Be it known that I, NEIL MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milton, county of Norfolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in a Combined Hammer and Knife, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.

This invention relates to a combination hammer and knife, and has for one of its objects to provide a claw-hammer with a knife-blade attachment which is connected thereto so that when the blade is in its inoperative position it is in line with, and is protected by, the claw of the hammer, said blade being movable into an operative position.

Another object of the invention is to provide a claw-hammer with a knife-blade attachment which is so constructed that the presence of the knife blade does not disturb or affect the balance of the hammer.

In performing his daily tasks a carpenter is frequently using both a hammer and a knife and as a result he is continuously laying down one implement in order to pick up and use the other. It not infrequently happens that in using one implement he has moved from the point where he begun to use it so that when he needs the other instrument he finds it some distance away. Then again, with two separate implements, such as the knife and the hammer, there is always the possibility that one or the other may become lost.

ment and picking up another when the work demands a change in the implements.

In the drawings 1 indicates a hammer head of the type having the curved claw portion 2. In'accordance with my invention I secure a knife blade 3 to the side of the claw.

The knife blade 3 is pivotally connected to the side of the claw in any suitable way, as by means of a stud or screw 4:, the latter passing through the end 5 of the knife blade and screwing into the hammer head at the base of the claw. A set-screw 22 is shown for locking the pivot screw 4 in position.

The blade is curved to correspond with the curvature of the claw, said blade having a convex back face 6 and a concave cutting edge 7. The knife is of such dimensions that when it is folded into its inoperative position the back edge 6 thereof comes flush with the back or convexly curved face 8 of the claw while the cutting edge 7 follows the concave face 9 of the claw but is pro tected thereby.

The claw portion of the hammer is preferably recessed in its side face as shown at 11 to receive the knife so that the ex posed side face 12 of the knife comes flush with the side face 13 of the hammer. The pivot screw 4 will preferably be countersunk so that it will be flush with the knife thus providing the hammer with a smooth surface.

The portion 5 of the blade through which the screw 4.- passes is preferably made in the form of a knuckle having a circular face and this knuckle fits into a curved recess 14: which forms part of the recess 11 of the hammer. Said recess 11 is provided with a stop shoulder 15 against which the portion 16 of the knife engages when said knife is folded. The stop 15 is so positioned that the back face 6 of the knife will be flush with the face 8 of the claw when the part 16 of the knife rests against the shoulder 15.

The point 17 of the knife is protected by means of a guard portion 18 at the tip of the claw, said guard portion being substantially flush with the exposed face of the knife. The construction is such that when the knife is folded with the part 16 thereof resting against the shoulder 15 the point of the knife will be slightly separated from the guard member 18. The reason for this is to avoid the possibility that the point of the knife will be dulled by being shut against the guard portion 18.

The knife blade is preferably made with the taper on the outer face 12, the face 19 of the blade preferably lying flatly against the face 10 of the recess 11. The knife blade may be opened by swinging it about its pivot 4 and the opening movement is limited by the engagementofthe back of the blade with the portion 21 of the hammer.

Fig. 4 shows the way in which the hammer may be manipulated when the knife is to be used for marking or for trimming shingles and the like. The operator will grasp the hammer head with his hand and use it as the handle of the knife.

I claim.

1. A combined hammer and knife comblade pivotally mounted in said recess, said blade having a conveXly-curved back ec ge corresponding to the conveXly-curved face of the claw and a concavely-curved cutting edge corresponding to the concavely-curved face of the claw, whereby when the blade is in closed relation the'cutting edge is pro tected by the claw, the face of said blade coming flush with the face of the hammer.

2. A combined hammer and knife comprising ahammer head having a claw provided with a recess in one side, and a knife blade pivotally mounted in said recess and having its side face flush with the side face of the hammer head, said knife blade having a curvature corresponding to that of the claw and being swingable from a closed position in line with the claw to an open position at an angle to the claw.

8. A combined hammer and knife comprising a hammer head having a claw provided with a recess in one side face, a knife blade pivotally mounted in said recess with the pivotal point at the base of the claw,

said blade having a conveXly-curved back edge corresponding to the convexly-curved face of the claw and a concavely-curved cutting edge corresponding to the concavelycurved face of the claw the side face of the knife coming flush with the side face of the hammer.

4. A combined hammer and knife comprising a hammer head having a claw provided with a recess in one side face, a knife blade pivotally mounted in said recess and having a convoXly-curved back edge correspondingto the convexly-curved face of the claw and a concavely-curved cutting edge corresponding to the concavely-curved face of the claw, said hammer head having a stop shoulder with which the knife blade engages when in its inoperative position and which positions the blade with its back edge flush with the convex faceof the claw.

5. A combined hammer and knife comprising a hammer head havinga claw provided with a recess in one side face,'a knife blade pivotally mounted in saidaecessand having a conveXly-curved back edge corresponding to the convexly-curved face of the claw and a concavely-curved cutting edge corresponding to the .concavely-curved face of the claw, said hammer head having a stop shoulder with which the knife :blade engages when in its inoperative position and'which positions the blade with its back edge flush with the convex face of the claw, the tip of the claw having a guard for protecting the point of the knife.

6. A combined hammer and knife comprising a hammer head havinga claw provided with a recess in one side face, aknife blade in said recess pivoted to the claw, the side face of the knife blade coming flush with the side face of thehammer, and said blade having a shape corresponding to [that of the claw.
