WITNESSES INVENTOR %muz wu [Em/V 6 E157 I ATTORNEYS 'HL' NweRls PETERS CO PNHHT 1 v THO. WASHING KN D L EDWIN GRAY EAST, OF RAPI-IINE, VIRGINIA.
. SOAP-HOLDER.
Application filed November 6, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN G. EAST, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Raphine, in the county of Rockbridge .and State of Virginia, have made certain new and useful improvements in Soap- Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to soap holders, andone of the principal objects thereof is to provide a holder having jaws adjustable relatively to each other for grasping various sized cakes of soap.
A further object is to provide a device for holding a cake of soap, whereby the soap may be conveniently, satisfactorily and economically used, and by means of which the annoyance of not being able to retain the soap in the hand is removed. 20 i Another object is to provide an improved soap holder and one which will be simple, durable, eliicient in operation and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, which will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several figures, of which,
Figure 1 illustrates a perspective view of the holder, the handle and guard plate being removed. Fig. 2 represents a top plan view of the holder, a portion of the plate and handle being shown positioned thereon, the remainder of the plate and handle being broken away. Fig. 3 represents a side elevational view of the device, a cake of soap being indicated by dotted lines, and Fig. 4 represents a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.
The holder com-prises a pair of substantially U-shaped jaws 5 and 6, formed of metal or other suitable material, and disposed oppositely to each other, the lower edge of each jaw being provided with teeth 7, engaging in the ends of a cake of soap, as
' illustrated in Fig. 3.
The jaw 5 is secured at right angles to one end of an adjusting bar 8, which is substantially T-shaped in cross section. Said bar has a pair of lugs 9 formed one at each Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 29, 1914. Serial No. 799,488.
end thereof, and said lugs are connected by the web of the bar and act as stops to limit the movement of slide 10, provided with interned flanges 11 engaging the edges of the adjusting bar, one of said flanges pro vided at its upper edge with a lug 12 for receiving a set screw 13, whereby the slide may be adjusted longitudinally of the adjusting bar. The upper portion thereof, a pair of converging arms 14 which are connected in any suitable manner at their ends opposite jaw 6 to the slide 10, whereby the jaw 6 may be adjusted relatively to the jaw 5.
Positioned on the lugs 9 above the jaws, is a substantially rectangular plate or guard 15 composed of rubber or other suitable material, and the guard is provided with a pair of openings threaded recesses 16 in lugs 9 for receiving screws 17, which secure the guard in place, and also pass through the inturned ends to strips 18 and 19 of suitable material which may be lined the strip 19 being provided with a toothed buckle 21 in which the strip 18 is adapted to be engaged whereby the strips may be adjusted. Said strips form a hand loop to be engaged over the hand of an operator using the holder.
The guard 15 will prevent the hand of the operator from coming in accidental contact with the soap, and will also prevent accidental unloosening of the screw 13, so
that the soap will be retained in position in the holder until used down as far as the jaws.
Although I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I may desire to make such changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of the parts thereof as do not depart from the spirit of the invention, and the scope of the appended claims.
I claim 1. A soap holder comprising an adjusting bar T-shaped in cross section, and having a lug at each end thereof, a substantially U-shaped jaw provided with teeth along one edge thereof, said jaw secured to one end of said adjusting bar, a slide adjustable on said bar and carrying a set screw adapted to engage the web of the bar, a second jaw similar to first said jaw and disposed oppositely thereto, converging arms connecting said second jaw to said jaw 6 has formed at the registering with the as at 20 with rubber,
said jaws, a-nd an adjustable curved loop having its ends bent inwardly and secured to said plate at opposite ends thereof.
2. A soap holder comprising an adjusting bar, a jaw secured immovably to one end thereof, said bar and jaw being fixed with relation to each other,
a slide carried by the bar and adjustable thereon, a second jaw, and arms connecting said second jaw and" slide.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five centseach, by addressing the Gommissionerot Patents,
3. A soap holder comprising a bar, a
stationary jaw, a movable jaw slidably con- 15 means for ad usting nected with the bar,
said movable aw longitudinally of the bar,
means for limiting'the movement of said movable aw, guard means over said aws,
and means for aiding the manipulation of 20 the holder by an operator.
