BOTTLE-HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RAYMOND B. GIL- CHRIST, a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to bottle-holders and more particularly to the type used in connection with a cork-puller, corking machine, or the like, and whereby the bottle is secured in position with respect to the operating mechanism of the machine.
The invention designs to provide an improved bottle-holder of this class which embodies jaws which are spring pressed into one of their alternative positions and are connected together for simultaneous positive and equidistant movement.
The invention further designs to improve the construction and operation of bottleholders.
The invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bottle-holder embodying the invention, the same being associated with a corkpuller, parts of which are shown. Fig. 2 is a detail inner side elevation of one of the bottle-holder jaws. Fig. 3 is a front elevation and Fig. 4 is a section on line 4L4 of Fig. 3, on a larger scale.
10 denotes a cork-puller frame provided with a clamp 11 whereby the frame can be secured to a table, counter or shelf. J aws 13 and 14 are separately pivoted on studs 15 which are removably secured in the frame, 6. g. by screw-threads. Each jaw is extended forwardly or laterally from the pivot to form a' bottle-holding portion 16 which is provided with an elastic lining 17 for engaging a bottle. Pivot studs 15 for the jaws are arranged relatively eccentric with respect to each other and the jaws are connected for simultaneous positive and equidistant shift by interfitting teeth 18 and 19 respectively formed on the jaws. This connecting means insures equidistant, positive and simultaneous movement of the jaws with respect to a fixed central point, so that bottles of different sizes will be centralized Specification of Letters Patent.

thereby beneath the frame and so bottles will be held in proper relation with respect to the mechanism for drawing a cork. Each jaw is extended rearwardly to form an extension 20 in which a pocket 2]. is formed and one or more springs 22 are interposed between these jaw-extensions so that they will be pressed to constantly tend to force the jaws into closed or holding position and so operating means for the jaws a. g. a lever, can be employed for shifting parts of the mechanism with which the bottle-holder is associated, independently of the holder-jaws. A screw 23 is extended through the springs and is screw-threaded to one of the jaw-extensions 20. Springs of sufficient force to securely hold a bottle exert great strain on the jawpivots, and therefore it is difl'icult to remove the pivots while the jaws are under springpressure. By adjusting screw 23 when the jaws are compressed so that the head of the screw will engage a washer 2-1, the springs can be held compressed between said washer and the extension of jaw 13 so that the jaws will be relieved of spring-pressure and thereupon the jaws can be readily removed or detached from the frame.
An operating-lever 26 is pivoted to the frame as at 27, and is provided with an arm 28, adapted to engage a roller or abutment 29, provided at the front end of one of the holder-jaws in this instance the jaw 13. Lever 26 is vertically movable and independently pivoted with respect to the holderjaws so that it can be operated independently of the jaws, and arm 28 which moves about fulcrum 27 is adapted to engage and shift abutment 29 to open the jaws through the action of interlocking teeth 18 and 19 against the force of springs 22. The lever is also provided with a seat 30 for abutment 29 whereby the pressure of the jaws will be applied to hold lever 26 in position to hold or look the jaws in open position. hen the lever is in the position shown by dotted lines, Fig. 1, the upper shoulder of notch 30 will be disposed above the plane extending through the center of the spring-presscd stud 29 and the pivot 27, and said stud being seated in notch 30, will yieldingly hold the lever against pivotal movement, the pressure of the stud being applied to hold it in said notch, so that it is necessary to apply sufficient force to the lever to displace the stud out of the notch before the lever will be released. In such position, the lever being held against displacement, will hold the stud 29 so that the jaws will be held apart. In practice, lever 26 is employed to operate the cork-puller but as the cork-puller forms no part of the present invention, this mechanism is not set forth in detail.
The operation of the improved bottleholder will be as follows: Assuming the parts to be in normal position illustrated in dotted lines Fig. 1, the jaws will be in open position and the lever will be retained in position to hold the aws. A bottle can then be placed between the jaws. Operation of the lever will swing arm 28 away from abutment 9-9 so that the jaws will be free to be pressed against the bottle. The connecting-means between the'jaws insures positive and equidistant movement of the jaws so that the bottle will be centralized by the spring and independently of the operating-means and so the bottle will be held while the lever is independently operated for the cork-puller or machine. hen the bottle is to be released the lever is shifted to its normal position and during such shift 28 will first shift the roller to spread the aws and release the bottle and the roller will then pass into seat so the lever will be held by spring-pressure in position to hold the bottle-holder in open position.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a bottle-holder, the combination of a frame, a pair of jaws pivoted in said frame, and relatively eccentric to each other, interfitting teeth on said jaws for efiecting positive and equidistant movement with re spect to a fixed central point so bottles will be centralized by the aws, means for exerting pressure on the jaws in direction to press with respect to each other, an extension at one side of the pivot of each of the jaws, a spring between said extensions, said jaws being extended to the other side of the pivot to form a bottle holding portion, means connecting the jaws for effecting positive and equidistant movement with respect to a fixed point so bottles will be centralized by the j awe, and a lever for shifting the jaws against the force of said spring vto open them.
