CHARLES W..1VIUELLER, or JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
To aZZ whom 'it'may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. MUELLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey,'have invented a neW and Improved Drinking-Fountain for Poultry, of which the following is a full,-clear,
and exact description.
Among the principal objects which the present inventionhas in view are: to provide a .fountain of the characterdescribed having means provided in the drink-ingpan for preventing the spilling or slopping over of the water contained therein; to provide a fountain of the character described so constructed as to facilitate thefilling and closing of the fountain; and to provide means for suspending or otherwise anchoringv the fountain 1n operative 'POSltlOIl.
One embodiment of the present invention is disclosed in the structure illustrated in.
the accompanying drawings, in which like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a drinking fountain constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the fountain showing the parts in separated position; and Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section of the fountain taken on the median line.
As shown in the accompanying drawings,
when in the assembled and service position the fountain is provided with a reservoir 8.
The reservoir 8 is of cylindrical shape, and is provided with a screw threaded neck 9.
The threads formed on the neck 9 register with the threads 10 on the cover 11 provided for the reservoir 8. When the said reservoir is filled with the supply of Water for which it is provided it is inverted from the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the opening or neck 9 being upper- .most. When the reservoir is filled the cover 11 is screwed into position upon the said reservoir, when the same may be inverted to assume the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.
Attached to the cover 11 by means of the supporting rods 12, 12 is the drinking basin 13. The basin 13 is provided with a surrounding inwardly extended fiange or rim 14: which overhangs the vertical sides of the basin 13 and diverts the water toward the center of the'basin whenthe same is lifted, as by tilting the basin upward along the said Specification of Letters Patent. Patented D 15 1914 Application filed May 29, 1911. Serial No. 630,127. i I
DRINKING-FOUNTAIN FOR POULTRY.
Vertical wall. The rim 14 is shown as a stralght mm, It will be understood that this may be curved if desired to throw the water moresurely toward the center of the said basin 13. v
, Rigidly connected with the cover 11 is a pipe 15. The pipe 15 is constructed of a length to extend'below the high watermark desired in the basin 13, the'endof the said pipe; being sufiicientlysubmerged below the surface of-thewater to check, by hydrostatic pressure, the flow downward from the pipe 15 and the superposed reservoir 8.
Itwill be understood from the above description that the water originally supplied to the reservoir 8 flows downward through the pipe 15 into the'basin 13, and that. the water in the basin 13 is maintained at a constant level,.the water exhausted therefrom'being replenished by the water from the reservoir 8.
The drinking fountain thus constructed may be placedon the floor of a railway car, poultry house, or ground of a poultry yard. When fowl are shipped in crates it is desired that the fountain shall be further secured against being overturned by the crowding of the occupants of the crate, and for this purpose it is provided with rings 16 attached to the upper side of the reservoir 8, as'shown in the drawings. These rings are used as anchors for securing twine, straps or other fastening devices which are secured to the upper slats of the crate in any convenient position. It will be understood that if it is desired the straps and fastening devices may be employed to suspend the fountain, the basin 13 resting above the floor.
The handle 17 is suitably attached to the upper side of the reservoir 8. By means of the said handle 17 the drinking fountain is conveniently moved or carried from point to point, filled or empty.
.and parts connected therewith are then seshown in the drawings.
I from thereservoir into the basin.
cured in position, engaging the neck 9, when the construction is righted to the position The Water immediately runs from the reservoir 8 down the pipe 15 into the basin l3 until'the predetermined Water level has been established in the basin 13, when the hydro-static pressure of the exposed surface, of Water and the rarification of the air in the reservoir 8 above the Water therein contained, arrests the flow of Water from the reservoir to the basin. As the'chickens now use the Water in the basin 1?), partially exhausting the same, the supply is maintained by fresh Water flow-in When handling a fountain this constructed by means of the handle 17 01 the rings 16 the hydro-static column of Water is maintained constant and the Water is prevented from overflowing the edge of the side Walls of the basin 13, the rim 14 operating to I deflect or throw the Water to the center of the said basin.
I claim! i 1. A drinking fountain such as described, comprising a basin; a reservoir having an opening, the diameter whereof approximates the diameter of said basin; a cover for'said 1 Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each. by addressing the fGommi'ssioner oi Washington, D. 0.
opening; a plurality of supporting rodspermanently and rigidly connecting said basin and-said cover, said'supporting rods being spaced apart andof sufiicient height to provide room to permit poultry to drink from said ba-sin Without striking saidcover; and a supply pipe in said cover and pendant therefromto'extend adjacent the bottom of said basin.
2. A drinking fountain such as described,
comprising a basinya reservoir havingfan manently and rigidly connecting said basin,
and; said cover, said supporting rods being 7 spaced apart and of sufiicient height to pro vide room to permit poultry to .drink'from said basin Without striking .saidl cover ;a 1
supply pipe in said cover and pendant there from to extend adjacent the bottom 'oflsaid basin; and a plurality of hanging rings mounted upon the top of. saidreservoir for suspending said'fountain.
