COLLAR-FASTEN tournoi.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented lllfay itil, .lili et..
Application filed April S23, 1913. Serial No. '763,1U5.
To all whom 'it may concern lie it known that l, lil'o'ro Anim, a subject oi the lln'iperor oi Japan, reeiding` at loston, in the county oit Sull'oll and tritate ot ll'laesachueetta, have invented new and nseli'ul lniproveinents in Collar-llaeteners, oi which the follmvinigiV is a speeilication.
lilly invention relates to a collar fastener, the primary object thereo'lE being;l to provide a device ot this character which is adapted to he secured to the liront collar button ot a .shirt neel; band and which is provided with nieune for eiinagingg the meeting ende of a collar lo secure the saine in adjusted poeition.
.l lurther object et the invention is to provide a collar fastener oi' this nature which is Simple .in construction Se as to be inexpensive in the coat ol manufacture, and nf'lioeie collar gripping jaws may be readily engaged with the meeting' ends ot the collar and will Serve eil-eetively to secure the foune when properly adjusted..
'lfhe invcnilion coneiate in the features ot' construction, combination and arrangement ol partea hereinafter fully described and clainied rel'erence beine; had 'to the aecompanyinp; drawing3 in which:
Figg'ure l is a :liront elevation olf the device in use; Fig'. Q is a vertical sectional view taken throuali the saine; llie. 3 is a horizontal sectional view therethrough; Fig. il: a detail perspective view of the fastener alone, showing the lariinlino` jaws; in inoperative poeitioin and; Fig. 5 ia a side elevation of the saine.
ln the drawing, the numeral l designates the body oit the device lwhich ie constructed iti-oni a piece oi sheet metal Se as to provide superinipoeed, rvflativehv spaced plateel and PM the ill-uriner plate being provided with a Slot '-.liter the reception ot tie Shank of a collar butto-n, auch ae the front collar hutton shown at i for securing` the meeting eduticey oi? the collar neel; hand G together, the head ot said collar button beiner adapted to be disposed Within the ,space provided between the platee 2 and 3. il collar engaging portion 'l oit the device is Secured by solderintj., riveting' or in any other suitable inanner to the plate 3 of the body l. rl`he collar engaging' portion of the device includes a pair ot leubstinitially lll-shaped n'ienil'iere S and 9, the relatively spaced, parallel portiona or plat-es 10 and 1l of the foi-nier ineinber being' disposed 'farther apart than the relatively spaced plateel .l2 and lil of the latter. The plate .ll is provided with parallel elite .llland Al5 extending* through the outer edge thereof and the portion interveninff between the said elite is heat upwardly to torni a movable aw 1G which is adapted to coact with the lined jaw provided by the ren'iainingg` side portions il' of the plate ll. rThe plate ll is provided with a Central out away portion or slot i8 openiini` through its outer edge and which ie narrower than the jaw lo, so that the latter will be engaged by the side portions l5) of the plate 13. The plate l2 ie provided with a substantially U- Shaped slit 2O having' the extremity oll its parallel portions terminating" in spaced relation to the outer edge oit the Said plate5 so that a movable jaw 2lV is iornied. Thie j aw is adapted to coact with the jaws formed by the portions i9 ot the plate '13, and is provided with marginal outetruclt ride'eel which are inclined toward the hase oi the jaw and are adapted to be en ;g'acjed by the inwardly iirojecting* arln 255 or a clamping lever 2l, which latter is; pivotally mounted hy means; ot a pivot rod upon the cute"- uiost plate l() with the said arin 2?; inovable through a alot 2G in the said plate. rllhe outermost arin 2l ot the. lever Q4 is adapted to be manually operated in inducing the arni Ql into elanipinn en janeinent with the jaw 21. and ie ann'ularly disposed with respect to the aaid arin 23 no that` it will reet apgainet the outer :tace of the plate lll when in its operative engrap/"iller position.
ifroin the foregoing, it ,Should be apparent that the fa ier includeel an inner pair ol jawn ter engagement with one end portion et the collar, theee jaws beine' tornicd by the Side portions l? ot the plate l l and the inl'erveninel portion lo oit the Said plate5 an outer pair ot jaws constituted hy the side portions if) olf the plate l?) and the plate l2, the adjacent jawn4 ot both pairs being' adapted "For ennao'euieiit with cach other when in una and n'ieane by which the outermost jaw ol the outer pair inay he forced inwardly to opera te all ot the movable jaw-e.
`When the device is constructed ot metal, as just described, it ia tempered so that the movable jaws will be reeilient, and it may be nickel plated or gold plated as desired so as to present a neat and attractive appearance.
lVhen the fastener is attached to the 'trent collar button ot the neel: band ol a Shirt ae lO-'S lli) previously described, the free extremities of the respective plates of its collar gripping portion 7 being disposed uppermost, the meeting ends of the collar may be secured in their proper relatively adjusted positions by first inserting the end portion of the collar which is to be innermost between the movable jaw 1G and the fixed jaw 17, and then, by inserting` the outer end portion of the collar between the jaws 19 and 21, whereupon the manipulating arm 27 of the clamping lever Qd is thrown inwardly into its operative position with its inner arm 23 in engagement with the side portions of the plate 12 and the movable jaw 2l. This action of the lever 2l will cause the plate l2 to be inclined inwardly and the jaw 2l to be inclined outwardly due to the provision of the ridge Q2, whereby the outer portion of the collar will be evenly engag'ed by the said jaw and the side portions of the plate, thus preventing wrinkling of the same. The inward movement of this aw 2l and the side port-ions of the plate l2 should be sufficient to transmitinward movement to the movable jaw 16, so that the innermost portion of the collar will be clamped between the latter jaw and the fixed jaw 17. Tn the event that it should be found desirable to loosen the collar or tighten the same, it is merely necessary to release the clamping lever Qd and to adjust the end portions of the collar to the desired extent within the respective gripping jaws of the device, whereupon the clamping lever may then be moved into 4its operative position.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it should be apparent that I have provided a simply constructed and neat collar fastener, by the use of which a collar may be adjusted from time to time so as to be most comfortable to the wearer and which may be engaged with the collar conveniently and quickly without the trouble incident with the use of the ordinary collar button as the sole means for attaching' the end portions of the collar to the shirt neck band.
This device may be constructed small in size so as to be covered by the neck tie and thus rendered inconspicuous as is the case in the use of a collar button alone. T desire to have it understood, however, that minor changes in the details of construction may be resorted to in practice without departing from the scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
l. A collar fastener comprising a body portion adapted to be secured detachably to the neck band of a shirt, a collar-gripping portion connected with the said body portion and including pairs of relatively movable gripping jaws, Jthe adjacent jaws of said pairs being adapted for engagement with each other, and means engageable with the outermost jaw for forcing the latter inwardly.
2. A collar fastener comprising a body portion adapted to be secured detachably to the neck band of a shirt, a collar-gripping portion connected with the said body and including a plate of resilient material having parallel slits therein forming relatively movable jaws yadapted to have one end of the collar wedged therebetween, a second pair of movable jaws for engagement with the opposite lend of the collar, the innermost jaw of the last-named pair being engageable with one of the first-named jaws, and means carried by the body for forcing the outermost jaw of the second pair inwardly.
3. A collar fastener comprising a body portion adapted to be secured detachably to the neck band of a collar, an inner pair of collar-gripping jaws connected with the body, an outer pair of jaws connected thereto, the outermost jaw of the outer pair being in the form of a resilient plate having a U- shaped slit therein forming a yieldable tongue having its free end disposed innermost, outstruck marginal ridges formed on the said tongue, the said ridges being inclined toward the base portion of the tongue, a plate connected with the body and being disposed outwardly of the outer jaw of the outer pair, and a clamping member pivotally mounted upon the said plate and having an angular extension engageable with the outer faces of the ridges of the tongue carried by the last-named aw.
Tn testimony whereof i affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
