tween the adjacent ends of rails for forming a continuous and substantially uninterrupted rail tread while at the same time insuring a secure fastening between the rail ends without the use of fish plates and, one that is easily and-quickly operated:
A further object is to provide an inter fitting connection between the adjacent ends of railway rails whereby the connection therebetween is positively effected without the employment of fish plates or similar devices and the surface contour of the rail is uninterrupted in appearance.
A still further object is to so form the adjacent ends of ordinary rail structures as to receive a wedge and lug upon one rail end within a perforation and socket of the outer rail end and whereby the complete rail connection is formed by the rails themselves and requiring only the use of bolts and a cotter pin for completing the connection.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure l is a side elevation of the rail joint, the connected rails being broken away. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the rail ends, and Fig. 4 is a perspectix c view of the other and complemental rail end illustrated in an inverted position.
Referring more in detail to the drawings,

'Ilhe end of: the rail 10 has substantially the, lower half. of; the base flange cut away forming the bottom face 18 at the connecting endof the rail which is in a plane paral- Ilel to, that of the bottom face of the base flange and said face 18 is provided at its extreme end with a substantially cubical lug 19 having a perforation or opening 20 extending transversely therethrough. The face 18 is also provided with a projecting wedge 21 adjacent the inner end of said face.
The connecting end of the rail 11 has substantially the upper one-half of its base flange cut away forming a top face 22 having at its outer end a wedge-shaped recess or socket 23 and at its inner end a rectangular opening 24. This arrangement of rail ends forms completely complemental portions thereon and whereby the two rail ends are readily assembled in connected relations as illustrated in Fig. 2 by inserting the lug 19 within the opening 24 and the wedge 21 within the socket 23 and in which position the faces 18 and 22 will flatly contact each other and the base flange portions 17 being also in contact, the complemental inclined tread and web portions will also interengage while the extreme end 25 of the cut away web of the rail 11 will engage the face 26 of the cut away base of the rail 10.
lVith the rails so assembled, the same are adapted to be locked in their engagement by means of a cotter pin 25' passing through the opening 20 of the lug 19 and also by means of bolts 27 secured through the web perforations 28 of the rail ends and having the locked nuts 29 mounted thereon.
It will thus be seen that an advantageous structure in rail joints is provided and one in which the rail. ends themselves are formed to interfit and are readily assembled by positioning one rail end upon the other in their complemental engagement, the only additional required elements being the cotter pin and the bolts.
While the forms of the invention herein shown and described are what are believed to be preferable embodiments thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made in the form, proportion and details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
WVhat I claim as new is l. A rail joint comprising complemental rail ends having a laterally cut away tread and web portion at the end of each rail, one of said rails having substantially the lower half of its base flange cut away and the other rail end havin substantiallythe upper half of its base ange cut away and the remaining portion of said base flange being provided with a wedge-shaped socket and an opening therethrough, a wedge and a perforated lug formed upon the lower face of the first named cut away base flange and adapted for interengagement wij-h said socket and opening, the adjacent ends of the tread and web portions being inclined.
2. A rail joint comprising complemental rail ends having a laterally cut away tread and web portion at the end of each rail, one of said rails having substantially the lower half of its base flange cut away and the other rail end having substantially the upper half of its base flange cut away, one of said web portions having an upper engaging face and the other having a lower engaging face, said upper face provided with a wedgeshaped socket in its outer end and an opening at its inner end, said lower face provided with a wedge and also with a perforated end lug, the said lug and wedge adapted for reception within said socket and opening respectively and the end faces of said rails being complementally formed and adapted to contact with each other.
