Description

C. O. JOHNSON.
METAL WORKING TOOL.
APPLICATION nuzo JULY 26.19n.
Patented Mar. 19, 1918.
INVENTQR 61ml a Jolzwam ATTO R N EY 1VIETAL-WOBKING TOOL.
Application filed July 26, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL O. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jefferson, in the county of Jefferson and State of l Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal-Working Tools, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to metal working tools and more particularly to metal workers tongs. The principal object of the in vention is the provision of a tool which is simple and inexpensive in construction and which is particularly adapted for bending metal for various purposes.
Another object of the invention is the pro vision of an adjustable gage whereby the work will be bent uniformly.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel details of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more clearly understood from the following description and drawing in which,
Figure 1 is a top plan.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing a transverse section through the jaws and gage on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a fragmental bottom plan.
In the drawings the numerals 1 and 2 indicate a pair of handles or levers which are crossed and pivotally connected at 3. The lever or handle 1 is provided with a jaw 4.- and the handle or lever 2 is provided with a similar jaw 5. An elongated plate 6 is secured to the top of the jaw 4 and an elongated plate 7 is connected to the lower side of the jaw 5. The plate 7 is adapted V to overlie the plate 6 and the front end is bent downwardly to form a flange or ridge indicated at 8. The plates 6 and 7 are secured to the jaws by means of rivets or bolts indicated at 9 more particularly in Figs; 1 and 3 of the drawings.
Guides 10 are secured to the plate 6 and extend a distance from the rear edge thereof. These guides are preferably formed of a strip of wire bent to form two arms the ends of which are connected to the plate 6 by means of rivets or other suitable fastening means indicated at 11. While, as stated, they are preferably constructed of wire it will be understood that they could equally Specification of Letters Patent.

as well be made from a strip or plate of metal having an elongated opening therein.
A gage is adapted to be carried by the guides and overlie the plate 6 and this gage comprises a plate 12 which is preferably of less length than the plates 6 and 7 as is more clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
.The plate 12 is provided with the cut-away portion indicated at 13 whereby the plate may be adjusted without interference from the crossed levers or handles 1 and 2. Bolts 14 are carried by the plate 12 and project laterally from one face of the plate 12 and extend through the guide members 10. Nuts 15 are adapted to be received upon the threaded bolts and engage the adjacent face of the guides for holding the gage plate 12 in adjusted position.
As stated in the objects of the invention my tool is particularly adapted for bending metal for various uses and particularly adapted for turning the edges of metal for forming flanges for seams or the like. In bending the edges of metal it is desired to secure a flange of uniform width, and I have provided, for this purpose, the adjustable gage which may be adjusted for bending the metal at points located a greater or less degree from the edge thereof. When in use the handles 1 and 2 are separated thereby separating the jaws 4 and 5. The work to be bent is placed between the plates 6 and 7 and the downturned edge or flange 8 on the plate 7 will securely grip the metal to be bent and hold it in position against slipping, when the handles are pressed together. The gage plate 12 may be adjusted by releasingthe nuts 15 so that the plate may be slid. When in the desired position the nuts 15 are again tightened so as to engage the under side of the guides whereby the plate 12 will be securely held. As previously stated the gage plate overlies the plate 6 and by providing the down turned edge or flange 8 on the plate 7 the plates are separated a sufficient distance to-allow the admission of the gage plate 12 therebetween while at the same time providing an efiective grip of the plate edges at the bending point. The out out portion 13 on the rear edge of the plate 12 allows the plate 12 to be adjusted without interference from the crossed levers or handles 1 and 2 and thus permits the fulcrum of said levers to be located near the gripping edge of the jaw plates.
ters Patent is l. The combination with metal workers" tongs; of fulcrumed levers provided with handles at one end and jaws at their other ends, metal clamping plates fixed to said jaws and extending laterally on opposite sides thereof, guide elements extending rearwardly from one of said plates on opposite sides of said jaws and each having an elongated opening therein, a gage plate located between said clamping plates and carrying bolts for adjustable insertion in the open ings of said guides, and means for fixing said bolts in adjusted position relatively to said guides, whereby the gage plate is locked in adjusted position.
'2. The combination with metal workers .jaws and extending laterally on opposite sides thereof, guide loops secured at one end to one of said clamping plates and project- 111g beyond its rear edge, a gage plate 10- I cared between said clamping plates and carrying bolts for insertion through said loops, and nuts on said bolts for fixing them in adjusted position relative to said loops whereby the gage plate is securely fixed in adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature witnesses.
