By reason of the fact that the lever 42 with the selector 2 for actuating the motors 62 and 63, are operated at all times through one of the levers 40 controlled by any one of thekeys 3, the platen 13 will be rotated one space for each type, but should four t pe be presented, the motors 62 and 63 wi l be actuated to impart to the platen 13 a movement equal tofive spaces which constitute the four spaces for each type and the extra` space between the type for the next space to be printed.
In order to provide a means for indicating at a glance the position of the plateni'elatively to the type line being printed, a gear 200 is in mesh at all times with the gear 201 which actuates the dial 202 disposed at the forward upper edge of the machine and in ready view of the operator.
The control device for the respective motors 62 and 63 is clearly shown in Figs. 8 through 13, and includes the two stationary plates 301 and 302 which have mounted for oscillation therebetween, the controlling rof tatory disk 303, the tubes beiii'gvled from the vacuum chamber 5 to the'ports of the disk 301 and tothe motors 62 and 63 through the respective tubes 62 and 62 and 63 and 63 to the disk 302, the rotatory disk 303 bein provided with the recessed portion, as clear y shown in Fig. 12, so as to canse the interlinking or intere-onnnunication between the respective tubes 62 o1' 62 or 63 or 63 to impart the necessary action to the movable bellows of the motors 62 and 63, respec" tively, and conse uently canse thedesired .actuation of the s aft 64.'.
In order to operate the platen carriage to impart to it the necessary upward vertical movement, due to the line spacing and also to impart to itthe descending vertical movement during the change from a written page to` a new page, the shaft 69 must be swung so as to disengage the gear 73 from the gear 74 andthe gear 68 from the gear 67, this being affected through the motor 83, controlled throu h the selectorr2, said motor 83 being operab connected to the bell crank lever 84 whic is connected to the sliding block 85 mounted upon the two spaced pinsl 86 of the support 72. This block 85 has the shaft 69 journaled therethrough and when moved b the motor 83, causes the position ing of t e ar 87 into mesh with the gear 88, so that t e shaft A69 is rotated to actuatc the gear 89, and ds the bevel ar 89 is placed in mesh with the bevel gear O, the shaft 91 journaled inlthe bearings 92 and carrying the gear or pinion 93 is rotated. 1. A typewriter, including a frame, a 'vcrtically reciprocatory carriage, a horizontally rotatable platen mounted therein, a motor actuated lmeansv for elevating the carriage, a plurality of selective motor actuated. means for rotating the platen one or more spaces at a time, and -motor actuated means for returning the carriage.
2. A typewriter, including a frame, a vertically reciprocatory arriage, a horizontally rotatable platen mounted therein,a 'plul' rality of selective motor actuated means forw rotating the platen one or more spaces at a time, a motor actuated means for elevating the, carriage, a motor: actuated means for returning the carriage, and selective means for causing the individual actuation of any ot' the motors.
3.
