T0 all wlw/m, t may concern Be it known that I, WILHELM STIEWE, a citizen of the German Empire, and resident of Treptow, near Berlin, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Clamps for Tear-v Gfi Blocks, of `which the following is a specification.

rThe present inventio-n relates to a clamp for tear-off blocks comprising a cap having holding lugs for yslit leaves of paper, and its object is to prevent the so-called fringes being left attached to the stub, which 'fringes render it more difficult to tear off leaves the more the number of leaves is diminished.

To this end, the cap is provided along ,its

front edge with holding lugs or tongues at each end for open end slits in the leaves,

and also therebetween for inner slits in the leaves.

Figure l is an elevation of a leaf of a calendar, Fig. 2 is a plan of the sheet-metal strip, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the strip bent at an angle, Figs. 4 to 8 show various operations when bending the strip after placing the leaves or layers in a pile, and Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the finished block.

The individual leaves are provided with end slits and intermediate slits l, between which only so much paper is left that the leaf is securely held. The sheet-metal strip 2 (Fig. 2), from which the cap is made, possesses, correspondingto the slits l, holding lugs 3 for the end and intermediate slits l, and also points 4 and a continuous middel portion 5 to which the rear portion t3 having holes 7 for receiving the points -li is connected. The strip is first bent so that the angle having the sides 8, 9 and the projection lO (Fig. 3) is produced; the` individual leaves or layers are` then piled up on the side 9, so that they occupy-the position shown in Fig. t. The side 9 is then bent over about the line zZ-cl, so that the points 4c are directed upward. The side 8 is then bent over so far on. the head of the block that the points et take into the holes '7. The projecting edge or rim 6 which is of such a length that it covers the slits is then bent downward; the points 4 are treated in the same manner. The projection l0 is of the same length as the edge 6, so

that the slits are covered on both sides, without the leaves being pressed.

\ The provision of the open ended slits at the,` sides of the leaves, adapted to `be substaaitiallyv filled byl the "outer holding, tongues, which extend substantially to the edges of the leaves, is an important feature ofthe invention, because this construction eifectually prevents the formation of fringes attached to the stub at the sides of the leaves as the leaves are torn oli". Ina 4tearotf padV of this character, the fringes are more likely to be left at the corners, and as the leaves are 'torn off, reducing the thickness of the pad remaining, whilethe stub `remains the samey thickness, the liability of leaving fringes increases, unless provision 1s made to obvlate this difficulty, as 1n acscordance' with `the present invention.

It will be seen that the angular cap of sheet metal extends across the width of the pad and has a body portion provided with apertures, and a holding portion provided with holding tongues extending through the vslits inthe leaves and then bent upwardly,

while the body portion of the cap is bent over the top ofthe pad and then downwardly over the tongues, forming a rim 6 extending across the pad beyond the slits. The ends of the holding tongues extend through the apertures in the body portion of the cap and are bent to lock the parts together'.

The rib 10is formed by bending the holding and body portions of the cap together at their juncture, and this rib l0 extends across the pad beyond the slits in the leaves, upon the face of the pad opposite to the bent ends of the holding portions, so that in accordance with my construction the slits in the leaves are covered on both faces of the pad.

The function of the extension or rib 10 is to protect the slits at the back of the pad and prevent the leaves at the back from becoming loose and tearing along the row of slits. Furthermore, the `portion of the `pad across which the rib 10 extends could be made the front, and the leaves can be torn off along the riblOwith a clean cut, in the same manner that they are torn off along the rim 6;`

W'hat I claim is:

l. A block or pad, comprising in combination, a plurality of leaves having a row of slits at one end for the reception of the holding portions of a binding cap extend ing the Width of the pad, the end slits at the sides of thepleaves'having open ends, and an angular cap formed of sheet metal, having a body portion provided with apen tures, and a holding portion provided With holding tongues extending through the slits in the leaves, the outer tongues lying in the open slits substantially filling the length of said slits and extending substantially to the edges of the leaves, thus preventing the formation of fringes attached to the stub at the [sides of the leaves as the leaves are torn off, the free ends of the tongues being bent upwardly, and the body portion of the cap. being bent over the top of the pad and then downwardly over the tongues, forming a rim extending across the pad beyond the slits, Vsaid tongues extend- Ting through the apertures in the body portion ofthe cap and being bent to lock the parts together. p

2. A block or pad, comprising in coinbination a plurality'of. leaves having a row or' slits at one end for the reception of the holding portions of a binding cap extending the Width of the pad, the slits atv the sides of the leaves having open ends, and an angular cap formed of sheet nietal, having a body portion provided with apertures, and a holding portionv provided with holding tongues extending through the slits in the leaves and then bent upwardly, the body portion of the cap being bent over the top of the pad and then downwardly over the tongues, forming a rim extending across the pad beyond the slits, said tongues extending through the apertures in the body portion of the cap and being bent to lool: the parts together, the body and holding portions of the cap being bent one upon the other at their juncture to forni a rib extending beyond the row of slits in the leaves, on the face of the pad opposite to the bent ends of the holding tongues.
