P. BUDLONG. PAPER. Box OPENER.
APPLICATION FILED MAR.4, 1914.

FRANK BUDLONG, OFSHEFFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
PAPER-BOX OPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec, 15, 1914;.
Application filed March 4, 1914. Serial No. 822.413.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK BUDLONG, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Shetlield, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Paper-Box ()peners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to paper boxopeners; and it has; for its object the provision of a device of this character which may be freely operated over the surfaces of an ordinary paper box carton or the like and which will be provided with means whereby the cover of the box may be completely severed from the body of the box.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character having a blade in which the cutting edge thereof may be; projected for a distance necessary for its proper penetration to different thickness of material.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of means for limiting the penetration of the cutting blade into the mascribed and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a carton, showing the application of the opener thereto; and Fig. 2 is an inverted perspective view of the opener.
The opener consists of a body member constructed from a single length of material such as metal having two gripping handles 1 and 2 which occupy different relative planes. These handles are arranged substantially in parallel relation, .and as shown the handle 2 is connected with the handle 1 by means of a vertical offset 3 which serves as stops for a purpose to be hereinafter explained. The said stop is adapted to abut against'the side of the carton, as shown in Fig. 1 and the offset is provided with'a flat portion 4, which is adapted to rest directly against the top of the carton.
The said portion -l is then curved in an up ward direction, as at 5, into. the handle 1 and incident to this arrangement the mentioned handle 1 is adapted to lie iii-spaced relation to the top of the box so that when the hand of the operator grasps the handle 1, the hand may be held against contacting with the box. i
The handle :2 is provided with a portion (3, on which integral ribs 7 form an integral part. These ribs are spaced from each other, so as to provide thcrebetween an intervening guide for a flat blade 8. This blade is provided with a diagonally arranged cutting edge 9,'the extreme point 10 of which being adapted to be projected over and beyond the lower surface of the olfset or stop 3, so as to properly penetrate the side of the box. The blade is provided with a longitudinal slot 11, and as illustrated a set screw 12 passes through the slot and has threaded connection with the portion (iof the handle 2, and is designed as a'means to secure the blade against sliding movement. In view of this arrangement or manner of mounting the blade, it is seen that the cutting edge thereof may be projected to a distance that may be necessary to permit it to properly penetrate material of a known thickness whereby to permit the top of the box to be properly severed from the main body portion of the box, as will be understood.
In using the device, the handles are arranged as illustrated-in Fig. 1, causingthe portion 4 of the device to rest against the top of the box and the portion 3 to assume a position immediately at one side of the box. Movement in a lateral direction or toward the box is given the device to cause the extreme point of the blade to penetrate the material at'tho side of the box. The handles 1 and 2 are then gras wed by the hands of the operator and by pulling the device in the direction of the operator the knife will properly operate to cut the material and to finally cause the coverto be entirely severed from the body of the box. The offset portion or stop 3 is provided with a curved surface 12' which is adapted to bear against the box in a manner to minia diagonal cutting edge adapted to be ad- 10 mize the friction between the parts as the vanced beyond the said stop member.
knife is drawn around the box. In testimony whereof I affix my signature I claim: in presence of two Witnesses. A hon opener of the chz racter described FRANK BUDL0NG compusmg a member having two handles respectively occupying different positions, a Witneses: stop member connecting one of the handles EMMA W. MANVEL with the other, and a sliding blade having HENRY C. TALLERDY.
