TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 29, 1914.
Application filed February 4, 1914. Serial No. 816,584.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN T. EATON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mobile, in the county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tables, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tables and more particularly to self-leveling tables.
The principal object of the device is to provide a device of this character which is so constructed that the table top will always be maintained in horizontal position irrespective of the plane of the floor or other support to which it is attached.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein all of the parts may be readily assembled and taken apart when necessary.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 83 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4- shows the perspective view of one of the roller supporting axles with the roller mounted thereon.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 represents the supporting legs of the table upon which is secured a platform 2. This platform is apertured, as shown at 3, in Fig. 3, and surrounding the aperture is the vertical flange 4: divided by a plurality of notches 5 and upon opposite sides of the notches having pairs of recesses or sockets 6. These sockets are adapted to receive the depending ends 7 of the roller axles 8 and upon each axle is mounted a roller 9, as shown.
The top of thetable is shown at 10 and has attached to its underside a plate 11 to ,which is secured an elongated rod 12 threaded upon its lower end to receive a locking nut 13. Slidably mounted upon the rod is a ball 14 which bears against the underside of the plate 11 and rests upon the rollers 9, as shown in Fig. 2. The rod 12 extends through the aperture 3 and carries upon its lower end a Weight 15 which, with the rod, produces a pendulum which has free universal movement so that, irrespective of the position of the support to which the legs are attached, the top will always be maintained in a horizontal position. By removing the nut 13 from the rod 12 the weight may be taken off of the rod and the rod lifted through the aperture 3 and ball 14.
What is claimed is:
A self leveling table comprising supporting legs, an apertured platform mounted upon the legs, a notched flange surrounding the aperture and having pairs of recesses arranged upon opposite sides of said notches, substantially U-shaped axles carrying rollers intermediate their ends, the ends of said axles being fitted within the recesses and rollers lying within the notches, a table top, a rod connected to said top and depending therefrom, a ball removably mounted upon the rod and engaged with the table top and resting upon said rollers, said rod passing through the aperture in the platform and a weight removably connected to the lower end of the rod.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN T. EATON.
