W. 0; BEST.
SLIDING DOOR PASTENBR.
(Model.)
Patented- Sept. 27, 1887.
tirely out of the case.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
WILLIAM 0. BEST, OF SEWARD, NEBRASKA.
SLIDING-DOOR FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 370,598, dated September 27, 1887.
Application filed February 28, 1887. Serial N 0. 229,236.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM 0. BEST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seward, in the county of Seward and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sliding Door Fasteners, of which the following is a full and clear description, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a sectional view on the line y y of Fig. 2, showing the door closed and fastened. Fig. 2 is a similar view on the line a; x of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the hasp detached.
My invention relates to means for securing sliding doors; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, which I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe its construction and the manner in which I carry out the same.
In the said drawings, A represents a suitable case open at one end and secured to the door-frame by bolts A, passing through the same and through the case at the corners thereof.
Within the case A the bar 0 is fitted to slide, said. bar having at its rear end shoulders or projections c, which strike against other shoulders in the interior of the case, so that said bar is prevented from being drawn en- The front end of the bar O,which passes through an opening in the door, is provided with a spirally grooved opening, or, if preferred, with a thimble, E, having a spiral groove, e, as shown in Fig. 1.
The hasp is formed of two sections, B B, hinged or united together, as shown in Fig. 3, one of said sections, B, being securely fixed to the door, while the other section, B, is permitted to have a free swinging movement to engage and be secured to the bar 0 when the latter is drawn outward.
The outer end of the swinging section B of the hasp is provided with an opening adapted (Model) to receive the front end of the bar 0, and there is formed through said section B elongated slots or openings 9, through which and through the thimble E'in the sliding bar a locking-bo1t, D, may be passed to secure the hasp in position and fasten the door.
The locking-bolt D is provided with a pin or stop, d, near its lower end, which engages the spiral groove in the front portion of the sliding bar and is passed through the elongated slots in the swinging section of the hasp, and by being turned at right angles to said slots is prevented from displacement when the car is in motion.
The locking-bolt D may also be provided with an opening or slot in itslower end for the application of a seal when necessary.
By reason of the above construction I am enabled to provide a secure and substantial fastening for doors, and one that does not readily get out of repair.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a door-fastener, the case A, secured to the door-frame, in combination with a bar fitted to slide in said case and provided with shoulders or limiting-stops, a hasp provided with elongated slots fitted to the door and engaging the front of the bar, and a locking-bolt having a pin adapted to be passed through said elongated slots in the hasp and through the bar, whereby the parts are secured, substantially as described.
2. In a sliding-door fastener, the case A and the bar fitted to slide therein and provided with a spirally-grooved opening in its front end, in combination with a hasp having elongated slots in its front end in line with the grooved portion of said bar, and a lockingbolt having a pin or stop engaging said slots and opening, substantially as herein described.
I WILLIAM 0. BEST.
