SCREEN-DOOR HINGE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FLOYD ARMSTRONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Geneva, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screen-Door Hinges, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a hinge and has special reference to hinges which are adapted to be used in combination with screen doors whereby the screen door may be supported upon the outer portion of the casing without necessitating the removal of an in ner door for placing the screen door flush with the outer face of the casing.
The principal object of this invention is the production of a hinge, one sect-ion of which is provided with a plurality of yieldable lips which are adapted to engage the door thereby preventing the door from being marred.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel combinations,,constructions and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the complete hinge showing the same mounted upon a support. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the hinge illustrated in Fig. 1.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals there is provided a body 14 which may be supported upon the casing 15 by means of the usual screws or other members 14. This body 14; is provided with the upwardly bent elongated ears 16 which are adapted to carry the shaft 17, this shaft 17 being provided with the coiled spring 18. This form also illustrates a second body 19 having the narrow arms 20 formed at each end for supporting the second body 19 upon the shaft 17 so as to allow the same to swing freely thereon, while the spring 18 normally urges the same in one direction. This second body 19 is adapted to support the door or other closure member 21. The ears 16 are provided with the laterally bent yieldable lips 22 which extend at right-angles thereof, for

engaging the edge of the door and preventing the hinge from cutting into the edge thereof. By referring to Fig. 1 it will be seen that the arms 20 are positioned at the same distance apart as the cars 16 whereby the arms will rest upon the upper portion of the two ears and in this manner relieve considerable of the strain from the shaft 17 From the foregoing description it will be seen that a simple and efficient hinge has been produced which may be positioned upon the casing Or other support for allowing a door or closure member to be carried by the support upon the outer portion thereof without necessitating a special size closure member for fitting within the opening formed in the support.
It will be noted that this hinge is formed from a blank sheet of metal and therefore when the same is placed upon a support any strain upon the hinge will cause the same to easily yield while the lips 22 will engage the rear edge of the door and will, therefore, prevent the ears 16 from cutting into or marring the door.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
A hinge comprising a primary and an auxiliary section, said primary section formed of sheet metal to provide outwardly bent ears, a plurality of laterally bent yieldable lips integrally formed upon said ears and adapted to move and independent of the body portion of said primary section, said auxiliary section provided with a pair of elongated arms, a. shaft passing through said arms and said ears for holding said sections in pivotal engagement with each other, said yieldable lips forming an abutment for the edge of a door carried by said auxiliary section, said lips adapted to yield when the door comes into engagement therewith, whereby accidental marring of the door will be prevented. 1
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
