SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,457, dated March 17, 1891.
Application filed September 25,1890. Serial No. 366,161. (No model.)
T0 at whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARVIN R. SALTER, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing atlthaca, in the county of Gratiot and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Copy-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in copy-holders and line'indicators; and the'invention consists in the peculiar construction of a copy-holding frame, on one side of which is arranged a vertical guide carrying a sliding block held in position by a spring, and means, such as a vertical reciprocating ratchet, for moving the block a predetermined distance equal to the space between two lines, said block being provided with an indicator-bar, and, further, in the peculiar construction of the mechanism for adjusting the amount of movement of said indicator-bar, and, further, in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts, all as more fully hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a detachedsideelevation showing the slidingblock and its connection with the vertically-reciprocating rack. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a similar device, showing the base constructed to be applied to a printers case. Fig. 4: is a front elevation of a similar device with the base adapted to stand upon a table.
A is a standard, preferably of wire and of rectangular shape, connected at the bottom to any suitable base 13.
O is a cross-bar slidingly engaging with the vertical portions A of the standard and carrying a suitable clamp D, adapted to be secured to the lower end of the copy, a corre sponding clamp E being secured to the top cross-bar F of the frame, the upper clamp being adapted to be attached to the upper end of the copy.
G is a vertical guide-bar secured in any suitable manner at one side of the standard A. Upon this guide-bar is slidingly secured the bldck H, to the inner edge of which is hinged the indicator-arm l, which extends across the front of the standard. This block is held in its adjusted position upon the guideba-r G by means of the spring J, and this block carries on its rear face the pawl K, which has the fingerpiece L secured thereto, by means of which it may be lifted. This pawl is adapted to engage in the verticallyreciprocating ratchet M, which is secured in suitable guides N, extending from the rear side of the bar G.
The ratchet-bar M is normally held in its lower position by means of the tension of the spring 0, secured to its lower end and to the frame.
Pis an actuating-lever pivotedin the frame or the base of the device passing through a slot Q in the bar G, engaging at its rear end with the lower end of the ratchet-bar M, while at its forward end it is provided with the finger-piece Q.
R is an adjusting-block slidingly secured to the bar G by means of the set-screw S and slot T, whereby the movement of the lever P may be adjusted to a greater or less extent, a scale U being formed on the bar G to indicate the amount of movement which the lever P will impart to the ratchet M proportionate to the position of the block R.
The parts being thus constructed and ar ranged, their operation is as follows: The indicator-bar I being turned in its hinge away from the standard A, the copy may be inserted readily and held in position by means of the clamps, as plainly shown in Fig. 1. The indicator-bar is now swung across the standard A, the operator places his finger upon the finger-piece L, and disengages the pawl K from the ratchet-bar. The block 11 may now be adjusted to any position desired on the bar H, whereby the indica-tor'rod I may be located just below the line which it is desired to read from the copy. lVhon the line is read and the next line is desired to be read, the open ator places his hand upon the fingenpiece Q and depresses the lever P, which raises the ratchet-bar M against the tension of the spring 0, and the pawl K is raised and drops into a lower notch in the ratchet-bar. The operator. now releases his hold of the lever P, when the spring 0 lowers the rack-bar M, and with it the block H and indicator-bar I, to the next line, the requisite amount of movement having been obtained by previously properly adjustin g the blook R.
in Fig. 3 I show a base consisting of a suitable clamp V, whereby the device may be applied to an ordinary printers case or similar location.
In Fig. at I show the standard applied to a base V, which may be set upon a desk or table when it is desired to be used in such a location. The construction shown in Fig. 1 is especially intended to be applied to use with type-writers, the base B extending; beneath the frame of the machine.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is- 1. In a copy-holder, the combination, with the rectangular wire standard, of the cross bars O, slidingly secured thereto, a clamp on the crossbar, a top cross-bar carrying a clamp, a verticalguide-bar G at one side of the standard formed with an elongated opening in its lower portion, guides extending out from the guide-bar,a ratchet-bar working in the guides, a spring for drawing the ratchet-bar down, a lever secured to the ratchet-bar and extending forward through the openingin the guidebar, a spring-pressed sliding block on the bar G,.a pawl on the block engaging the ratchetbar, an indicator-arm on the block, and an adjustable block R, having a set-screw passin g thereth rough for regulating the movement of the lever, substantially as described.
2. In a copy-holder, the combination, with the standard, of the guide-bar, a ratchet-bar supported thereby, a sliding block on the guide-bar, a spring interposed between the same, an indicator-arm hinged on the block, a lever and spring for actuating the ratchetbar, the guide-bar having an opening through which the lever passes, an adjustable plate for limiting the movement of the lever, and a pawl on the block, substantially as described.
3. In a copy-holder, a guide, a ratchet-bar supported thereby,a sliding block on the guide carrying an indicator-arm and a pawl, a lever connected with the ratchet-bar and passing through an elongated opening in the guide, a sliding plate to limit the movement of the lever, and a spring for normally holding the ratchet-bar down.
