To provide a means whereby the entire form of the traveler may be supported in a comfortable position in the seat of a railroad-car is the object of my invention, which consists in a removable support for the back, applied to the arm or corner of the seat, the shape of the removable support corresponding to the conformation of the body, and fitting it snugly from the lower part of the back to the shoulders and head of the occupant, and being readily removed and replaced to allow of the seat being reversed. 1
To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the mannerin which I have carried it out.
In the said drawing- A represents the seat of a IZtlllQitd-Cztl, the back a of which is pivoted to the side pieces or arms b in the ordinary manner, to admit of the seat being reversed to front in thewdirection in which the car moves.
B is a support of the form seen, fitting into the the arms or side'pieces-i), upon which the back of the seat turns. a
Secured to this metal piece E is a spring provided with a catch, 9, which bears. or hooks under the lower side of the side piece or arm I), to prevent the support B from-being accidentally raised out of place, the whole acting as-a spring-clasp, O, which may be readily liberated to allow of the support being raised and rcmovedwhen the back of the seat is to be thrown over to front in the opposite direction.
Each support B is provided with a projectingportion, which serves as a rest, h, for the arm of the oc-l cupant of the seat, the projecting rest it extending from the right or left side, of the support corresponding to the position it is to occupy, and when the seat is to be reversed the supports are taken from the arms or side pieces I) of the seat andreadily applied to the reversed seat, the position of theinner support being changed so as to fit on the outer arm or side piece bof the seat, and vice verse.
' The spring and its catch 0, if desired, may be dispeused with, and the support be held in position by its own weight; or the support may be attached to the arm or side piece I) by any other suitable device than that herein'shown and described without departing from the spirit of my invention.
