WATER-TUBE ARCH FOR FIRE-BOXES.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM C. J ACOBS and HARRY F. JAooBs, citizens of the United States of America, and residents of aterloo, Blackhawk county, Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Tube Arches for Fire-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in ballling arches for fire-boxes of steam boilers, and the object of our improvement is to furnish such an arch made up of nested water tubes or pipes, arranged suitably within the upper part of the forward end of the fire-box, to provide additional. waterheating surfaces auxiliary to the boiler heated by said fire-box. Thi object we have accomplished by the means which are hereinafter described and claimed, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of a fire-box and the rear part, only, of a boiler in connection therewith, the parts broken away. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of said fire-box and boiler taken above the arch of nested water-tubes therein.
Similar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
We have shown herein a fire-box and rear part, only, of a communicating boiler. The fire-box has the usual side plates 6 connected by the crown-sheet 10 at the top, by the boiler-head 9 at the front and havin a rear sheet 7 which latter is provided with a firedoor 8. The boiler shell 13 encompasses the lower part of the boiler-head 9, the crown sheet 10 and the sides and rear end of the fire-box, in spaced relation thereto to furnish water-spaces all about said firebox, ex cept its bottom, which contains the movable grate 14. Said boiler shell contains a number of the usual flues which are arranged therethrough in communication with the upper part of the fire-box through said boilerhead.
The numeral 3 denotes a pair of longitudinal water-tubes spaced apart transversely and having their forward parts inclinec downwardly, and having their ends passed through the said boiler-head and the rear plate 7 to communicate with the waterspaces of the boiler.
The numerals 1 and 2 denote respectively like angularly bent water-tubes, which are nested in alternation between each other, as shown in Fig. 2, and thus arranged in two series, the ends of the transverse parts of the series 1 passing through the left-hand side plate 6 of the firebox, to communicate with the water-space 11 of said boiler, while the like ends of the transverse parts of the other series 2 pass through the right-hand plates of said lire-box, to communicate also with the water-space of the boiler. The said tubes 1 and 2 are all bent at approximately a rightungle, and have their other parts extending longitudinally across the forward part of the tire-box, and inclined downwardly to pass through the boiler-head 9 to communicate with the water-space 12 of the boiler. Both series of tubes emerge from opposite sides 6 of the firebox on a horizontal line with each other, and dip down at right angles in the same vertical planes, but are bent at right angles again at varying distances from the first angles of bending, as indicated in said Fig. 1, before being bent forwardly and downwardly toward the boiler-head. The tubes thus are located in close juxtaposition to each other, and while they do not entirely prevent the passage of the heated gases therebetween, they serve quite effectually as battling means for the general draft of heated gases arising from the coal under combustion in said fire-box, to deflect same toward the crown-sheet, and over the tubes to the boiler fines.
A shown in said Fig. 2, an intcrspace is left between the nested tubes 1 and 2 adjacent to the boiler-head, and we have covered this interspace with a number of fire-bricks 4 overlapped and supported upon transverse bars 5. In other words, the nested tubes, taken in combination with said impervious fire-brick 4, form an arch in the fire-box for the purposes mentioned. The tubes 1 and 2, beside the tube 3, thus furnish a large additional water-heating surface lo cated close to the fuel under combustion in said fire-box, and act to materially assist in the production of steam in said boiler. Said nested tubes 1 and 2 may be differently arranged to form an arch in the tire-box otherwise than as shown herein, without departing from the scope and principle of our invention.
The nested tubes 1 and 2 may be of different size from those shown, and diiferently located with relation to each other and the different parts of the fire-box, while the impervious part of the arch, covering the interspace between said tubes may be made of different forms or of different materials, and otherwise supported, if desired, without departing from the principles of this invention.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination with a boiler and its fire-box, of a baffling-arch in the latter, comprising two series of tubes spaced apart and all in communication at both ends with the boiler, said tubes being supported in nested relation between each other, but reversed to communicate at one end of each of one series with the boiler through one side of the firebox, while the like reversed end of each of the other series is in communication with the boiler through the opposite side of said firebox.
2.- The combination with a boiler and its fire-box, or" a bafiiing-arch in the latter, comprising two series of tubes of like form but reversed in position and alternated in juxtaposition, each tube being bent at approximately a right angle, with one part arranged transversely and the other part arranged longitudinally in said firebox, the two series being arranged so that the ends of the transverse parts of one series pass through one side of the fire-box and in communication with the boiler, while the transverse parts of the other series pass through the opposite side of the fire-box and also in communication with the boiler, the other ends of both of the fire-box nearest said head and spaced 7 from the top and bottom of said fire-box.
4:. The combination with a fire-box and a boiler surrounding one end and the opposite sides thereof, of nested tubes in said fire-box in communication through said opposite sides with said boiler alternately and extending into the fire-box transverselyin opposite directions to each other, and in close juxtaposition, all being then bent at right angles to extend to and communicate with said boiler through its front-head, leaving a medial interspace adjacent to said boiler head, and an impervious cover supported across the said interspace, said tubes being spaced from both the bottom and top of the fire-box and from the end of thefire-box opposite the boiler-head.
