To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Oscar: H. Srunwn, a citizen of the United States, residing at M1lwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of \Visconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in VVoven-VVire Mattresses, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to that class of woven wire mattresses which are provided on their respective longitudinal sides with vertical side guards, which guards are adapted to retain a stuffed mattressin place upon the horizontal. portion of the woven wire fabric, and my present improvement pertains,more especially1st. to the device for connecting the horizontal portion of the woven wire fabric with the side guards, and 2nd. to the construction of the corner brackets, which brackets perform the two fold function of supporting the ends of the vertieal side guards and as shields over the severed ends of the angle bars, from wh ch the horizontal portion of the mattress is suspended.

My invention is further explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, 1n which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of one end of a woven wire mattress provided with my improvements, and Fig. 2.

1 is a woven wire fabric, which forms the horizontal portion of the mattress, which fabric is suspended at its respective ends from the horizontal end members, which end members comprise the angle bar 2 and the horizontal clamping plate 3, said fabric 1 being clamped at its ends between said angle bars and clamping plates by a plurality of rivets or bolts 4. The respective end members are rigidly supported at the required distances apart corresponding with the length of the mattress between a pair of supporting brackets 5 by a pair of tubular members 7, said end members being connected with said brackets 5 by the rivets or bolts 6, 6. tained in place upon the woven wire mattress 1 and said guards 10 are supported at their respective ends from the end members by and between the corner brackets 11 and the parallel vertical clamping plate 12, and said plate and bracket are rigidly secured together upon the respective sides of the guards 10 by the clamping bolts 13, 13. Tue brackets 11. thus used, perform the two fold function of clamps for supporting the ends of the guards 10 in a vertical position shown, and as shields over the severed ends of the angle bars 2, clamping plates 3 and the upper end of the clamping plate 12, whereby the liability of the bed clothes being torn by the rough severed ends of said members, as heretofore, is avoided.

The lower end of the bracket 11 is clamped to the vertical member 14: of the angle bar 2 by the clamping bolt 15. The bracket 11 is preferably provided at its upper end with a horizontal lip 15', which extends above the ends of the clamping plate 12, as shown in Fig. 2, whereby the upper endof said clamping plate 12 is shielded from contact, as stated. 16 represents the ordinary corner post of a bedstead to which the side rails 9 are secured by the supporting brackets 17 in the ordinary manner.

It is a well known fact that woven wire mattresses as ordinarily constructed, are liable to sag at their centers and at intermediate points between their ends and to prevent the mattress from thus sagging, I have provided the same with one or more transversely arranged rods 18, which rods pass through the coils of the woven wire fabric and are supported at their respective ends from the side guards 10 by the longitudinal rods 19, which rods 19 are in turn connected with and suspended from the lower edge of said guards 10. Thus it is obvious that by this arrangement, the side guards 10 perform the two fold functions of retaining the stuffed mattress in place upon the woven wire mattress and as trusses for supporting the respective ends of the transversely arranged rods 18, whereby the mattress is prevented from sagging at its center and at intermediate points between its ends. The horizontal rods 18 are respectively provided at their respective ends with circular loops 20, which surround and engage the horizontal rods 19, as more clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.

I am aware of the fact that vertical side guards have heretofore been used in connection with woven wire mattresses, and invention herein is predicated more especially upon the combination with said vertical side guards and mattress of the longitudinal rods 19, which are connected with the lower edge of said vertical side guards and the transversely arranged rods 18, which are supported at their respective ends from said rods 19 and serve to support the central portion of the mattress, and also to-the corner brackets 11 which are adapted to perform the two fold function of clamps for supporting the ends of the side guards and as shields for preventing contact with the roll 11 severed ends of the angle bars.

I aving thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a device of the described class, the combination with a pair of horizontal side guards and an intermediate wire fabric, of a longitudinal rod suspended from the lower edge of each of said guards, and one or more transversely arranged rods connected at their respective ends with said longitudinal side rods, and at intermediate points between their ends with said wire fabric, whereby said side guards serve as trusses to Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,

2. In a device of the described class, the combination of a horizontal wire fabric, a horizontal end member connected with the respective ends of said fabric, a corner bracket rigidly clamped to the respective ends of said end members, a pair of longitudinal side guards connected at theirrespective ends with the corner brackets, a longitudinal rod suspended from the lower side of each of said side guards, a plurality of transverse rods connected at their respective ends with said longitudinal side rods, and at intermediate points between their ends with said horizontal wire fabric, whereby said guards serve as trusses to support the central portion of said fabric, while said corner brackets perform the two fold function of supporting said side guards and as shields for preventing contact with the rough severed ends of said horizontal end members.
