HUBERT M. GREIST, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE GREIST MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
SEWING-MACHINE BRAIDING ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 23, 1914.
Application filed August 22, 1913. Serial No. 786,155.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, HUBERT M. Gnmsr, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented or dis covered certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Braiding Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to sewing machine braiders or corders by means of which a braid or cord may be guided to the needle of the machine in such position as to be stitched to the work, the invention relating more particularly to underbraiders adapted to guide the braid or cord to the needle of a sewing machine beneath the fabric to which it is to be stitched. For the efficient operation of this class of braiders it is essential that the braid guiding tube or trough, which affords a braid guiding passage, should be extended forward to the center of the needle, and to this end the present improved braider is provided with an inverted trough through which the braid passes, and which trough is notched at its forward end for the clownward passage of the needle, so that it will securely and accurately direct the braid up close to the needle.
In guiding some kinds of braids, such, for example, as soutache braid, to the needle of a sewing machine, more or less difficulty has been experienced by reason of the turning or twisting of the braid on its way to the braidguiding passage. To obviate this ditliculty the present improved braider is provided with a spring finger arranged in front .of the entrance to the braid-guiding passage, and which presses yieldingly upon the braid so as to smooth it out and prevent it from turning or twisting.
The present improved underbraider is adapted to be secured in working position in such a manner that it may be readily removed when desired, and also in such a manner that it will be held in place by the' shuttle-slide or sliding cover for the shuttle race. To this end the bed or body portion of the improved braider is provided with a pin or projection adapted to enter a hole in the bed of the sewing machine, and, at'a distance from said pin or projection, with a downturned steadying lug adapted to engage a recess in the work plate at the edge :turned lug or hook of the throat-plate of the machine. It is also provided with a downturned lug or projection affording a recess or pocket on the under side of said bed or body portion adapted to receive the front edge of the shuttle slide when the latter is moved for- "ward to close the shuttle race, so that as the shuttle slide is closed it will correctly position the underbraider with reference to the needle of the machine.
. In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved underbraider in operative relation to the sewing machine shuttle slide and throat-plate. Fig. 2 is a front view and Fig. 3 is a side view of the underbraider.
Referring to the drawings, 12 denotes a plate constituting the body or bed portion of the braider, said body or bed portion being provided within its outer edges with a downwardly extending pin 13 adapted to enter a hole in the bed-plate of a sewing machine, and also preferably with a downturned steadying lug 14 arranged at a dis tance from said pin and adapted to enter a recess at the edge of the throat-plate of the machine. The bed or body portion 12 is provided at its front edge with a down- 15 adapted to be engaged by the front end of the shuttle-slide, or cover for the shuttle race, 21, when the latter is slid forward to close the shuttle race; and in thus moving the shuttle slide to closed position the braider will be accurately located in its working position. EX- tending forward of the lug or hook 15 is a projection 20 which is adapted to rest on the upper side of the work-plate of the sewing machine to hold the plate or body 12 flat against said work-plate and thus keep the said plate or body 12 from tilting.
Attached to the upper side of the bed or body portion 12 is an inverted trough 16 which affords a braid-guiding passage, said inverted trough being preferably slightly downwardly inclined at its forward end, as shown in Fig. 3, and being provided at its end, which extends forward over the throatplate 22 to the needle hole, with a notch 17 adapted to receive the needle 18, or to afford a passage for the needle, so that the braid may be held and guided until it reaches the needle.
Attached to the upper side of the bed or plate 12 is a spring finger 19 which is disposed transversely in front of the entrance to the braid-guiding passage afforded by the trough 16, this spring finger serving to press upon and smooth out the passing braid and prevent the same from turning or twisting, said spring finger yielding to accommodate different thicknesses of braid.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the invention arovides an underbraider which may be quic ly and readily attached to or removed from the sewing machine without tightening or loosening a set screw, or without requiring the device to be pried up or out of working position, the device being readily rendered removable merely by retracting the shuttle slide; while the construction of the braider is such that the braid will be accurately guided close up to the needle of the machine.
The invention is not to be understood as being limited to the exact details herein shown, as, for example, the downwardly extending shuttle-slide engaging-lug or proj ection might be differently located to adapt the attachment to different kinds or makes of sewing machines; or the steadying lug 14: might be omitted and the attachment held in working position by the downwardly extending pin or projection 13 and the downturned projection or hook 15 engaged by the shuttle slide.
Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A sewing machine underbraider comprising a plate or body portion having with in its outer edges a downwardly extending pin or projection, to engage a hole in the bed-plate of a sewing machine, and also provided with a downturned projection adapted to be engaged by the forward end of the shuttle slide to secure the attachment in place, and an inverted trough attached to the upper side of said plate or body portion and afi'ording a braid-guiding passage.
2. A sewing machine underbraider comprising a plate or body portion having a downwardly extending pin or projection to 5 in its outer thereof and affording engage a hole in the bed-plate of a sewing machine, and a downturned steadying lug at a distance from said pin or projection, and also provided with a downturned hook or projection adapted to be engaged by the forward end of the shuttle slide to secure the attachment in place, and an inverted trough attached to the upper side of said plate or body portion and affording a braidguiding passage.
3. A sewing machine underbraider comprising a plate or body portion having withedges a downwardly extending pin or projection, to engage a hole in the bed-plate of a sewing machine, and also provided with a downturned projection adapted to be engaged by the forward end of a shuttle slide to secure the attachment in place, and a partaffording a braid-guiding passage.
4:. A sewing machine underbraider comprising a plate or body portion having a downwardly extending pin or projection, to engage a hole in the bed-plate of a sewing machine, and a downturned steadying lug at a distance from said pin or projection, and also provided with a downturned hook or projection adapted to be engaged by the forward end of a shuttle slide to secure the attachment in place, and a part affording a braid-guiding passage. 7
sewing machine braider comprising a plate or body portionprovided with an inverted trough attached to the upper side sage, and a spring finger attached to the upper side of said plate or body portion adacent to the entering end of said trough, and arranged to yieldingly press on that portion of the passing braid which is about to enter said braid-guiding passage.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
