To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ADELIA BELLE BEARD, a citizen of the United States, residing in Flushing, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new Toy, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an educational toy, preferably composed of paper or the like and has for its object to produce an article of this kind made of paper or similar suitable material in which the particular figure which forms the body of the toy is caused to stand upright in a substantially vertical flat plane while laterally extending or transverse members are adapted to be removably secured to said body portion and to project adjustably in a lateral direction from the body portion at various angles thereto.

In order that my invention may be clearly understood, I will now describe the embodiment thereof which is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of the body portion of the article which in this case is a toy bird; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the transverse member in the form of wings; Fig. 3 is a view of the wings unattached to the body, and Fig. 4 is a representation of a portion of the stand by which the object may be supported.

The body portion, when made of thin material such as paper, or card board, is caused to stand by bending the lower part thereof on the dot-ted line shown in Fig. 1 to a position at right angles to the upper part thereof. The lower part may now be placed 'on a horizontal surface and the article will stand thereon, the upper or main part being substantially vertical. To make the article more stable, the stand portion shown in Fig. 4 may be used. The lower part of this portion is bent along the dotted line to a position at right angles to the upper part and the upper part is then glued or otherwise suitably secured to the back of the main body portion so that the bent lower parts of the two portions are in the same horizontal planes or substantially so, the horizontal part of the body portion of the article extending forwardly and the corresponding part of the auxiliary stand portion extending rearwardly. The laterally extending or transverse element, which is located and supported in a plane intersecting that of the bird, consists of two Wings connected to gether by a contracted portion, the connecting region or line being flexible so that the two wings may be bent along this line to assume various angular positions with respect to each other. The wing element is adapted to be detachably secured to .the top of the body portion, the flexible connecting region of the two wings contacting with said body portion and the wingsextending laterally thereof, one forwardly and the other rearwardly from the plane of the body portion. To accomplish the connection one or both of the cooperating elements are provided with slits. As shown, the body portion is provided with the angular slit B while the wing element is provided with the slit A in the line of bending. The

two elements are positioned in the assembling of the parts, with the slits in alinement and are moved together until the bot toms of the slits contact With each other and prevent further movement. he edges of each of the slits engage frictionally with opposite sides of the adjacent element and the elements are thus detachably maintained in position.

The assembling of the various parts of the toy is of high educational value and the resultant article constitutes a life-like representation of the subject of the toy, the wing elements being adjustable to various positions to represent such subject in different positions or attitudes.

I claim:

1. A toy comprising a base, a flat upright member connected therewith, and a transverse member supported by the upright member, a slit connection forming the means of support between the upright and the transverse member, said slit connection being located at an intermediate part of the transverse member whereby parts of the transverse member project from both sides of the fiat main member.

2. A toy comprising a fiat main body member, means for supporting said member in a substantially vertical plane, and a transverse member supported on the main member, said transverse member being detachably secured to the body member by a clamping slit connection, the transverse member being composed of sections flexibly united in the region of the silt connection whereby the sections of the transverse member project from the tWo flatfaces of the body member and are adjustable to various angles with respect to the body member.

3. A toy comprising a flat main body member, means for supporting said member in an upright position, a transverse member composed of two flat sections united by a contracted portion, each of said sections being located in a plane intersecting the 10 plane of the body member and a clamping ADELIA BELLE BEARD.
