PORTABLE PIVOTED-LEVER CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb.. 5, rigid.
Application filed October 28, 1914. Serial No. 869,099.
To all/whom 1f/may concern:
Be it known that I, EARLE M. MORSE, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Foxboro, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Pivoted-Lever Clamps, of which the .following is a specification.
This invention relates to wood working and more specifically to portable pivotedlever clamps.
rllhe object of my invention is to provide a light and simple clamping device, readily portable, for use especially in foundries to hold flasks or molding frames together. The rapidity and facility with which it may be clamped and unclamped upon a molding frame makes it especially desirable for this use. It is also extremely durable, and efli cient in operation.
Other objects of this invention not at this time more particularly enumerated, will be clearly understood from the detailed description and drawings forming a. part of this specification.
Furthermore, this invention consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts more particularly described in the following specification and embodied in the claim appended hereunto and forming a part of this application.
Referring now to the drawings which are merely illustrative of my invention Figure l is a side elevation of my device in operative position, while Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the same taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. l.
Referring further to the drawings wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout the respective views, l designates a rod having formed on one end and integral therewith, an arm 2. A U-shaped member 3 is adapted to slide forwardly and backwardly upon said rod, a pin et being inserted through both arms of said U-shaped member above said rod. A lever 5 is pivotally mounted at 6 near the upper end and between the upright arms of said U-shape'd member 3. The pivoted end of the lever 5 is formed with a serrated portion 7a thereon, that is concentrically disposed with respect to the pivot 6. Said end of the. lever also has formed thereon a concaved portion 7, the extremities of which form biting teeth, one tooth, forming the terminus for one end of the serrated portion 7, while the other tooth projects beyond the plane of the serrated portion 7a. I/Vhen the arm 2 is placed on one side of a molding frame, the U-shaped member 3 is moved forwardly with the lever in a lowered position unt-il the serrated portion 7a is against the opposite side of the frame to be clamped. The lever 5 is then raised upwardly so that the extremities of the concave portion 7 on the opposite end thereof is forced into contact with the side of the frame 8 thus holding said frame tightly together and bringlng lever 5 into locked relation.
The utility, adaptability, and advantages of my improved form of portable pivotedlever clamps being obviously apparent, it is unnecessary to further enlarge upon the same herein. A most essential feature of the device is the fact that the biting teeth or extremities of the concaved portion 7 on the pivoted end of the lever when moved into positive engagement with the object to be clamped when the lever is raised will not permit any slacking off the clamping means when the contact is shifted from the serrated portion 7a to positive engagement by the teeth upon upward movement of said lever.
What I claim as mv invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
y In a portable lever clamp, an L-shaped bar, a frame slidably mounted on the lower arm of said bar, a lever pivotally mounted on said frame, a serrated object engaging face on the pivoted end of said lever concentrically disposed with respect to the pivot point, said serrated portion terminating at one end in a biting` tooth, and an additional biting tooth on said end of the lever spaced from the first mentioned tooth and projecting beyond the plane of the serrated portion whereby the biting teeth are adapted to be moved to positive engagement with the object when the lever is swung without any slack during said movement.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EARLE M. MORSE.
