COLLARTFASTENER.
Specification ef Letters Patent.
Patented Dee. 1, 1914.
" Application inea novemueri, 191e. serial No. 729,174,
` To allwkom 'it may concern A Be it knownthat I, THoMAsOCoNNnLL, a citizen of the United States, res1dmg at lVatertown, in the county of Codington and Stat-e of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Col-` lar-Fasteners, of which the following is a` specification, reference being had to the accompany-ing drawings.
The present invention pertains to new and useful improvements in fasteners and relates more particularly to that class of fasteners used in conjunction with horse collars or the like.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a fastener of the aforesaid character which may be easily and readily applied to the sections of the collar,
which will automatically lock the sections of the collar together and positively hold them against displacement and also which may be readily and easily unlocked.
The invention has for another object a simple, durable and eflicient construction of a device of this character, the parts of which `may be cheaply manufactured, readily installed, and which will require praetically no attentionto maintain their proper locking connection. And the invention also aims to generally improve this class of device to render them more useful and commercially desirable.
With the above and other objects in view this invention consists in the novel arrangement, combination, formation and eonstruction of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated the simple and preferred form of `the invention it being, however, understood tional perspective View of one of the members.
Referring to the accompanying drawings wherein like and mirresponding` parts are designated by similar reference characters throughout the several views the numerals 1 and 2 iiulieate the respective sections or' the clamp each of which comprising a curved plate being bifurcated `at one end thereof to form a pair of parallel Shanks being adapted to be secured on the opposite sides of the longitudinal .iudcntations of the collar and providrul with apertures 4 in the extremities thereof through which suitable :fastening devices such as rivets may be inserted and also being provided with longitudinally extending slots `5 through which rivets or like fastening members may be in serted for securing the respective sections to the collar. Freni this construction it obvious that the plates may be adjusted upou the collar by first renuiving the rivetsl insorted thrrulgh the openings L1 and adjusting the plates longitlulinally upon the rivets inserted through the slots :5. Suitable fastoning means may then be again inserted through the openings -l for holding the plates in their adjusted position.
'lheplates or members 1 and 2 are adapted to be automatically connected or coupled together, and to that end, the member 1 has outstanding at a right-angle from a vertical edge thereof a vertical flange 6, about eentrally from the face of which flange extends straightaway a stud or tongue 7 having a notch 8 in its upper edge, while the plate or member 2 has outstanding therefrom parallel vertical flanges 9 and l0, one flange being at the vertical edge of said member opposite the corresponding edge of the member 9, said latter flanges receiving between them a slide or plate 12 adapted for engagement with said tongue or stud as presently explained.
The flanges 9 and 10 and sliding plate member 12 are provided about centrally with registering or coincident vertical slots 11 and a vertical slot 15, respectively, to receive the tongue or stud 7 with its engaging or free end suitably tapered for obvious reasons. The slidable member 12 is itself provided with additional vertical slots 14 near the upper and lower ends thereof, said slots receiving sutable rivets l?? er like means for guiding and retaining the slidable member in position, said rivets and slots providing Jfor a limited or predetermined vertical movement of said slidable member to enable the upper end wall of the central slot of' the slidable member engaging or being received within the notch 8 of the tongue 7, thus enabling said slidable member and tongue to be brought into locking engagement, as in automatically coupling or connecting together the members 1 and 2 and accordingly the lowerends of the hame sections.
Aresilient member or spring 16 is suitably arranged within one of the slots 14, or as for that matter both slots 14 may each have disposed therein a spring, the stress or pressure of which is such as to cause the required wall of the slot l5 to normally en gage the notch 8 of the tongue 7 to elf'ect such automatic engagement therebetween as above indicated.
In order to'y provide for unlocking the parts, the lower end of the slidable or locking member l2 may be, or rather is, suitably extended to depend a short distance below for the convenient application of the hand thereto with that end in view.
lNhat claim: a f
l. A device of the type described, including detachable or separable members having outstanding at right angles thereto vertical flanges, one flange arranged at a vertical edge of one member and two of said flanges arranged parallel and spaced apart, one of said parallel flanges being at the opposed vertical edge of the other member, and a resilientiy pressed slidable plate member mounted between said parallel flanges,
and guiding means projecting from said parallel flanges, received in said elongated slots. v A
2. A device of the type described, including detachable or separable members ha-lvin'g.
outstanding at right angles thereto vertical i'ianges, one lia'nge` at a vertical edge of one member and two of said flanges arranged parallel and spaced apart, one of said parallel flanges being at the opposed vertical edge of the other member, and a resiliently pressed slidable plate member mounted between said parallel fianges, the first mentioned vertical flange havingl extending from its face a notched. tongue, said par-y allel fianges and lslidable member having registering or coincident vertical slots central thereof to receive said notched tongue, said resiliently pressed slidable plate having elongated slots near its ends, and guiding means .projecting from said parallel flanges` received in said elongated slots, said slidable locking member having one end extending beyond said separable members when the deviceA is iny a coupled position for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence'of two witnesses.
