t Letters Patent No. 112,320, dated March' 7, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN nooR-sEcuREns.
The Schedule Vreferred to in thesf'yiettes partei the same.
`I, WILLIAM H.- CALDWELL, of Wheeling', in the `county of Ohio and the State of West Virginizahave invented a new and improved Portable Door-Fastener, ot which the following is a specification, reference be` ing Vhad to the accompanying .drawing and the letters of reference thereon.
My invention relatesto that class of portable dooie;
fasteners usedfor the purpose of securely fastening the door from the inside ofthe room, the same being 'detached froni4 the door and its frame when not so used, and consists of two elastic plates, connected to-v gether at one end, so that one will' form an acute angle with the other,the datter being longer than 'the formen'with an opening in itsend to admit of the insertion of a short bar therein, the former or short one having, on its outside, one or more .pivots `or y studs.
The drawing is a perspective view ot' the complete fastener. e
A is the long elastic plate, with the bar aperture e iu its end.
` -B is the short plate, connected with the former at an acute angie, with its studs c c c on its outside.
'D is the-detachable bar or'rod, now inserted in the I will now describe a method of making Take a piece of. thin steel or good iron of proper lengthA and breadtl1 .andbendit so as to form the lng and short plates, as h'ereinbefore described. Put the studs c c c on the short plate by riveting the saine thereto, and punch the long plate the bar opening;`
and it'is ready for use by inserting the bar.
Of course there are various other ways of doing the same which would readily suggest themselves to the skilled mechanic.
The' manner of using it is thus: y Place the studded plate against the door-frame, shut `the door, and insert the bar.
When so adjusted, the studs are forced more or less into thedoor-i'rame, so that anyattenipt'to openY the`dor, not extremely violent, would he useless.
By the use of two elastic plates constructed as herein described, this fastener is adapted to doors having cracks of greater or lesser ex-tent between the door and frame; in other words, it will adjust itself to the cracksot' doors, which would not be the case if but one plate was used.
This device will be found effective for thc intended i use, simple and cheap in construction, and easily carried in ones pocket while traveling.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is y n A portable doori`astener, consisting of the elastic plate A'with the ,aperturec therein, studded plate l, and bar I). substantially as and for the purpose hercin set forth.
