To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PAULSCIARRETT, citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Edward, in the county of lVashington and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suction Clothes-Washers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved suction clothes washer and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character having certain improved structural features whereby the labor incident to the washing of clothes is greatly minimized while at the same time theclothes are quickly and thoroughly cleansed.
More specifically stated, the invention includes a hollow conically shaped head provided with ports at diametrically opposite points, an internal centrally located cup and water conducting means between said ports and the cup, and a cylindrical member adapted to be removably fitted in said cup and also provided with ports and having a perforated horizontal wall and an outwardly inclined flange for engagement with the clothes.
The invention has for a further object to provide a perforated annular member secured at one edge to the inner face of the head adjacent its larger end, said member being disposed in parallel relation to the axis of the head whereby water is ejected with considerable force through the openings in said member and upon the clothes.
The invention has for a, further general object to increase the efficiency and service ability of devices of the above character in actual use, while at the same time the manufacturing cost thereof is not increased to any material extent.
With the above and other objects in view as will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, combinations and arrange ments of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a clothes washer constructed in accordance with the preferred embodiment of my invention; Fig.

Referring in detail to the drawings, 5 designates the conical head or body of my improved clothes washer which is preferably coustructed of tin or other sheet metal and is provided in its apex with an opening to receive the cylindrical tube 6 which is designed for the reception of one end of a suitable handle, (not shown). The tube 6, it will be observed, extends into the hollow conical head for substantially onc-half of its length and upon the end thereof, the cylindrical chamber or cup member 7 is suitably secured. The wall of the head 5 is provided at diametrically opposite points with ports or openings indicated at 8, and the annular wall of the cylindrical cup 7 is also provided with openings S) in line with said ports. The cup or chamber 7 is open at its lower end and is suitably reinforced as shown at 10. A member 11. of cylindrical form is provided in its body wall at diametrically opposite points with openings 12. These openings are adapted to register with the openings 9 in the wall of the chamber 7. Radially disposed pipes 13 are fixed at their outer and inner ends to the head 5 and cham her 7 respectively and conduct water to said chamber through the openings 12 of the member 11. This member is provided on one end with an outwardly inclined or flaring annular wall 13 and at the juncture of said wall with the annular body wall of said member, a slightly curved horizontally disposed wall 1a is secured. This latter wall is provided with a plurality of openings 15 throughwhich water is adapted to be ejected upon the clothes as will be later explained. Upon the outer surface of the conical head 5 of the washer, the elongated tapering water directing lips 16 are secured. These lips are of substantially semi-circular form in cross section and one of the same is arranged over each of the ports 8. At their lower wider ends, the metal lips 16 are reinforced as at 17. The lower edge of the flaring or inclined wall 13' of the member 11 is similarly reinforced as at 18.
An annular metal strip 19 is arranged within the lower open end of the head 5, and is soldered or otherwise secured at one of its edges to the wall of said head. This annular metal strip is disposed in parallel relation to the axis of the conical head and extends from Patented J line 9, 1914..
the wall of said head in spaced relation thereto. The lower edge of this strip is provided with a reinforcing bead 20, and a plurality of openings 21 are formed in the strip intermediate of its longitudinal edges. The lower edge of the head 5 is also reinforced by the head 22.
Having above described the construction of the device, its operation will be understood as follows: The clothes or other articles having been placed in the boiler containing soap and water, the washing device is alternately raised and lowered therein. In the downward movement of the device upon the clothes, the same enter the lower open end of the head 5 and extend within the annular inclined wall 13 of the suction member 11. ater also enters beneath the lips 16 through the ports 8 and tube 18 to the interior of the cup. As the washing device is moved downwardly through the water, jets of waterare forcibly discharged through the openings 21 upon the clothes, and the dirt thereby loosened so that it will readily be dislodged from the fabric by the action of the water. In the upward movement of the washing device, the articles disposed within the head are lifted slightly until their weight causes the same to drop from the enlarged lower end of the cup 11. The suction thus created draws the water through the tubes 13 and the same is discharged through openings 15 in the wall 14: of the cup member upon the clothes. In this manner, it will be seen that there is a forcible discharge of a large number of water jets upon the clothes, both in the downward and upward movements of the head 5. It will therefore be appreciated that the articles may be very quickly and thoroughly washed or cleansed.
As my improved washing device is entirely constructed of sheet metal, but little manual labor need be exercised in its manipulation. The device is highly reliable and eflicient in practical use, and provides means whereby the clothes may be thor- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for able, modification therein and I therefore reserve the privilege of resorting to all such legitimate modifications as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
A washing device of the character described comprising a hollow conical head, a tube secured in the apex of the head and extending into the same, said tube being proor vided upon its inner end with a cylindrical chamber, the body wall of said chamber being provided with openings at diametrically opposite points, the wall of said head having ports formed therein at corresponding points, tubes connecting said openings and ports to conduct water into said chamber, semico-nical suction cups secured upon the inner wall of said head between said tubes, and a suction cup removably engaged in said chamber and having openings in its body wall to register with the openings in the chamber wall, said cup being provided with a downwardly extending outwardly flaring annular flange, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
