This invention relates to trimming; mechanism for sewing machines, and particularly to a trimming mechanism which can be applied to any sewing machine.
An object of my invention is to provide a trimming mechanism which will be posi tive in its action and trim the work with ease.
Another object of my invention is to prvidea trimmingmechanism which can be readily applied to any sewing machine, without altering any of the parts of the latter; which may be removed from the machine with facility; and thrown out or action when not required.
Other objects of the invention will appear r during the course of this'description.
The invention consists in the parts, ele ments and combinations hereinafter described and claimed.

The face of the bracket 13, is provided with a holding and adjusting plate 16, provided with an elongated slot ll, through which passes a screw 19, to hold the same rigidly but adjustablv to the face of the bracketlii. A spring washer 30, is held between the head of the screw 25, and the lever 24, in order that the latter may have sufficient friction applied thereto to prevent the same from being accidentally thrown out of place and also for holding said latch in any position to which it may be moved. The upper inclined portion of the bracket 19, is split at 31, to provide a clamp for the purpose of holding an adjustable bushing 32, in proper position. The said bushing is clamped by means of the screw 33, tapped into the bracket at the split portion. The bushing 32, is provided with a knurled head for' manipulating the same.
Passing through the bushing 32, is a shaft 34, having'the head 35, at one end adjacent the head of the bushing 32. The other end of'the shaft is supported by bushing 34*, held in one of the extensions 38, of bracket 19 and said shaft is bored longitudinally for the reception of oil or other lubricant. The said shaft is also providedwith trans- .verse apertures 36, through which the oil may pass to the journal supports or bearings; and the ends of the shaft are suitably plugged as shown art -37, to prevent the es cape'of the lubricant. The shaft oscillates in the bracket 19,. and has fixed thereto, between the extensions 38, of said bracket, the sleeve 39, of the trinnner-lever 40, which is in the form of a bell-crank, thehoritontal arm of which has secured th'ereto the trimmer-blade, by -means-of the set screw 42, passing through said arm and into or Y through the blade. Sleeve 39, has apertures through which oil may be introduced to shaft 34. Said blade is provided With the shank 43, the elongated stem 44, and the overhanging portion 45. The vertical arm of the bell-crank lever-40, is connectedat its lower end to the piston-socket.52, by means of the clamp c0llars'53. Substantially midway between its ends, the socket 52, has a collar 54, clamped thereon, and pivoted to the top of said collar-is a lever 55, having its forward end provided with a hook 55, and its rear end provided with a manipulating'h'andle 5 6. Adjacent the handle the lever is provided with a notch or groove into which extends a lug 57, which may be formed on the.
pin 29, for locking the trimmer-blade out of action. Rigidly secured to the collar 54, in proper position, is a coiled spring 59, the forward end of which engages the back of the lever 55.
The shaft 2, of the machine is provided hook 55, of the lever 55. Thus a firm but detachable connection is 'made between the driving shaft of-the machine and the trim mer mechanism, causing the eccentric oh the driving shaft to actuate the trimmer lever 40, and move its blade vertically relatively to the stationary ledger-blade 41, thus securing the proper cooperation of the-trimmer blades for the purpose oftrimming the work. It will be obvious that the cutting edge 46, of the trimmer-blade is sufficiently elevated above the work lying upon the cloth-plate, to enable the latter to be passed under the same for the purpose of trimming the edges thereof. lVhen the trimmer-blade is in action the piston-socket is held rigidly against the enlargement 63, of the piston by the spring-latch 55, the hook 55, of which engages the pin 64. When the trimmer blade is to be thrown into action, the
handle 56, is pressed to release the same from the lug 5", and cause the hook 55 to assume a positlon to engage the pin 64. This may be done while the machine is in operation and without affecting the action thereof: and then the handle 56, is pressed quijckly forward and released, when the spring will. cause the hook 55, to engage the pin 64 and lock the piston and socket together. This action throws the trimmerblade above the cloth-plate and the eccentric 60, becomes operative to actuate the trim ming mechanism. The trimmer-blade is thrown out of action, while the machine is in operation, with equal facility, it being only necessary to slightly press the handle 5'6,thus releasing the pin 64, from book -55",and. then draw the same back to engage the sanie with the lug allowing the piston to reciprocate in the socket 52, with-= out effect. 'lVhen the trimmer blade is depressed, its upper edge is substantially flirsh' with the edge of blade 41. See Fig. 8. To render the connection; between the sleeve (,9,

From the above description it will be seen that l have provided a simple trimming mechanism, which may be attached to any sewing machine, and actuated from the driving shaft of the latterby the mere application of an. eccentric and strap, and which may be considered, from one aspect, as a trimming attachment applicable to any sewing machine having an eccentric and strap on .an actuating shaft It will further be seen that my trimmer mechanism eliminates all the parts which usually appear above the the cloth-plate of the machine, and leaves the latter entirely free for the support and manipulation of the work. It will also be seen that the parts of the trimmer mechanism are few, simple and strong, and that the bearings are few and easily lubricated. Further, that fine and nice adjustments can be made quickly and conveniently, and by simply manipulating a couple of the elemcntsof the mechanism; and that the trimmer-blade can be thrown into and out of action quickly and easily. 7
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by LettersPatent is: I v
1. In combination with the bed-plate of a sewing machine, a bracket, one portion of wh1ch engages the bottom and the other tory blade carried by said second bracket;-
and means for actuating said vibratory blade.

In combination with the bed-plateof a sewing machine, a bracket one portion of which engages the bottom and the other portion-of which engages the edge of said bed-plate; means by which the bracket may be detachably secured to said bed-plate: a second bracket, and complemental means between the two brackets for coupling one detachably to the other; a trimming mechanism comprising a stationary and u vibra- MEL tory blade carrie by Said second bracket; and means for actuating said vibratory blade including a detachable connection therefrom to the drivingmember of the actuating means.

A. trimming mechanism comprising a bracket one portion of which has means adapting it to be secured to a supportingframe, and another portion of which has supporting means; a second bracket having means cooperating with the support-mg means of the first named bracket for coupling the two brackets dctachably together; trimming mechanism carried by the second bracket; and means for adjusting the two brackets relatively to each other. 7

In combination with the cloth-plate of a sewing machine, a trimming mechanism having a fixed blade and a movable blade, means for securing the trimming mechanism to the machine with the cutting edge of the movable blade below thesuriace of the cloth-plate, means for projecting the movable, blade through the cloth-plate into operative position and maintaining itthus during its operation, and means whereby a actuating the movable blade.
6. In combination with a machine-frame. a trimming mechanism; means for detachably securing the trimming mechanism to the edge of the bed plate at the front of the machine; means for actuating the trimming mechanism including a drivingshait, and a detachable, positive driving connection between said shaft and the trimming mach anism; 'and means by which the latter may be thrown in and out of operation during the running of the machine without ailecting the operation of said shaft. whereby the trimming mechanism may be stopped and removed from the machine.
7. In combination, a sewing nmrhine: a trimming mechanism, carried by said ma chine, having a ledger-blade, said trinnning mechanism also including a vibratory trimmer-blade .capable of being moved through the machine cloth-plate to an operative position above the surface oi the same; means connecting with the drivingshaft of the machine for actuating said trinnner-blade'; and means whereby the trimmer-blade may be thrown into and out of action through the cloth-plate during the operation of the machine.

a trimming mechanism comprising a ledgerblade and a trimmer-blade, a common support for the two blades, means for detachably connecting the support to the bracket, means for driving the trimmerblade including a connection in separable parts located below the cloth-plate of the machine, and means whereby said parts may be separated during the running of the machine to put the trimmer-blade out of operation.
10. In combination with a sewing machine, a bracket fixed thereto below the cloth-plate; a trimming mechanism, comprising a ledger-blade and a trimmer-blade, supported on said bracket with all-the functional parts except the cutting edge of the ledger-blade normally below the surface of the cloth-plate, said trimmer-blade having a pivoted carrier which moves said blade through the cloth-plate into operative position, and means for actuating the carrier including a detachable connection to the latter.
11. In combination, a sewing machine, a trimming mechanism, all the movable parts of which are carried by the machine below the cloth-plate thereof, including among its elements a device for supporting the trimming-blade thereof in position to perform its trimmingfunction; actuating mechanism for said trimming mechanism including a driving-shaft and telescoping parts detachably connected together and also located below the said cloth-plate; and means for operatively coupling said parts so that they I will -have no relative movement and so that means for supporting a ledger-blade; means all the movements of said trimming mechanism will be positive.
12. A trimming mechanism compr sing for supporting a trimmer-blade; means for actuating the trimmer-blade, including a driving-shaft and detachable telescoping parts one of which'is carried by said shaft;
and a spring latch for positively holding the two parts together.
13. A trimming mechanism having in combination a bracket; two cofiperating blades; means for supporting said blades on said bracket and means for adpisting said blades relatively to each other, said means being carried by said bracket and including a shaft, and a bushing'surrounding the shaft and screw-threaded into said bracket.
14. In combination, a sewingmachine; a
fabric trimming mechanism, all the movable parts of which are supported by said machine below the cloth-plate thereof and comprisingastationary blade and a vibratory trimmer-blade; and meanswhereby the trimmer-blade of said mechanism may be moved throughsaid cloth-plate to operative position above the same at will during the *operation of the machine.
15. In combination with a sewing ma-.
chine, a trimming mechanism supported thereby below the cloth-plate and'comprising a stationary blade and a vibratory trim mer-blade, means for actuating the trimming mechanism whereby its trimmer-blade only is moved through the cloth-plate, and means whereby the 'trimming'mechanism may be thrown out of operation and its trimmer-blade depressed with its cutting edge below the surface of the cloth-plate during the operation of the machine and without affecting the stitching of the latter.
16. In combination with a sewing machine, a trimming mechanism comprising a stationary blade and a reciprocating blade,

17. A trimming mechanism'comprising a ledger-blade and a trimmer-blade arranged.
in parallelism and normally below the cloth-plate, common means for supporting the blades in coiiperative relation, and means for adjusting the trimmer-blade positively toward and from the ledger-blade and posi tively maintaining the adjustment.
18. A trimming mechanism comprising a ledger-blade and. a cooperating trimmerblade, the latter having a notched portion to receive the work and an overhanging cutting edge, and mechanism for actuating the trimmer-blade including means for throwing the latter out of operation and for depressing the cutting edge thereof below the edge of the ledger-blade.

In combination with a sewing machine; a trimming mechanism attached thereto below the cloth-plate comprising a ledger-blade and a trimmer-blade; means for actuating the trimming mechanism whereby its trimmer-blade only is projected above the cloth=plate; and means whereby the trimmer blade maybe thrown out of operation during the operation of the machine and its upper edge located substantially flush with the upper edge of the ledger-blade.

In combination with a machine, a trimming mechanism having a fixed blade and a movable blade; means for supporting the movable blade normally at rest below the workplate of the machine; actuating mechanism for the movable blade; and means whereby said blade may be projected through the work-plate into operative position and simultaneously set in operation.
2L A trimming mechanism including, in combination, trimmer-blades, an eccentric on the driving-shaft of the machine, a strap engagingeccentric, a telescopic connection between said eccentric and one of said '20 blades, means for holding the telescopic parts operatively "together, and means whereby the parts of the telescopic connec-' tion may be detached during the operation of the trimming mechanism.

In combination with a sewing machine, a trimming mechanism comprising a ledger-blade, a reciprocating trimmerblade, and means for actuating said trimmerb lade, all the functional parts except the cutting edge of the ledger-blade being located below the surface ofthe cloth-plate of the blade may be thrown into-and out of action during the operation of the machine and without affecting the usual functions of said machine.
23. A trimming mechanism comprising a trimmer-frame, a ledger-blade and a trimmer-blade carriedby said frame, a holding bracket, and means between thesaid frame and bracket whereby the trimmer-frame may be accurately seated on the holding bracket and securely held in place on the latter,

A sewing machine including, in combination, a'work support; a trimming mechanism comprising a ledger blade, and a cutting blade projecting above said work support and cooperating with said ledger blade; means for'operating the cutting blade; and means for raising the cutting blade above the work support and lowering said blade beneath the same during the operation of the machine, whereby its cutting action is rendered efi'ective or ineffective.
