To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, FRANK MARINIGS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Expedit, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to rail joints, and the primary object of my invention is to furnish a tie with a novel'chair for supporting the confronting ends of rails, whereby the rails cannot become accidentally displaced.
Another object of this invention is to obviatethe necessity of using bolts and nuts for connecting splice bars to the sides of rails.
A further objectof this invention is to provide a strong and durable chair that can be easily and quickly placed in position upon a tie for supporting the ends of rails.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a tie showing a rail chair mounted thereon and supporting rails. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same, and Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of the tie and rail chair.
The reference numeral 1 denotes an ordinary wooden tie and mounted upon each end of the tie is an oblong rail chair 2 for supporting the base flanges 8 of abutting rails 4. The inner end of the chair 2 has an integral inner fastener 5 provided with a splice bar 6 that braces the inner sides of the rails 4, said splice bar having transverse equally spaced openings 7. The inner fastener 5 is recessed, as at 8 and provided with an opening 9 for a spike 10, by which the inner end of the chair is secured to the tie 1. The walls of the recess 8 protect the head of the spike 10 and prevent the same from being cut or sheared off by the dragging operation of rolling stock. The outer end of the chair 2 has a longitudinal enlargement 11 provided with a transverse tapering key groove 12 and with a longitudinal groove 13 that is inverted T-shaped in cross section, or dovetail. The groove 13 receives the tongue 14 of an outer fastener 15, said fastener having an integral splice bar 16 provided with equally spaced pins 17. The pins 17 extend through the openings 18 provided therefor in the webs of the rails 4, said pins extending into the openings 7 of the splice bar 6.
The transverse groove 12 provides clearance for the tongue 14 of the outer fastener 15, whereby said tongue can be shifted into the groove 13 after the outer fastener has been placed in position, and a tapering key 19 is driven into the groove 12, said key having the inner end thereof provided with an open pocket 20.
Connected to one side of the enlargement 11, as at 21, is a resilient or malleable hook 22 that engages in the open pocket 20 and locks the key 19 within the groove 12.
The enlargement 11 is recessed, as at 23 and provided with an opening 2 1 to receive a spike 25 that retains the outer end of the chair upon the tie 1.
It is thought that the manner of assembling the rall chair and its utility will be apparent without further description, and while in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible of such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
