Description

SPECIFICATION Bandage or garment for use on the limb of an animal This invention relates to a sleeve forming bandage or garment for use on a limb of an animal, such as a horse.
When an animal injures a limb it is often necessary to apply a dressing to the injured part and to then apply a bandage to hold the dressing in place. The use of a conventional strip bandage is undesirable due to the length of time which it takes to apply the bandage and to remove the bandage to inspect the wound. Also conventional bandages tend to slip along the limb and then no longer hold the dressing in place. A stretchable tunnel-like bandage which has to be moved along the limb to the position of use cannot readily be used for the limbs of large animals such as horses, as difficulty is experienced in pas sing it over the hoof which can easily result in soiling the bandage.
According to the present invention there is pro vided a sleeve forming bandage or garment for use on a limb of an animal, comprising a suitably shaped covering formed of a stretchable textile material provided along two longitudinal side edges with a releasable fastening means for holding the two side edges together when the covering is placed around a said limb, at least one end region of the covering being provided on the side which in use faces said limb with means to assist in holding the covering in place when in use.
Preferably the fastening means comprises a zip fastener but alternatively it can comprise strips of material of the kind sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Velcro".
The covering may be provided on its side which in use faces a said limb with a lining which may be fixed or detachable. Preferably the lining is formed of a stretchable textile material.
Some embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of examples, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic perspective view of a first embodiment of a garment according to the pre sent invention, Figure 2 is a view from one side of a second embodiment of a garment according to the present invention suitable for fitting to the hock portion of a limb of a horse, Figure 3 is a view from the other side of the gar ment shown in Figure 2, Figure 4 is a view on the inner side of the garment shown in Figures 2 and 3 in the open condition, Figure 5 is an end view taken in the direction of arrow 5 indicated on Figure 4 in the open condition, Figure 6 is a view from one side of a third embod iment of a garment according to the present inven tion suitable for fitting to the knee portion of a limb of a horse, Figure 7 is a view from the other side of the gar ment shown in Figure 6, Figure 8 is a view on the inner side of the garment shown in Figure 6 and 7 in the open condition, Figure 9 is a view from one side of a fourth embodiment of a garment according to the present invention suitable for fitting to the fetlock portion of a limb of a horse, Figure 10 is a view from the other side of the garment shown in Figure 9, and Figure 11 is a view on the inner side of the garment shown in Figures 9 and 10 in the open condition.
The bandage or garment shown in Figure 1 of the drawings is shaped to cover the hock region of the leg of a horse but it may be shaped to cover a knee or any other region of the leg.
The bandage or garment comprises a covering 10 which is formed in two pieces 11 and 12 secured together along a longitudinal side edge by stitching 13. The covering 10 is preferably formed of a woven stretchable textile material and two longitudinal side edges 14 and 15 are provided with the interengagable parts of a zip-fastener 16. Alternatively the side edges 14 and 15 can be provided with fastener material of the type sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Velcro". The upper end of the covering 10 is provided on its inner side with a band 17 formed of a stretchable gripping material to assist in holding the covering 10 in place on the limb of an animal. The gripping material preferably comprises an elasticated cotton material. A similar band 17 can be provided at the lower end of the covering 10 or at both ends of the covering 10 if desired.
The inner side of the covering 10 is provided with a stretchable lining 18 formed of a knitted orwoven stretchable material such as elasticated cotton material. In the embodiment of Figure 1 the lining 18 is fixed to the covering 10 by stitches but it may be fixed to the covering 10 in a detachable manner so that a soiled lining 18 can be removed and replaced by a clean lining. The lining 18 can be dispensed with and the covering 10 used without a lining.
In use of the bandage or garment the covering 10 is placed around the limb of the animal with the fastener 16 in the unfastened state. The covering 10 is stretched around the limb and the fastener 16 is then done-up. The inner facing side of the band 17 grips the limb to assist in holding the covering 10 in place.
The material forming the covering 10 is preferably tightly woven and is water repellant although the material will allow air to pass through it whereas the lining 18, when provided, is of an open knitweave.
The bandage or garment is easy to apply and easy to remove and a veterinary surgeon may have available a supply of such bandages or garments of different shapes and sizes.
The bandage or garment of the present invention can be used for holding a dressing in place over a wound or it can be used as a therapeutic device for preventing or reducing swelling.
Figures 2to 5 show a garment 19 which is suitably shaped to fit over the hock portion of a limb of a horse. It comprises a panel 20 and a panel 21 which are secured together by stitching 22 along mutual side edges 23 which are suitably shaped. Attached to the outer side edges of the panels 20, 21 are the engageable parts of a zip fastener 24. Provided on the inner side of the panels 20,21 at the upper end portion thereof are panels 25 and 26 respectively which are each provided with a circular pocket 27 in which is housed a circular pad 28 formed of resilient material such as a foamed polyurethane. Secured to the panel 20 is a longitudinally extending flap 29.
Provided on the outerside of the panel 20 at the upper end thereof is a flap 30 provided with a strip of fastener material such as "Velcro" which can engage with a strip 31 of similar material provided on the outerside of panel 21. The bottom end of the flap 29 is provided with a strip 32 of fastener material which can engage with a strip 33 of similar material pro videdatthebottom of panel 21 atthe innerside thereof. The panels 20,21,25,26, pockets 27 and flap 30 are formed of a woven stretchable material.
In use of the garment 19 it is placed around the hock portion of the limb of a horse with the fasteners 24,30,32 in the unfastened state. The garment 19 is then stretched around the limb and the fasteners 30, 31, and 32,33 are located and fastened. The fastener 24 is then done-up and the fastener 30 is undone to enable the closure of the fastener 24 to be completed. The fastener 30 is then fastened again to ensure that the slider of fastener 24 is secured inside the flap. The two pads 28 fit into hollows which are in the limb and serve to hold the garment 19 in position on the limb. The garment may enclose a dressing provided on the limb of the horse.
Figures 6 to 8 show a garment 34 which is suitably shaped to fit over the knee portion of a limb of a horse. The garment 34 comprises a panel 35 and a panel 36 secured together by stitching 37 along mutual side edges which are suitably shaped.
Attached to the side edges of the panels 35,36 are the engageable parts of a zip fastener 38. The upper edges of the panels 35,36 are folded inwardly and secured by stitching 39a and then folded upwardly and secured by stitching 39b to form a panel 39 of treble thickness. Provided on the inner side of the panel 35 is a longitudinally extending flap 40. In approximately the centre of the panel 35 there is provided a substantially circular or eliptical hole 41 which is covered by a similarly shaped panel 42 secured to the panel 35 by stitching 43. The panel 42 is formed from a woven stretchable material which has greater stretchability that the stretchable material from which the panel 35 is formed. Along part ofthe seam which joins the panels 35 and 36 there is provided a slit36a.This isto prevent pressure being applied to the carpal bone at the back of the knee which can lame a horse. Provided on the outerside of the panel 35 at the upper end thereof is a flap 44 provided with a strip of fastener material such as "Velcro" can engage with a strip 45 of similar material provided on the outer side ofthe panel 36. The flap 40 is provided at its bottom end with a strip 46 of fastener material which can engage a strip 47 of similar material provided on the inner side of panel 36 at its bottom end.
In use of the garment 34 it is placed around the knee portion of the limb of a horse with the fasteners 38,44,45,46,47 in the unfastened state. The gar ment 34 is then stretched and fasteners 44,45 and 46, 47 are fastened. The fastener 38 is then done-up and the flap 44 is unfastened to enable the closure of the fastener 38 to be completed. The flap 44 is then refastened ensuring that the slider of fastener 38 is secured beneath the flap. The panel 42 covers the knee joint and the stretchability of the panel 42 enables itto stretch as the knee is bent without disturbing the position of the garment 34 on the limb.
The addition of panel 39 stiffens the upper end of the garment 34to hold it in place on the limb Figures s to 11 show a garment 48 which is suitably shaped to fit over the fetlock portion of a limb of a horse. The garment 48 comprises a panel 49 and a panel 50 which are secured together by stitching 51 along mutual side edges 52 which are suitably shaped. Attached to the outer side edges ofthe panels 49,50 are the engageable parts of a zip fastener 53. Provided on the inner side of panel 49 is a longitudinal flap 54. The upper ends of the panels 49,50 are folded inwardly and secured by stitching 55 to have regions 56 of double thickness. Secured to the inner side of the panels 49,50 at the bottom end thereof is a strip 57 of elastic material.Provided on the upper end of the flap 54 is a strip 58 of fastener material such as "Velcro" which can engage a strip 59 of similar material provided on the inner side of panel 50 at the upper end thereof. Provided on the outerside of the panel 49 at the bottom end thereof is a flap 60 provided with a strip of fastener material which can engage a strip 61 of similar material provided on the outer side of panel 50 at the bottom end thereof.
In use of the garment 48 it is placed around the fetlock portion of the limb of a horse with the fasteners 53,58,59,60,61 in the unfastened state. The garment 48 is then stretched and the fasteners 58,59 and 60, 61 are fastened. The fastener 53 is then done-up. The flap 60 is then unfastened to enable the closure of fastener 53 to be completed. The flap 60 is then refastened ensuring that the slider of fastener 53 is secured beneath the flap. The strip 57 prevents the garment 48 moving up the limb and the double thickness regions 56 also assist in keeping the garment 48 in place on the limb.
The garments described when fitted to an injured limb can be used to apply even pressure to injured skin to reduce the oedema, exudation and proliferative granulation tissue commonly associated with traumatic injury to an equine lower limb, to reduce post operative: swelling after elective surgery, and to provide. sustained application of dressings and poultices. Itwill be appreciated that such garments will be manufactured in a range of sizes.
The garments can be easily applied to a limb without becoming soiled whilst being applied and after use can be washed for re-use. They can be autoclaved if necessary.
