This key plate is shaped to conform 9- 21 in alinement with the bores of the splice bars and ,rail ends, and when swung to active posiion the splice bars, key plate, and rail ends are all secured against independent movement by bolts '25 passing through the alined bores of said members and provided with clamping nuts 26.
The rail joint is preferably secured in place upon the ties by means of the customary spikes :27. and the free edge of the base plate 1:2 may be provided with spaced recesses 28 for the reception of these spikes. the engagement of the spikes against the sides of the recesses preventing all longitudinal creeping of the rail joints.
As will be readily seen, the splice bars be- 1m ing stiil'ened by the base plate and key plate absolutely prevent all transverse movement ofthe rail; ends, while the base plate being stifiened by the other members of the joint plevents all other movement, any downward movement of the rail ends being prevented by the seating of the heads of the rail ends upon theup'per edge of the splice bar 13 and in the head 19 of the splice bar 14.
The engagement of the toes 22 of the key plate with the base plate 12 braces the rail ends against 'turning and thereby relieves abutting rail ends, ofa base plate having" longitudinally spaced slots formed adjacent one edge,- a splice bar forined integrally with one edge 'ofthe'base plate and bearing against one side of the ,rail ends and be neath the heads of the rails, a detachable splice bar bearing against the opposite side of the rail ends and provided with an outwardly and upwardlyfdirected, longitudi nally grooved head. in which and against which the adjacent sides of the heads of the rail seat, a key plate with toes formed thereon'for engagement with said slots, said key plate bearing against the outer face of the second-named splice bar, and bolts passed through the key plate, splice bars and rail' webs to secure the parts together.
