Be it known that I, JOHN SETH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn,
in the county of Poweshiek and State of.
Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boilers, of which the fol lowing is a specification. I a
This invention is designed as an improvement over my prior Patent #1,059,573, which was granted to me on April 22, 1913, and has for its primary object the association of a stay-boltwith a shell sheet and crown sheet of a boiler so as to allow for the expansion and contraction of the same, wlthout injury to either the stay-bolt or of the sheets. i I
To those skilled in the art it is obvious that boilers which are at times under a tense heat, expand when in this state and as soon as the heat leaves, and the boiler cools ofl, the same contracts .to a great extent, thereby either causing the boiler sheet to crack or break after a certain length of t me or the stay-bolt to break ofl, which as 1s well known requires expenditure of much time and labor and very often great IIICQIIVBIl-y ience to repair the same. It is therefore a very important ob ect of the present invention to provide a stay-bolt which will positively connect the shell sheet and the crown sheet in the usual manner, but will likewise allow for a slight play of the bolt so as to eliminate the danger of either sheets or the stay-bolt breaking. Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention 'will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying "drawings and pointed out inthe claim forming a part of this specification. 1
.Referring to the drawings :--Figure 1 is a sectional view through a portion of an ordinary type of boiler, illustrating the application of my invention; Fig. 2 isya side elevation of an' attachment which is in engagement with the stay-bolt and crown sheet; and Fig. 3 is an end view'of the same. In the drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention a crown sheet 5 is provided w ich has arranged 1n spaced relation thereto in the ordinary manner a shell sheet 6; saidsheets' being provided with alining apertures 7 and 8, the
aperture or opening 8 which is provided in the shell sheet 6 being threaded for a purpose more fully hereinafter described.
My improved stay-bolt 9 comprises a conical head 10 and enlarged portion 11 which engages with the conical head 10, and a threaded; elongated shank 12. The inner face of the conical head 10 engages the inner face of the crown sheet 5, the enlarged portion 11 of the bolt extending through the aperture 7 of said crown sheet and the one end of the threaded shank 12 extending upwardly through the opening 8 of the shell sheet 6. The diameter of the threaded shank 12 is much smaller than that of the opening 8 as shown to advantage in Fig. 1. Threaded on the shank 12 of thebolt 9 is a nut 13, which is of a substantially globular contour, and normally lies in a plane shghtly beyond that of the shell sheet 6.
A housing which comprises a bushing or sleeve 14 which is provided with external threads 15 on. the one end thereof and external threads 16 on the opposite end thereof, is engaged with the shell sheet 6, the threads 16 thereof being engaged with the threaded opening 8 which is formed in said shell sheet. The external threads 15 which are formed on the outer end thereof are engaged wlth the threads 17 of the closure or cap 18. The bushing or sleeve 14 preferably tapers toward t e threaided end 16 thereof, so as to conform to the configurat1on of the nut 13 which is engaged on the interior thereof. The cap or closure 18 is preferably of a hemispherical configuration so as to allow for a vertical movement of the bolt 9 without contacting with the inner face of the cap.
A sleeve 19 is carried by the crown sheet 5 and is provided with a plurality of slots or cut out portions 20 which are formed on the end of the sleeve that has engagement with the crown sheet. The sleeve 19 is placed over the bolt 9, and is engaged on the outer end thereof by a nut 21 which holds the sleeve 10 into engagement with the crown sheet 5, said nut being screw threaded on the threaded shank 12 of the bolt 9 so as to prevent the movement of the crown sheet 5 on the stay-bolt.
From the foregoing it is obvious that a certaii'iamount of play is allowed the globular nut 13 in the bushing or sleeve 14, so as to allow for the expansion and contraction of the boiler without in any way endangering either the sheets or the stay-bolt.
It will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general and preferred em bodiment of my invention and-that various minor changes in detail of construction, proportion and arrangement of the parts may extending through a screw threaded opening in said shell sheet, a sleeve having a straight conical inner periphery terminating in a reduced externally screw threaded portion, the latter engaging the threaded opening in said shell sheet, a nut mounted on said shank and in said sleeve, said nut conforming to the configuration of the innor periphery of said sleeve and lying in engagement therewith, whereby stress is passed to said shell sheet from said sleeve when undue pressure is exerted on said nut, and a cap carried by said sleeve.
