To all whom it may concern Be it known that we. HAZEL G. TI-UTE and JOHN C. HUGHns, citizens of the United States, residing at Cathlamet, in the county of VVahkialrum and State of li ashington, have invented certain new and useful In1- provements in Copy-Holders; and we do declare the following to be a full clear, and exact description of the invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in copy holders.
One object of the invention is to provide a simple and efiicient copy holder having an improved construction and arrangement of feeding mechanism for feeding the copy through the machine in a step by step movement thus bringing each successive line thereon into position to be readily seen and copied.
l/Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.

By reference to the accompanying drawings it will be seen that our improved copy holder comprises a base plate or board 1 which may be of any suitable size and shape and which is here shown as being oblong. Secured to the base board or plate 1 near its ends are roller bearing standards 2 and 3 which are here shown and are preferably in the form of flat rectangular metal plates the lower ends of which are bent at right angles to form attaching flanges which are screwed or otherwise rigidly secured to the base board or plate 1. The bearing plates 2 and 3 are connected at their upper ends and are firmly braced by av tie rod 4, the ends of which are reduced and threaded where they engage the upper ends of the end of the hearing plates, said reduced ends of the rods forming shoulders which engage the inner sides of the plates and brace the latter in one direction. With the threaded projecting ends of the rods are engaged clamping nuts 5 which when screwed up on said ends engage the outer sides of the plates and brace the same in this direction.
Formed at suitable positions in the plates 2 and 3 are bearing apertures in which are revolubly mounted the ends of the pintles 6 of the copy supporting and feeding roller 7. The ends of the pintles 6 project some distance beyond the outer sides of the plates 2 and 3 and have fixed thereon roller operating disks or wheels 8, the edges or peripheries of which are preferably milled or serrated, whereby a firm grip may be obtained on said disks for turning the roller 7 in the desired direction. Engaged with the outer surface of the roller 7 are a series of copy gripping and holding rods 9 of which there may be ,any suitable number, three of said rods being shown in the present instance. The rods are spaced suitable distances apart around the roller and on that portion of the rods adjacent to the roller are arranged sleeves or tubes 10 of rubber or other resilient material which will frictionally engage the paper and hold the latter in yielding engagement with the roller, whereby when the latter is turned, the copy or paper will be positively fed through the holder. The rods 9 are support-- ed and held in yielding engag eat with the outer surface of the roll-er by ....5ans of wire springs 11 and 12. The springs 11 have their ends bent into eyes which are engaged with annular recesses in the ends of the rods and which are bent midway between their ends to form coils which are engaged with studs 13 secured to the inner side of the plates 2 and 8 as shown. hen thus arranged the pressure of the springs is exerted to hold the two lower copy gripping rods in yielding engagement with the lower side of the roller. The springs 12 have one end secured in the plates 2 and 3 and the other end bent to form an eye which is engaged with the grooves in the ends of the upper roller. The springs 12 are bent midway between their ends to form coils which are engaged with studs 14 secured to the inner sides of the plates 2 and 3 as shown. hen thus constructed and arranged the springs 12 will hold the upper paper gripping rod in ylelding engagement with the upper side of the feed roller.
In connection with the feed roller 7 means are provided for guiding the paper between the sleeves 10 of the paper gripping rods and the roller, said means comprising narrow segmental guide bars or strips 15 one of which is arranged at each end of the roller, said strips being bent at their ends and intermediate their ends to form recesses or pockets 16 which receive the end of the sleeve 10 on the rods 9 as shown. The guide bars or strips 15 are supported and held in position adjacent to the ends of the roller by standards 17 the upper ends of which are secured to the other sides of the guide bars and the lower ends of which are secured to the base board 1 as shown. When thus supported the guide bars 15 are spaced a slight distance from the roller and guide the paper or copy between said bars and the sleeves 10 of the rods. The paper or copy is further guided and led between the roller and the sleeves 10 of the gripping rods by a centrally disposed segmental guide bar or clip 18 which is arranged midway between tie end guide bars 15 and has one end secured to the lower rear paper gripping rod 9 and passes between the front lower gripping rod and the lower side of the roller, said clip having its forward end riveted or otherwise secured to an alining bar 19 which extends across the front side of the roller 7 and has its ends rigidly secured to the end guide bars 15 as shown. The alining bar 19 thus serves to support one end of the clip 18 and also as a rule or straight edge by means of which the copy may be trued up or adjusted when applied to the holder. The bar 19 may also be employed as a guide for the eye in reading the successive lines of the copy.
In order to impart a step by step move ment or intermittent motion to the roller 7, whereby the successive lines of the copy may be brought into proper position to be readily seen a feeding mechanism is provided, said mechanism comprising a ratchet gear 20 which is engaged with one of the pintles 6 of the roller preferably adjacent to the outer side of the roller bearing plate 2 and at the right hand side of the holder. The gear 20 is keyed or fixedly secured to the end of the shaft by a pin 21 which is engaged with a transverse aperture in the pintle and has its ends engaged with notches 22 formed in the opposite side of the hub 23 of the gear as clearly indicated in Fig. 11 of the drmvings. Co-acting with the gear 20 is an operating lever 24 having its inner end forked or provided with parallel attaching plates 25 in the ends of which are formed bearing apertures 26 through which the pintle 6 of the roller passes when the forked end of the lever is engaged with the opposite sides of the gear 20 as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3 O1 Lll d1aw1ngs,sa1d lever belng thus loosely or pivotally attached to the pintles. Carried by the lever 24 and secured thereto at the inner ends of the attaching plates 25 is a spring pawl 27 which is adapted to engage the teeth of the ratchet gear 20, whereby when the lever is swung upwardly said gear and the pintle on which it is mounted as well as the roller 7 will be turned thereby bringing the successive lines of the copy above the alining bar 19 and in position to be readily seen by the copyist.
In order to adjust or regulate the movement of the gear 20 and the feed roller 7 a stop mechanism is provided for the lever 24, said stop mechanism comprising a fixed stop stud 28 which is secured to the plate 2 and projects a suitable distance beyond the outer side thereof and is in the path of the upward movement of the lever 24. The movement of the lever in the opposite direction is limited by an adjustable stop stud 29 which is fixed in and projects laterally from a spring stud supporting plate 30, the inner end of which is loosely engaged with the pintle 6 of this end of the roller 7, whereby the plate 30 may be swung upwardly or downwardly to bring the stud 29 thereon opposite to a segmental series of apertures 31 formed in the plate 2 and through one of which the stud 29 is adapted to be projected by the spring action of the plate 30 thereby forming the lower stop for the lever 24 which, together with the upper stop 28, limits the throw or swinging movement of the lever and thereby regulates the distance the gear 20 and roller 7 are turned at each operation of the lever. By thus adjusting the feeding mechanism of the roller, it will be seen that the movement thereof may be accurately regulated to agree with the space or distance between the lines of the copy.
In order to attach the copy holder to a typewriting machine or other object and to adjustably support the holder suitable atmemes taching and supporting devices are provided, one of which is arranged at each end of the holder and comprises a standard 32, the ends of which are offset or arranged out of alinement by bending the standard intermediate its ends as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 12 of the drawings. The upper ends of the standards 32 are threaded and are engaged with longitudinal slots 33 formed in the base board or plate 1 near its ends. On the threaded upper ends of the standards are upper and lower clamping nuts 34 and 35, said lower nuts 35 being adapted to engage the lower side of the base board 1 while between the upper nuts 3 and the upper side'of the board are arranged washers 36 between which and the lower nuts 35 the base board is clamped when the upper nuts 34 are screwed downwardly on the ends of the standards. By thus connecting the up per ends of the standards with the base board or plate 1, it will be seen that the standards may be readily adjusted to a greater or less distance apart to accommodate the same to the object to which the holder is to be attached.
Slidably engaged with the lower ends of the standards 32 are supporting blocks 37 having clamping bolts 88 which are adapted to be screwed into engagement with the ends of the standards thereby adjustably fastening the blocks 3'? to said lower ends of the standards. The blocks 37 are provided with laterally projecting offsets 39 having therein horizontally disposed passages 410 with which. are slidably engaged the rods or shanks 41 of attaching clamps 4-2 which are rigidly secured to the inner enc s of the rods ll and are adapted to be engaged with the edge of a typewriter frame or other object, said clamps being rigidly secured to the typewriter frame or other object by clamping screws 43 arranged in the lower sides of the clamps as shown. ny means of the supporting and attaching devices herein shown and described, it will be seen that the copy holder may be readily adjusted vertically and also toward or from the operator thus bringing the copy into proper position to suit the vision of the copyist.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood with out requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is:
1. A copy holder comprising a base, hearing members secured to the base, a copy feed roller having pintles revolubly mounted in said bearing members, paper guides spaced from and partly circumscribing the ends of said roller, pockets formed on said guides, means to support said guides in fixed position, copy gripping rods revolubly mounted in said pockets and adapted to have frictional engagement with said feed roller, supporting springs secured to said bearing members and engaging said copy gripping rods whereby the latter are held in yielding engagement with said roller, an intermittent feeding mechanism applied to the feed roller whereby a step by step movement may he imparted thereto to bring the successive lines of the copy in position to be read.
2. A copy holder comprising a base plate, bearing plates secured thereto, a feed roller having pintles revolubly mounted in said bearing plates, hand wheels fixed on the ends of said pintles, whereby the roller may be turned, copy gripping rods having thereon resilient sleeves, means to hold said rods and sleeves in yielding engagement with said roller, a copy guiding member comprising standards secured to said base member, segmental. guides secured to the upper ends of said standards, said guides projecting substantially at right angles thereto and adapted to partly circumscribe the ends of said roller, whereby the copy inserted between the guides and the roller is directed between the roller and said gripping rods, pockets on the guides to revolubly receive said gripping rods, an alining bar arranged across the front of the feed roller and having its ends secured to said segmental guide bars, a guide clip having one end secured to one of said gripping rods and the other end to said. alining bar, and means to impart a step by step movement to said feed roller.
