To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, CHARLES N. THURS TON and SARAH EMERY DUDLEY, citizens of the United States, residing at London, in the Kingdom of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Covers of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates broadly to book covers and more particularly to identification devices for the book in the nature of a book plate, which in the present instance consists in a construction that permits the insertion of a card.

The principal object of this invention is to provide a holder for a card upon the inner side of a book cover in such manner as to securely hold the card in position in an artistic manner.

A further object of this invention is to construct a card receptacle within the inner side of a book cover of such a nature as to securely retain a card in position and form an artistic frame for the edges of the card.

Other and further objects of this invention will in part be obvious and will in part be pointed out in the specification hereinafter following in which reference will be made to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters are used to represent like parts throughout the several figures thereof.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a book cover showing one cover open to display the device. Fig.2is a detail sectional view taken substantially on line A-A looking in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view taken substantially on line B-B looking in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 4 is a sectional detail view showing the insertion of a card within the receptacle.

It is a common or general practice for the owner of a book to write his or her name upon the inner side of the cover. This practice is not desirable in connection with especially fine volumes that are particularly elegantly bound. The writing tends to mar the artistic beauty of the binding. A solution of this problem was solved to a certain extent by book plates that were extensively used in fine volumes in the past and which at present are still used in connection with many private libraries.

The present invention provides a book cover constructed in such manner that a card may be secured within the holder 7 whereby the book presents a pleasing and artistic appearance.

Referring to the drawings and more particularly to Fig.1 of the drawings, a book 1 is bound between the boards 2. The front board is shown in this figure as being partly open disclosing the inner side of the board and showing the heavy line beading a upon the inner facing 5.

Referring now particularly to Figs. Qand 3, a millboard 6 is covered with the usual outer covering of cloth or leather 7 and is provided with an indentation which may be either cut or depressed on the inner side of the mill board. The depression is arranged with two depths, namely, 8 and 9. The first depression 8 is substantially the thickness of heavy card board and forms a recess for seating an edging frame 10,which has its inner edges beveled to present a sight opening of a pleasing finished appearance. The inner facing 5 is also provided with a sight opening 11 which is arranged to form a framing or edging around the edging frame. The edging frame extends over a portion of the deeper depression 9 and thus forms an annular pocket of a size sufiicient to receive an ordinary bristol board card 14.

Referring now particularly to Figs. 3 and 4, it will be noted that a slot 12 leading into the deeper depression through and under the edging frame 10, is out directly through the line of heavy beading t. This arrangement substantially conceals the slot 12. It is also to be noted that the slot extends into the deeper depression at a slight distance from the edge of the depression opening so that if an attempt is made to remove the card 14: by pushing it through the slot it will pass beyond the slot and abut against the edge of the deeper depression 9. If it is desirable that the card should be permanently secured within the card pocket, it is only necessary that a small amount of paste be inserted in the slot 12.

By referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, it is to be noted that the card when in position is substantially framed and that the general appearance of the inner cover has a pleasing artistic finish due to the construction of the card receptacle.

Having thus described our inventionwhat we desire to claim is 1. A book cover having in combination, a cover board provided with an elongated depression on the inner side thereof, an edging frame over said depression and provided With a sight opening of a'size' less than said depression whereby the edges" of; said edging frame extend over a portion of I; said opening forming an annular pocket an inner facing over said edging fram said inner faeing being provided With an. opening larger than the opening in said edging frame to expose the inner edge port-ion'of said edging frame, and heavy line beading upon said inner facing ith a slit opening through said beadingleading through and under said edging frame to permit the introduction of a card beneath said edging frame to expose the face of saidcard' through the opening in the edging frame.
