Be it known that 1, JOHN WVALnHEIma citizen of the United States, residing in Elizabeth, in the county of Umon and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting- Machines, of which the followingisa specification.
This invention relates mainly to typewriting machines in which usually two type-sets are used, the types of each set being of different styles or of different languages. The present improvements may be as forexample" in connection with the machine disclosed in my co-pending application, Serial No. 196,797, filed October 16, 1917.
In said application are shown two rate type-sets; a single set of keys,
sepawhich may be connected to actuate either type-set;.
a platen which may be moved into effective relation with either type-set; and a scale and pointer. -When the operative desires to change from one type-set to another, he must first observe the position of the platencarriage, other type-set, and there position it by means of the scale and pointer, according to the observation previously taken.
An object of the present invention is to expedite the use of the machine and to elimiunto the possibility of inaccurately positioning the parts when changing from one typeset to another.
In carrying out my invention, I have mounted two type-sets upon a truck, which may be moved relatively to the platen, to render either one of the type-sets effective.
.Each type-set preferably comprises typebars and a set of sub-levers, the latter being movable with said type-sets to bring them into efi'ective relation with the single set of keys.
The type-bars are preferably mounted upon separate segments, secured to said truck, which is normally held in position by a locking pawl, which may be actuated by a finger-piece, when it is desired to change from onetype-set to another.
I have provided stops for accurately positioning either type-set. These stops being preferably secured to the type-carrying truck, and engaging with a locking pawl on the machine frame, only a single carriage escapement is required, since the carriage and then move the platen to the remains undisturbed while changing from one type-set to another. 7
I have thus provided two units, one comprising a plurality of type-sets, and the other comprising the keys, platen and carrlage escapement. One unit, preferably the one comprising the type-sets, is movable relatively to the other to render either type-,
set effective with said platen and bring it under the control of said keys.
I preferably actuate the carriage-escapement mechanism by the type-bars of each type-set. To do this, I have provided each type-set with a universal bar, with which the type-bars cooperate. These universal bars are brought into effective relation with said escapemen one at a time, when the corresponding type-set is rendered effective.
I have found it preferable to mount ribbon-spools on the type-carrying truck, there being one on each side of said truck, between which extends a ribbon, threaded through the ribbon-vibrators; (there being one of the latter provided for each type-set), and over a central guide-rod.
To feed the ribbon from one spool to another, I have provided means comprising a cross-bar, which may be actuated from the dog-rocker while typing to feed the ribbon from one spool to the other through the intermediary of pawls. Said cross-bar may be moved relatively to said dog-rocker, and still remain connected thereto while changing from one type-set to another.
Each ribbon-vibrator is provided with an actuating lever which may be rendered effective when the corresponding type-set is rendered effective.

This figure also shows the ribbon-vibrators which may be connected with said interponent to be actuated thereby.
In carrying out my invention, I have mounted two type-sets 1.0 and 10 in front of a platen 11, either one of which may be moved into effective relation therewith. Said type-setscomprise type-bars 12, which may be swung to print against the platen through the intermediary of bell-cranks 13,
actuable by sub-levers 14. The free ends of the sub-levers 14, of which there are two sets, one associated with each type-set, pro- .ject forwardly under hook-like portions 15 on keys or key-levers 16, so that they may be actuated by said key-levers and moved relatively thereto when changing from 'one type-set to another. to render either type-set effective with the platen, and to move the free ends of the sub-levers 14 into effective relation with the engaging portions 15 of the key-levers 16. This may be done by means of a finger-piece 22, forming part of the type bar-rests 23, secured to the type-carrying truck 19.
The bell-cranks 13 and the sub-levers 14, associated with the type-bars 12 of both type-sets, are pivotally supported on slotted cross-bars 24 and 25, respectively, secured to the type-carrying truck, so that they may be actuated thereon. I
Each sub-lever 14 has associated therewith a return-spring 26, to restore the con nected type-bar 12 to its normal position, upon the return of the key-lever 16; the latter being restored to its normal positionby The key-levers 16 are pivoted on a com{ mon fulcrum-rod 28, supported on aslotted cross-bar 29, secured to the machine frame 21. The key-levers extend forwardly-betravel of the type-carrying truck 19'and.
the sub-levers 14 carried thereby,when"the free ends of the latter are moved into engaging relation with the hook-shaped portions15 on said key-levers 16.
To maintain the effective relation between the key-levers 16 and the sub-levers 14, or, in other words, to guard against disengagement between said levers, during an actuation thereof, slotted guide- plates 30 and 31 are provided for the key-levers 16 and the sub-levers 14, respectively, which avoid any possible sidewise motion of said levers relative to each other while being actuated. The guide-plate 30 for the keylevers 16 is preferably secured to the machine frarne 21, while the guide-plate 31, which guides the forward ends of the sublevers 14, is secured to the type-carrying truck 19 by means of suitable brackets 32 extending forwardly therefrom.
To facilitate the movements of the typecarrying truck 19, anti-friction balls 33 are provided, which pla in raceways 34 formed by grooves in the xed rail 20 on the machine frame, and grooves in a rail 35 sean overhang which has a tendency to turn the rail 35 within the rail 20 and cause un necessar binding. To guard against such action, have provided a guide-rail 36, extending underneath the type-carrying truck 19, with which one or more rollers 37 may engage, said rollers being rotatably supported on the slotted cross-bar 25 of said truck.
The type-carrying truck 19 is normally locked, to prevent accidental displacement, by means of a pawl 38 which normally engages in one of two slots 39 and 40, Fig. 3, according to which type-set is effective; said slots being formed in the cross-bar 25 of the truck 19. When it is desired to change from one type-set to another, as for example from type-set 10 to type-set 10, the pawl 38' is moved out of the slot'39 b means of a han dle or finger-piece 41, ig. 2, pivotally mounted at the left-hand side and at the front of the machine frame 21. The handle is swung about its pivot 42 to draw on a link 43 connected with an arm 44, projecting downwardly from a rock-shaft 45, upon which the pawl. is mounted. Said fingerpiece 41 is moved until it strikes a fixed stop 46, atwhich time the pawl has been moved out of the slot 39. The type-carrying truck is ,then moved rightwardly a trifle until the slot 39 isout of alinement with the pawl 38, at which time the operative may let go of the finger-piece controlling the pawl, when a return-spring 47 becomes eifective to hold the pawl 38 against a back48 formed between hand type-set is brought into effective relation with the platen, and is accurately positioned by means of the stop, andflocked in said position by means of the pawl 38, without any special attention of the operative.
. To facilitate the entrance of the pawl 38 geared to into the slots 39 and 40, the pawl or the slots may be provided with beveled edges.
The platen 11 is mounted on a platen frame 51, supported for case-shifting movements, hereinafter' described, on a carriage 52, which is arranged to travel for letterfeeding movements, during typing operations, on a front rail 53 and a rear rail 54 secured to the machine frame 21. a
The letter-feeding movements of said car riage are controlled by an escapement comprising an escapement wheel 55, which is the typewriter carriage 52 by means of a pinion 56 and a rack 57 meshing therewith said rack being pivotally supported at 58 on said carriage 52. A suitable spring-drum 59 constantly urges the carriage 52 leftwardly, and thus tends to rotate the escapement wheel 55, which is provided with teeth 60, engaging with a loose dog 61 and a fixed dog 62 on a dogrocker 63 which is caused to vibrate back and forth each time a type-bar 12 is caused to rint.
0 do this, each type-bar is provided with a heel 64, which, as the type-bar approaches the printing point, engages with a universal bar 65 to move the latter rearwardly to transmit said movement byi means of a cross-bar 66 thereon, Figs. 2 and 6, to a floating interponent 67, provided with a crossbar 68 which engages with the dogrocker 63 to move the latter against the tension of a return-spring 69; thus freeing the loose dog, so that it may be moved by a spring 70, Fig. 6, to bring it into effective relation with the next tooth 60 of the escapement wheel 55. At the same time the fixed dog moves into holding relation with the tooth 60' just disengaged by the loose dog 61. When the type-bar leaves the platen to return to its normal position, the universal bar and the interponent are restored to their normal positions by suitable springs 71 and 72, respectively, Figs. 2 and6. Thus, the dog-rocker is permitted to return to normal position under the influence of its spring 69 to move the fixed dog 62 out of engagement with the escapement wheel 55 and bring the loose dog 61 into engagement with the next tooth on the escapement wheel whereupon the latter moves until the loose dog 61 is arrested by a fixed stop 72 on the dog-rocker 63, thereby effecting a letterspace movement of the carriage 52.
It should be understood that only a single escapement is used, and that said escapement 1s actuable through the intermediary of the floating interponent 67, which-may be actuated by the universal bars 65 associated with the type- sets 10 and 10, each universal bar being supported in back of the segment which supports the associated set of'typebars of the corresponding type set; Each universal bar is brought into effective relation with said interponent when the corresponding type-set is rendered effective.
Each universal bar 65 is mounted for parallel movement by suitable guiding means,
said guiding means comprising a rock-shaft 73, Fig. 6, pivotally supported on ears 74 secured to the cross-bar 18. Said rock-shaft 73, when moved, swings two downwardlyprojecting arms 75, secured thereto, to move the universal bar 65, pivotally connected to their ends, by means of ears 76, extending upwardly from the cross-bar 66 of said universal bar. The lower part of the universal bar 65 is also moved rearwardly through the intermediary of an arm 77 projecting rearwardly from the rock-shaft 7 3, which swings a bell-crank 78, connected thereto and pivotally mounted on a bracket 79 secured to the type-bar segment 17. A downwardly-projecting arm 80 of said bell-crank moves the lower part of the universal bar, to which it is pivotally connected by means of an ear 81, secured to the lower part of said universal bar 65.
The interponent 67,. through the intermediary of which the dog-rocker 63 is vi- 84, and is arranged to move parallel with the arms 85 extending upwardly from the rock-shaft 83.
A space-bar 88 may be used to actuate the escapement mechanism. Said space-bar may comprise two rearwardly-extending arms, in the form of levers 89, pivoted to swing on the fulcrum-rod 28. Said levers project .pwardly beyond the fulcrum 28, and are bent toward each other, to the center of the machine, where they are joined to form an upwardly-projecting.arm 90, which engages with a downwardly-prqe'ctlng arm 91 on the rock-shaft 83 of the swing frame 82, to rock the latter and actuate the dogrocker 63, through the intermediary. of the interponent 67, thus vibrating the loose and fixed dogs thereon, between the teeth' of the escapement wheel 55, to effect a letter-space movement of the carriage in a manner hereinbe'fore described. It will be understood, with this arrangement, that the escapement may be actuated, by the space-bar,w1thout idl actuating the universal bar 65.
he platen 11 may be shifted from lowercase. to upper-case position to facilitate typing with lower-case and upper- case types 92 and 93, respectively, by suitable shift key-levers 94,"of which there maybe one arranged at each side of the machine. Each shift-key-lever 94 may be pivotall supported on the fulcrum-rod 28, and, w en depressed, causes an upwardly-projecting arm 95 thereof to swing forwardly, and rock a shift-frame 96 through the intermediary of an arm 97 projecting downwardly from a rock-shaft 98, forming part of said shiftframe 96. Said shift-frame 96 also comprises forwardly-projecting arms '99, supporting at their 100, which moves bodily upward when said shift-frame 96 is actuated, thus moving the platen frame 51, with the platen 11, to upper-case position through the intermediary ofa roller 101 secured to a cross-bar 102 on said platen frame, said roller 101 being adapted to roll on said shift-rail 100 during letter-space movements of said platen. Said platen frame 51 is guided in its shifting movement by links 103 projecting forwardly from a rock-shaft 104 on the car- 'riage 52. Said rock-shaft 104 may be provided with .-a counterbalance spring (not shown), as in the Underwood typewriting machine, to facilitate the shifting movements of the platen 11. Return-springs, similar to the return-springs 27 for the keylevers 16, may be provided for the caseshift-key-levers 94. p I
A ribbon 105 is provided, through which the types print,'Figs. 1 and 2. Said ribbon passes from one to another of two ribhon-spools 106 and is guided over-rollers 107 arranged near said spools. Said ribbon 105 is also threaded through ribbon-vibrators I 108, of which there is one for each type-set each vibrator 108 being arranged in back of a type-bar guide 109 for the type-bars 12 of each type-set. A central roller 110 is provided to guide said ribbon 105, so that the sections of ribbon disposed between said central roller 110 and the rollers 107, located at the ribbon-spools, may be vibrated, one independently of the other, when its associated type-set is effective; It will be seen forward ends a shift-rail fulcrum-rod which is that the guide-rollers 107 are mounted on ribbon-spool casings 111, Fig. 4, which con tain the ribbon-spools 106, the casings being secured to brackets 112 on the type-carrying truck 19; also that the central roller 110 is mounted on a central support 113 for the type-rests 23. Thus, it will be understood that the ribbon 105 is carried by the truck and is movable therewith when changing from one type-set to another to render the sections of ribbon associated with the type--' sets effective. 7
Each ribbon-vibrator may be actuated, when its associated type-set is effective, to expose the portion of ribbon threaded therethrough to the types 92 and 93 of the printing type-bars of said type-set. This may be done by a ribbon-vibrator lever L14, which, when the universal bar .65 of the associated type-set is actuated, swings about its pivot 115 through the. intermediary of an upwardly-projecting arm 116 on the floating interponent 67, which actuates the dogrocker of the escapement mechanism. The connection between the lever 114 and the interponent 67 comprises a pin 117 projecting laterally from the lever 114, which engages in a .slot 118 in the upwardly-projecting arm 116 of said interponent. Thus, when the interponent 67 is moved rearwardly duringthe typing operations, the forward end of the ribbon-vibrator lever 114 is moved upwardly to bring the ribbon 105 into the path of the printing types 92 and 93.
The ribbon-vibrator levers 114 may be connected, one at a time, with the interponent 67 when the associated'type-set is rendered effective. To do this, they are slidingly supported on their pivot 115 in the form of a secured by cars 119 to the shift-rail 100, so that the levers 114 may. be moved sidewise of the machine to connect either one with the interponent 67. To assist in moving the ribbon-vibrator levers 114 with their associated type -sets, when changing from one type-set to another, there is provided for each lever 114 a bracket .120, embracing the latter, and which is secured to the associated type-bar se ment 17 (Figs. 1 and 6).
0 illustrate more clearly the changing from one type-set to the other and the connecting and the disconnecting of the ribbonvibrator levers 114 with the interponent or actuator 67 during such operation, let it be 120 assumed that the type-set 10 is to be rendered effective. The operative first unlocks the type-carrying truck 19, by means of the handle 41, as hereinbefore described. He then moves the type-carrying truck 19 to- 125 ward the right-hand side of the machine by means of the finger-piece 22. During the early part of this movement, the pin 117 on the ribbon-vibrator lever 114, associated with the type-set 10, leaves the slot 118 in 130 the arm 116 of said interponent, Fig. 6. During the latter part of the movement of said truck 19, as the type-set 10 approaches its effective position, the pin 117 on the ribbon-vibrator lever, associated with said type-set, enters the slot 118 in the arm 116, after which the stop 49 on the truck engages with the pawl 38, to position said type-set 10*, and the pawl 38'then drops into the slot 40, thus locking the type-carrying truck 19 in its changed position.
To facilitate the entrance of the pins 117 into the slot 118 of the arm 116 of the'interponent 67, said pins may be slightly pointed at their free ends.
During case-shifting movements of the platen 11, the ribbon-vibrator 108 of the effective type-set moves therewith, so as to maintain the same normal relation between the platen and the section of ribbon at the type-guide 109. To do this, the fulcrumrod 115 for the ribbon-vibrator levers 114 is moved with the shift-rail, through the intermediary of the ears 119, during case-shifting operations, thus carrying with it said levers 114, and consequently the effective ribbon-vibrator 108. To guide the ribbonvibrator lever substantially parallel to itself during this movement, so that the forward end thereof raises or lowers the ribbon-vibrator 108, the slot 118 in the upwardly-projecting arm 116 of the interponent 67 is vertically disposed and elongated, so as to allow the pin 117 on the ribbon-vibrator lever 114 to move up'and down therein, thus guiding the connected lever.
It will be understood that only one rib- .bon-vibrator 108 is connected with the in- ,terponent 67 at a time, and that the disconnected ribbon-vibrator 108 would have a tendency to drop relatively to the type-bar segment. To avoid this, each ribbon-vibra tor 108 is provided with ears 121, bent forwardly therefrom, and which normally rest on the base of the type-guides 109, and also engage with the sides of said type-guides, so as to be guided thereby, during vibrations thereof.
It will further be seen that only the connected ribbon-vibrator 108 will be raised with the platen 11 during case-shifting movements of the same, the other ribbonvibrator remaining in its lowermost position; but, as the fulcrum 115 moves up during case-shifting of the platen, the rear part of the ribbon-vibrator lever 114, associated with the last-mentioned ribbon-vibrator, swings, thus moving the pin 117 thereon out of register with the slot 118. If the operative should change from one type-set to another, while the platen is in the upper-case position, I have provided means to guide the pin into the slot 118. This may include cams 123 at either side of the arm on the in'terponent to guide the pin 117 properly guide-brackets 120, when the platen is being shifted to upper-case position, I have provided each guide-bracket with upwardlyprojecting ears 124. These ears are of such a length that they will retain therebetween their associated ribbon-vibrator levers 114 when they are in their upper-case positions.
The ribbon 105, may be fed from one to the other of the spools 106, during the typmg, by means of the downwardly-extending arm 91, comprising part of the swinging frame 82 which is actuated through the intermediary of the floating interponent 67 by either one of the universal bars 65, as hereinbefore described. The free end of said arm has a slot 125, through which extends a rod 126 between two arms 127, projecting rearwardly from a rock-shaft 128, so that the latter may be actuated by the arm 91, thereby vibrating a pawl 129 engaging with a ratchet-wheel 130 on a main ribbon-feed shaft 131 carried by truck 19, thus causing rotary movements of the latter; said pawl 129. being mounted on an arm 132 projecting forwardly from, and secured to,
said rock-shaft 128. A holding pawl 133 en-;
gages with said ratchet-wheel 130 to prevent backward rotation thereof. It will be understood that the ribbon-feeding pawl 129 is vibrated back and forth, at each printing operation, through the intermediary of the type-bars 12 which engage with the universal bars 65. The rotary movements of the main ribbon-feed shaft 131 are transferred through beveled gears 134 thereon to drive the vertical countershafts 135, upon which the ribbon-spools 106 are mounted, through the intermediary of beveled gears 136 arranged at the lower ends of said vertical countershafts.
It should be understood that there are two sets of the gears 134, 136, and that only one set is in mesh at a time; and that the main ribbon-feeding shaft is slidable lengthwise in the type-carrying truck to connect either one of the gears 134 thereon, with its associated gear 136 on the vertical countershaft or ribbon-spool shaft 135.
From the foregoing, it will be understood that either type-set, when in effective relation with said keys, may be effective to actuate the ribbon-feeding mechanism, and that the rod or cross-bar 126 is carried by the type-carrying truck 19, and is movable relatively to the downwardly-projecting arm 91, at which time the cross-bar 126 slides relatively to said downwardl -projecting arm 91 through the slot 125 in the latter. i
In illustrating my invention, 1 have shown it as applied to the Underwood typewriting machine, some of the standard parts of said machine being changed for the purpose of applying my invention.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the im rovements may be used without others.

1. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, of a truck movable longitudinallythereof, a plurality of sets of type-bars, pivotally mounted on said truck, so that the type-bars of each set may be swung upwardl and rearwardly to cooperate with the platen, a single set of keys all arranged in a series of rows all extending across the machine, the rows being arranged one behind another, and means .whereby upon movement of the truck, to bring one of .2 5
and means whereby the keys will be effective to actuate the type-bars of any set, positioned opposite said set of keys by movement ofsaid truck.
3. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen, of a set of 7 keys arranged in parallel rows at the front of the machine, a truck movable from side to side of the machine, a plurality of sets of type-bars, the type-bars of each set being so pivoted on said truck that the typebars of anyset, when brought into position opposite said set of keys, may be swung upwardly and rear'wardly to cooperate with the platen, and means whereby said set of keys will be rendered effective on the typebars of the set positioned opposite, thereto.
4. The combination with a platen, of a plurality of type-sets arranged adjacent each other, a single set. of keys arranged in 1 parallel rows, a truck supporting said types'ets, means for guiding said truck, so that any one of said type-sets may be brought.

5. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, of a truck, a plurality of sets of type-bars, mounted on said true for movement into and out of position to cooperate with said platen, the type-bars of each set being pivoted on said truck, so that they may be swung upwardly and rearwardly to cooperate with the platen at the printing point when theset to which they belong is positioned tocoiiperate with the platen, a single set of ke s at the front of the machine, levers for said keys, pivoted at the rear of the machine, said levers having upwardly extending hook-like members alined across the machine, and sets of sublevers pivoted on said truck, and operatively connected with the corresponding type-bars, the sub-levers of any selected set of type-bars being brought into position with their free ends underlying the hooklike members of the key-levers when the selected set of type-bars is brought into opertive relation with said platen by means of said truck. 6. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, of a truck, a plurality of sets of type-bars, mounted on said truck for movement into and out of position to cooperate with said platen, the type-bars of each set being pivoted on said truck, so that they may be swung upwardly and rearwardl to cooperate with the platen at the printing point when the set to which they belong is positioned to cooperate with the platen, a single set of keys at the frontof the machine, levers for said keys, pivoted at the rear of the machine, said levers having upwardly-extending hooklike members alined across the machine,

The combination with a platen, of a plurality of type-sets, each set comprising type-bars pivotally supported on a type-bar segment, a truck on which said segments are arranged, side by side, a set of sub-levers for each type-set, said sub-levers beingip votally supported on said truck, an operative connection between each sub-lever and the corresponding type-bar, a single set of keylevers, having hook-like engaglng portions thereon, and guiding means for said truck, enabling the truck to beipositioned to bring the free ends of said sub-levers, one set at a a time, under said hook-like engaging portions of said key-levers, to render effective with the platen the type-set with which said sub-levers, moved as above stated, are associated. 7 7

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a set of keys at-the front of the machine, of a set of key-levers for sald keys extending toward the rear of the machine, a platen, a platen carriage, a plural ty of sets of type-bars movable into efiectlve position with respect to said key-levers, means to effect operative connections between said key-levers and the type-barsof any set moved into effective position w th respect thereto, and key-actuated feeding means for said platen carriage rendered effective upon movement of one of said sets of type-bars to effective position. i

The combination with a platen, of a plurality of type-sets, each type-set comprising pivoted type-bars, a truck on :which said type-sets are arranged, side by side, a set of operating members for each type-set, said operating members being supported on said truck, an operative connection between each of said type-bars and the corresponding operating member, a single set of keylevers, having hook-like engaging portlons thereon, and guiding means for said truck, permitting movement of the same to bring the free ends 43f said operating members, one set at a time, under said hook-like engaging portions of said key-levers, to render effective with the platen the type-set with which said sub-levers are associated.

The combination with a platen, of a plurality of type-sets, each set comprising pivoted type-bars, a truck on which said type-sets are arranged, side iby side, a set of operating members for each type-set, said operating members being supported on said truck, an operative connection between each of said type-bars and the corresponding operating member, a single set of keys arranged in the lower front part of the machine, a set of levers on which said keys are mounted, extending beneath said truck and pivoted at their rear ends, said levers having hook-like en aging-portions, and truckguiding means below said platen, permitting said truck, to be moved to bring the free ends of said operating members, one set at a time, under the hook-like engaging portions of said levers, to render effective with the platen the type-set with which said operating members are associated.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, of a set of vertically movable keys, a plurality of sets of typebars, a truck for said setsiiof type-bars whereby any one of" said sets may be brought into efiective position opposite said set of keys, said sets of type-bars being arranged side by side, and the type-bars of each set being pivotally mounted on said truck, so that when positioned opposite said set of keys they may be swung upwardly and rearwardly to cooperate with the platen at the printing point, and means whereby, upon movement of a selected set of type-bars to a position opposite said set of keys, an operative connection will be effected between each key and the corresponding type-bar of the selected set.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, of a truck movable longitudinally thereof, two sets of type-bars arranged side;by side on said truck, the type-bars of each set being pivoted to be swung upwardly and rearwardly to 006perate with the platen, a single set of keys arranged in parallel rows, means whereby either set of type-bars when positioned opposite said set of keys will be operatively connected therewith, and means including two fixed stops for limiting the movement of the truck in opposite directions, and for positioning said sets of type-bars opposite said set of keys.
14. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, two type-sets, each set comprising a set of type-bars pivotally supported on a type-bar segment, to be swung upwardly and rearwardly to cooperate with said platen, the segments being arranged adjacent to each other, each type-set conr ,prising also a set of sub-levers, the free ends of which are alined across the machine, a single set of key-levers, each key-lever having an engaging portion thereon, the engaging portions of said key-levers being alined across the machine, and means for causing a relative movement between said keylevers and said sublevers to bring the free ends of the sub-levers of either set into cooperative relation with said engaging portions on said key-levers, thereby rendering effective the type-set with which said sublevers are associated.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, of a truck movable longitudinally thereof, two sets of typebars arranged side by side on said truck, the type-bars of each set being pivoted to be swung upwardly and rearwardly to cooperate with the platen, a single set of keys arranged in parallel rows, means whereby either set of type-bars when positioned 0 posite said-set. of keys will be operative y connected therewith, means including two fixed stops for limiting the movement of the truck in opposite directions, and for positioning said sets of type-bars opposite said set of keys, and locking means for maintaining either of said sets of type-bars in position to be actuated by said keys.
16. The combination with'a platen, of two type-sets, each set comprising type-bars pivotally supported on a type-bar segment, said segments being arranged side by side and secured to a truck, a set of sub-levers for each type-set, said sub-levers being pivotally supported on said truck, a set of bell cranks connecting said type-bars with said sub-levers, a single set of key levers, said key levers having hook-like. engaging portions thereon, guide rolls for said truck, and means for moving said truck to bring the free ends of said sub-levers, one set at a time, under said hook-like engaging portions of said key levers, to render effective, with the platen, the type-set with which said sub-levers, moved as above stated, are associated.
17. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a unit comprising a set of keylevers, a platen, and an escapement mechanism including a dog-rocker and an interponent for actuating the same, of a unit comprising two type-sets disposed side by side and a ribbon-vibrator for each type-set, said last-mentioned unit being movable with respect to the first to bring either of said type-sets into operative relation with said key-levers, and levers for actuating said ribbon-vibrators, connected with said second unit so as to move therewith to bring into operative engagement with said interponent the lever for the ribbon-vibrator of the type-set moved to effective position.
18. In a typewriting machine, the combination with aunit comprising a set of keylevers, a platen, and an escapement mechanism including a dog-rocker and an interponent for actuating the same, of a unit comprising two type-sets disposed side by side and a ribbon-vibrator for each type-set,
said last-mentioned unit being movable with respect to the first to bring either of said type-sets into operative relation with said key-levers, a case-shift device for shifting said platen, and vibrator-actuatin levers pivotally supported on said case-shi t device so as to properly position the ribbon-vibrators relatively to said platen, and connected with said first unit was to move therewith to bring into operative engagement with said interponent the vibrator lever corresponding to the t pe set moved to effective position.

21.- The combination of two' units; one unit comprising a plurality of type-sets and a plurality of universal bars, one for each type-set ;the other unit comprising a platen, an escapement and a single set of keys; and means to cause a relative movement between said units to render any one of said typesets and said keys effective, and to render the corresponding universal bar and said escapement effective.
22. vThe combination with a platen, of a plurality of type-sets, said type-sets being separately disposed and arranged adjacent to each other, a plurality of universal bars, one for each type-set, a single carriage escapement, a truck upon which said type-' sets and said universal bars are mounted, and means for moving said truck to bring any one of said type-sets into eifective relation with the platen and the associated universal bar into effective relation with said escapement.
23. The combination with a platen and a carriage therefor, of a plurality of sets of type-bars, a plurality of type-bar segments,
one segment for each set of type-bars, a a
truck upon which said segments are supported and arranged adjacent to each other,
a plurality of universal bars, there being one associated with each set of type-bars, said universal bars being supported by'said truck, a single carriage escapement, and means for moving said truck to bring either set of type-bars into effective relation with said platen and the associated universal bar into effective relation with said carriage escapement.

The combination with a platen and a carriage, of a plurality of type-sets, a plurality of universal bars, one for each typeset, a single carriage escapement comprising a dog rocker, an interponent, and means to move any one of said type-sets into effective relation with said platen, and to move the corresponding universal bar into effective relation with said interponent, so that the dog rocker may be actuated through the intermediary of said interponent by the effective universal bar.
25. The combination with a vplaten, of type-bars, a support for said type-bars, a plurality of universal bars carried by said support, a carriage escapement, and means to move said support to render any one of said universal bars effective with said escapement.
26. The combination of two units; one unit comprising a plurality of type-sets, a plurality of universal bars and a plurality of ribbon-vibrators, one universal bar and one ribbon-vibrator for each type-set; the other unit comprising an element actuable by any one of said universal bars; and means to cause a relative movement between said units to render any one of said universal bars effective with said element, and to connect the associated ribbon-vibrator with said element.

The combination with a platen, of a plurality of type-sets, said type-sets being separately disposed and arranged adjacent to each other, a plurality of universal bars, one for each tytpe-set, a plurality of ribbonvibrators, one or each typeset, an element actuable by any one of said universal bars, a truck upon which said type-sets and said universal bars are mounted, and means for moving said truck to bring any one of said type-sets into effective relation with said platen, and the associated universal bar into effective relation with said actuable element, and to connect the corresponding ribbonvibrator with. said element.

The combination of two units; one unit comprising a plurality of type-sets, a plurality of universal bars and a plurality of ribbon-vibrators, one universal bar and one ribbon-vibrator for each type-set; the other unit comprising a platen, an escapement, an interponent and a single set of keys; and means to cause a relative moveplurality of'sets of type-bars, said sets be- I ing separately disposed and adjacent to each other, a plurality each set of type-bars, a plurality of ribbonvibrators, one for each set of type-bars, a single carriage escapement, an interponent by which said escapement may beactuated, a truck upon which said type-bars are mounted, and means for moving said truck to bring any one of said sets of type-bars into effective relation with the platen, the associated universal bar into effective relation with said interponent, and to connect the associated ribbon-vibrator with said interponent.

The combination of two units; one unit comprising a plurality of sets of 'typebars a plurality of universal bars and a )luralit of ribbon-vibrators, one universal ar an one ribbon-vibrator for each set of type-bars; the other unit comprising a platen, an escapement, an interponent to actuate said escapement and a single set of keys; and means to cause a relative movement between said units to render any one of said sets of type-bars effective with said platen and under the control of said keys, to render the corresponding universal bar effective with said interponent, and to connect the corresponding ribbon-vibrator with said interponent.

The combination of two units; one unit comprising a plurality of sets of typebars, a plurality of universal bars and a plurality of ribbon-vibrators, one universal bar and one ribbon-vibrator for each set of typebars; the other unit comprising a platen, an escapement, an interponent to actuate said escapement and a single set of keys; means to cause a relative movement between said units to render any one of said sets of typebars effective with said platen and under the control of said keys, to render the corresponding universal bar effective with said interponent, and to connect the correspondof universal bars, one forv ing ribbon-vibrator with said interponent,
and means to maintain the type-set effective and the associated ribbon-vibrator in connected relation wlth said actuable interponent;
said keys through the intermediary of any one of said universal bars; and a space-bar adapted to actuate said escapement independently of said universal bars.
35. The combination of two units; one
unit comprising a plurality of type-sets and a ribbon-controlling device for each of said type-sets; the other unit comprising a platen and a single set of keys; andmeans to cause a relative movement between said units to "render any one of said type-sets and the corresponding ribbon-controlling device eifective under the control of said keys.

The combination with a platen, of a plurality of type-sets, said type-sets being separately disposed, a ribbon, a truck upon which said type-sets and said ribbon are mounted, and means for moving said truck to bring any one of said type-sets and said ribbon into eifective relation with said. platen.

The combination of two units; one unit comprising a plurality of type-sets, a plurality of universal bars, one for each type-set, and ribbon-feeding mechanism; the other unit having intermediate mechanism; and means-to cause a relative movement between said units to bring any one of said universal-bars and said intermediate mechanism into effective relation, so that said ribbon-feeding mechanism may be actuated.
42. The combination of two units; one unit comprising a plurality of type-sets, a plurality of universal bars, one for each type-set, a ribbon and ribbon-feeding mechanism comprising a cross-rod; the other unit having intermediate mechanism, said intermediate mechanism comprisingan interponent, and
an element actuated by said interponent, said element engaging with the cross-rod of the other unit; and means to cause a relative movement between said units to bring any one of said universal bars into effective relation with said interponent so that said ribbon-feeding mechanism may be actuated.
43. The combination of two type-sets, a truck upon which said'type-sets are mounted, two universal bars on said truck, one for each type-set, a ribbon, ribbon-feeding mechanism on said truck, a relatively-fixed interponent, a relatively-fixed actuating element connected to said interponent and engaging with said ribbon-feeding mechanism, means for moving said truck to bring either one of said universal bars into effective relation with said interponent, and means for permitting a relative movement between said ribbon-feeding mechanism and said actuating element when said truck is being moved.
