SARAH LIPTON, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
GARMENT. r
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 8, 1914:.
Application filed April 1, 1914;. Serial No. 828,724. I
To all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I, SARAH LIPTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garments, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a garment of the under-body or brassiere type, of such a construction as to provide for adjustment or arrangement as to desired tightness and snugness, so far as that is concerned, without resortto such conventional fastening means as buttons, hooks and eyes, and the like, and wherein an exterior smoothness thereof can be effected, regardless of variations in the adjustment of the corset or other garment covered thereby, and wherein the adjustment is effected not only with reference to girth about the body of the wearer, but also, andparticularly, with reference to the neck portion, to effect a snug and close contact with the chest of the wearer.
A further object in View is to provide a garment with the characteristics above indicated which is adapted for use by persons of considerably different sizes and forms, whereby economy is eifected in the number of different sizes of the garment which must ordinarily be kept in stock by a dealer, in
order to supply the trade, and meet the con-v tingencies as to variations of size and for which are encountered. V
Vith these and other obj ects in view, the invention consists in a certain construction and arrangement of parts: hereinafter explained, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a rear view of the garment; Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the inner side of the terminal or apex of the overlapping member; Fig. 3 is a similar view of the underlapping member, to show the point of separation of the strap at the front; Fig. 4; is a detail view showing the intersection of the straps.
The. garment embodying the invention may have any desired form or construction of front, with such ornamentation as may be flaps constitute the waistline of the rear of tlie'garm-ent, while the upper edges of said flaps lie on diagonallines extending from the shoulder portions of the garment respectively to the waist line, each upper edge extending from the shoulder portion at one side of the garment'to the waist line at the opposite side of the garment. This arrangement of the parts provides for applying adjusting strain or stress in opposite directions to the apices ofthe triangular flaps or go'res, and thereby simultaneously tending to reduce-the girth of the garment on horizontal lines and apply tension to the upperedge-of the front of the garment, to efiectzthe tightening of the latter, to insure a snug fit'or contact with the chest of the wearer.
In order that the fastening of those portions of the garment which are employed, as
above, to insure adjustment of the same,
may be effected without causing any projections or enlargements which would serve to detract from the smooth appearance of the dress waist or body arranged thereover, it is preferred to attach the draw tapes 12 and 13 to the bases of the flaps or gores, which tapes can be drawn around the waist of the wearer and tied or otherwise suitably secured. Also, in order that the diagonal tension of the under flap may be maintained for'the purposes explained, it is preferred to provide what may be termed shoulder straps 14 and 15 secured along the diagonal upper edges respectively of the flaps extending from the shoulder portions, the shoulder strap of the inner or under flap beingseparated from the edge of the flap, for example, at or about the point indicated by transverse dotted line 16 and brought outward and extended through a guide or loop 17 ofthe shoulder strap 15, so as to secure an interlocked running engagement therewith to permit of applying the-desired tension equally to the two elementsreferred to herein as the triangular rear flaps and prevent sagging at the upper edges. In order to tighten this exterior or loose strap 14, a supplemental draw tape 18 is preferably attached to its extremity and in adjusting, tightening and fastening the garment, the two tapes l2 and 18 may be drawn together with equal tension and brought around the waist to be tied, for example, with the tape 13.
Owing to the location and lines of strain of the drawing and fastening elements, consisting in the constructionillustrated of the tapes herein described, the efiect of drawing them about the waist of the wearer is to contact the garment bodily and thereby secure such a snug fit or" the garment over the garment upon which it issuperposed, as to accomplish the objects hereinbefore explained, regardless of the variations to the extent of several sizes, as that term is employed by dealers with reference to garments, and at the same time preserve the desirable snugness of the same at the neck portion.
lVhat is claimed as new is:
1. A garment adapted for dimensional adjustment having overlapping triangular flaps with their bases located at the side lines of the garment, and their apices located at the lower or waist line thereof, said flaps being provided with intersecting straps at their upper edges extending from the shoulder portions of the garment to the apices of the flaps, said straps having a running engagement with each other, and means for securing said apices of the flaps with their attached straps in the desired relative positions.
2. A garment adapted for dimensional ad justment having overlapping triangular flaps with their bases located at the side lines of the garment, and their apices located at the lower or waist line thereof, said flaps being provided with intersecting straps at their upper edges extending from the shoulder portions of the garment to the ,apices of the flaps, said straps having a running engagement with each other, one
of said straps being extended through a guide loop of the other, and draw tapes extended respectively from the apices of the flaps and from the extremity of the loose strap.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
