Description

Sept. 23, 1930.-
A. P. WHITLOCK BOOK Filed March 13, 1929 Patented Sept. 23, 1930 1 UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE ANDREW P. WHITLOGK, OF LEBANON, TENNESSEE BOOK Application filed Marchv 13, 1929. Serial No. 346,661.
This invention relates to books, and particularly to auxiliary leaves for books, one
object of the invention being to provide a construction of auxiliary leaf sheet, and mode of applying the same to a book, whereby additional leaves are furnished before and aft-1 .vide an auxiliary leaf sheet having a cen tra-l binding portion and terminal fly leaf por tions which may, respectively, be secured between the back portions of the main leaves and back of the cover and to the front and rear cover members, so as to be firmly and securely retained in the book. V
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective View of the auxiliary leaf sheet, showing the same in partly outspread condition. I 1 i Fig. 2 is a view of the sheet, as it appear from the rear, and as inserted for application in the book.
3 is a top plan View of the folded sheet, showing the same 111 full lines, and 1n- (hcatlng 1n dotted llnes therelatlve positions of the main leaves and cover of the book, when,
of the book, and after the main leaves have" been assembled, the part 7 is disposed and fastened between thecover back and backs of the main leaves, whereby the auxiliary leaf is centrally secured in the book at the time the cover is applied. By this arrangement the 'user of the book. along the fold lines 15 and 18 the leaf secgroup ofauxiliary leaf sections 8, 9 and 10 will be disposed between the main leaves and the front cover section of the book, while the group of auxiliary leaf sections 11,12 and 13 will be disposed between the main leaves and the rear cover section of the book.' The relatively inner faces of the terminal leaf sections 10 and 11 are then pasted or otherwise secured to the inner surfaces of the cover leaves of the book so as to take the place of the usual fly leaves. The book will then present a front set of auxiliary leaf portions 8, 9 and 10, in which the fold line 15 between the portions 8 and 9 is forwardly directed, and a rear set of leaf portions 11, 12 and 13 in which the fold line 18 between the leaf portions 11 and 12 is forwardly directed. The leaf sections 8 and '9 may be separated from each other along the line 15 and-the leaf sections 11 and 12 along the line 18 during the operation of trimming and cutting the edges of the main leaves 1, 'or the auxiliary leaves mentioned may be left intact along the said fold lines so as to be later separated by the .VVhen division is made tions 8 and 11 willbe held united to the book, the back thereof, while the leaf sections 9 and 10 and 12 and 13 will be secured-by the leaf section lOto the front cover section of the book and by the leaf section lil to the rear cover section of the book, so that all the auxiliary leaf sections will be firmly held in V the bool In practice, the obverse and reverse faces tising section of a book, and constitute a buyers directory, or it may, if desired, be
} employed as an index section, or for any other purpose, the'construction described enabling an auxiliary advertising or other section to be made up and applied to a book, while the main leaf andcover portions of the latter are 1n process of assemblage, in a ready and convenientinianner; and it is to be understood that the auxiliary section may be employed as an auxiliary revenue producer or not, as desired by the publisher of the book. Of course the arrangement may be such that one 5 or more of the free leaves 8, 9, 11, 12 is embodied in the form of a detachable premium coupon or order slip, if desired,
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim 1. An auxiliary sheet or signature for attachment to books having front and rear cover leaves and a back comprising a central binder section for attachment to a book back, and opposite groups of leaf sections at the sides thereof and integral therewith, each comprising at least three leaves united by fold lines on which the sheet has been folded alternately in opposite directions, all the leaves of each set being adapted to be print ed upon both faces thereof except the rear faces of the outermost leaves, the latter being blank and adapted to be secured to the cover leaves.
2. An auxiliary sheet or signature for attachment to books having front and rear cover leaves and aback comprising a central binder section adapted to be bound in the back part of a book, end leaves adapted to be secured to the front and rear covers of the book, and intermediate leaves between each end leaf and the binder section forming with the end leaf a group of leaves united by fold lines on which the sheet has been alternately folded in opposite directions.
35 In testimony whereof I atlix my signature.
