WATER-TUBE SAFETY-BOILER AND FURNACE FOR SAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 585,441, dated J une 29, 1897.

Be it known that I, CALVIN B. I-IUMPHREY, a citizen ofthe United States,residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Tube Safety- Boilers and Furnaces for the Same; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in 'the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in water-tube steam-boilers; and it consists in a reverberatory heating-cham ber constructed in the form of an arch by means of watertubes, which will practically inclose the fire and will add efficiency to the boiler in absorbing heat which otherwise would be wasted in the side walls of the boiler-setting and also cause a better Vmixture of the gases, thereby producing a more perfect combustion, together with certain other advantages and details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.
It is a well-known fact that more perfect combustion of fuel can be obtained in a furnace having an arched roof or top than in any other known type. furnace, in connection with a water tube boiler, having an arched or reverberatory roof and at the same time to increaseand not diminish the steam capacity of such boilers by reducing the number of water-tubes or the area of heating-surface is Vthe prime object of my invention. This I have accomplished, as will appear from the following description and claim, t-aken in connection with the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a side sectional elevation of my improved steam-boiler and tire-chamber, which is constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a front sectional elevation of the saine, said section taken on the line X X of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of one of the water-legs used in connection with my improvement. To construct a boiler-furnace in accordance with my invention and adapt the same to a Water-tube boiler, consisting of the drum 1, having a front and rear water-leg 2, connected the one with the other by water-tubes 5,and arranged in a suitable setting 1, together with the necessary grate-bars 12, bridge-wall 13, and other well-known features connected to and forming a part of this class of boilers, I construct the water-legs at the base in the form of an arch, as will be seen by reference to Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings. Connecting the front and rear water-legs 2 and following the inner periphery of each of the said legs are a series of water-tubes 6, spaced at regular intervals to form an arch over the firechamber 11. Arranged in connection with this water-tube arch G are a series of tile 7, each of which consists of a refractory piece capable of fitting neatly upon the top of the tubes (5 to form an arch. These tile 7 are eX- tended downward to form an arch reaching to the side walls 4 of the setting and rearward to a point within a short distance of the rear wall, thereby forming an opening 9, through which the products of combustion may pass toward the draft-stack.
The grate-bars 12 are of ordinary construction, but the bridge-wall 13 is formed to correspond to the arch of the water-tubes 6 and tile 7, which arrangement will de fleet and distribute the products of combustion evenly at the rear of the bridge-wall. Arranged in connection and supported upon the two upper rows of water-tubes 5 is a partition of baflietile 8, the construction of which is best shown at Fig. 5 on the drawings.- These baffle-tile 8 extend from the rear wall-t of the boilersetting to within a short distance of the front wall, leaving an opening 10, leading to the draft-stack. The water-legs 2 are each supported upon suitable columns 3, arranged at the front and rear, which will support and maintain the boiler 1 and tubes in position inclined from the front to the rear.

The advantages of this construction and l arrangement of a boiler-furnace fire-chamber are many and obvious, as is also the construction of the boiler proper, among which are:
First. The arched or reverberatory 'form of the furnace or lire-box will inclose the lire, as before described, and add efficiency to the boiler in absorbing and utilizing the heat which otherwise would be wasted in the side walls of the furnace.
Second. The arched or reverberatory form of furnace or fire-chamber will insure a better mixture of gases and therefore more perfect combustion.
Third. The water-tubes at either side ofV the lire-chamber or furnace will protect the' side walls of the setting from the intense heat and add materially to the life of the Wal-ls, and with this arrangement it will be possible to set the boiler up without brick walls, if desirable, using ironwork lined with suitable non-conducting and non-combustible mate-` rial.
Fourth. In this design of boilers and ire` chamber it is possible to place more heating` surface in a given space than in other types of boilers.
At Fig. 6 on the drawings I have shown tile 15 supported upon two or more tubes, which` will prevent any dirt or dust from settling in i `the acute angles formed by the arch 7 and the side walls 4 of the setting. y It is obvious that two or more drums 1 mayl bridge-wall 13, having an archedtop,
be connected to each water-leg and the arch 7v increased or diminished as desired without departing from the spirit or materially altering the scope of my invention. Therefore I do not conne myself to the exact construction shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with a boiler such as described, the water-legs 2, connected to the said boiler, a series of parallel inclined Water-tubes 5, connecting` the one leg with the other, a second series of Water-tubes 6, beneath the first-mentioned set forming an arch over the fire-chamber, baffle-tile supported upon the tubes forming the said arch, an opening A9v, at the rear of the said tile, less in area at the top of the arch than at the bottom, a lire-chamber 11 at the front, and a whereby a segmental opening is formed between the said bridge-wall and baffle-tile above, all arranged and combined for service substantially as and for the purpose described.
