CHARLES I. HULBEIELT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO HULBERT 82: 'DORSEY, A
FIR/M COMPOSED 0J3 CHARLES P. HULBER'E AND JI-IN T; DOBSEY, OF CHICAGO,
ILLINOIS.
Specification of Letters Patent. 1 Patented Apr, 21, 1914;.
Application filed February 18, 1914. Serial No. 818,471.
T0 at 4.0720121 it 'mfzg concern i Be it known that 1,,Cnnnnns P. lilo Lunar, a citizen of the United States, and resident (it @hicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plumbing-Fittings, of which the following is a specification, and which are illustrated. in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The invention relates to plumbingand more particularlyto a fitting adapted to be interposed in an inclined" drain at any one of a plurality of different positions and to provide an inlet opening to such drain at the same elevation in each of said positions.
In buildings having solid fioors, as those constructed from reinforced concrete, plumb ing fixtures which are so constructed as to discharge through the wall'are desirably em ployed. When a plurality of such fixtures, as a row of toiletclosets-are provided, these preferably all discharge into a common drain. To provide suitable drainage the drain pipe must be inclined, Whereas the toilet fixtures are preferably all located at the same level. Heretofore the connection of such fixtures to a common inclined drain has required the use of a fitting of different form in connection with each fixture.
The present invention accordingly contemplates a fitting which may be modified to provide an inlet opening at a predetermined level irrespective of the level of the drain pipe at the particular location where the.
connection is to be made.
The ob ect of the 1nvent1on is to facilitate the connection of so called wall closets and other forms of. toilets which discharge through the wail at the rear to a common drain. 4
In the accompanying drawings higure 1 is a front elevation showing an inclined drain equipped with a plurality of fittings of the form provided by the invention, the toilet closets to be connected with such fittings being shown in dotted lines and a detail of the floor of the building being shown in section; Fig. 2 is a detail front elevation of the fitting; Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 33 of 1; Fig. 1- is a plan view showing a form of fitting which may he einpl ed for the connection of two oppositely facing toilets to a common drain located in the intervening wall space, andFig. 5 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4.
The "fitting illustrated in the drawings is more particularly intended for use in connection With the installation 'of Wrought iron drainage systems.
When so used, a drain 24, which is preferably common to a plurality-of toilet closets, as 10, 11 and 12 is formed by the connection of an equal number of fittings, generally designated 13, andintervening sections, as 14. and 15, of wrought iron pipe to separate the said fittings in accordance with the spacing of the closets, 1
Each of the fittings 13 conveniently comprises a substantially cylindrical body ortion 16 having internally threadedhubs 17, 18 at its opposite ends. Intermediate. the ends of thecylindricalbody'portipn 16 and extending laterally outward therefrom .is a
hollow extension 19, the chamber, as 20, of which forms a well which is in communiation with the bore of the cylindrical body portion 16. Preferably the extension 19 has a horizontal flbor 21 and an outwardly and upwardly inclined top wall 22. -Most desirablythe floor 21 of the extension 19,, is on a level withthe bottom wall of the c'ylindrical body portionlfi of the fitting and the top wall'of the extension extends upwardly from the level of thetop wall of the body portion 16. By this means, the front wall,
as 23 of the extension is of a greater height than Width and extends from substantially the level of the under side of the cylindrical body of the fitting to an elevation considerably above that of 'the upper side of the body portion of the fitting. .In the original construction of the fitting the front wall 23 of the extension 19 is desirably closed. r
When a plurality of the fittings, 13, are
to be employed for the connection of a,
plurality of closets, as 10, 11 and'1-2, to a common drain 24, the front wall 23, of the extension 19 of each fitting is drilled to provide an opening 25 therein for the I .connection of the closet to the fitting at a fixed distance from the floor, as 26. As the pitch of the drain 24 serves to locate the Sev? oral fittings 13 at different elevations, the opening 25 in the front wall 23 of the several fittings will be located at different places, the said opening in the fittingwhich 4O pitch or inclination of the common 'drain op'ening 52S bvbolts, as A more subis located in a higher part of the drain being positioned lower down upon the fitting than are the said openings of the fittings which are located at a lower part of the drain. The toilet closets, as 10, 11 and 12 may be connected with the respective fittings 13 in any convenient manner, as for example in the manner illustrated inFig. 3. In this figure the rear wall of one ofthe closets, as 10, is represented at 27, the discharge opening in said wall. being shownat 28. In this instance the closet 10 is located against an upright wall or panel represented by dotted lines at- 29 and the fitting 13 is located in rear of this panel. The frontwall 23 of the lateral extension 19 of the fitting have been drilled at. the proper elevation to provide an opening 25 therein which is upon thesame lcvelas the discharge opening 28 in the rear .wall of the closet 10, a threaded nipple 30 is screwed into the opening 25 and extends through the panel 29. A flanged collar 31 is then screwed upon the front, end of 'the nipple 30 and secured against the rear wall of the closet 10 about the discharge ,stantial supportfor the closet may be obt'ainiagt by mounting a collar 33 upon the nipple 30 between the front wall 23 of the littinglt; and theeollar 31. and by the extensaon ot' the bracket arms or braces, as
- 34, fi-ionrthewollar 33 to the rear wall 37 of the closet above the discharge opening '28 Each of theclosets, as 10. lland 1'2 ma v elevation tor connection with the horizonbe sccuredto the corresponding fitting lit in the same manner as is shown for the closet 10, the ditterent location of the opening 27) in each fittin serving toperinit of all of the closets to e positioned at-i'the same distance from the floor 26 notwit'hstandin-"g, the
24. Usually each of" the. fittings 13, will be provided with an opening3-1'iat the upper side o'f'its. cylindrical body portion for the connectionthercwith of the usual vent, as 36.
'henclosets which are located at the op posite sides of a wall or partition are to be connected with a common drain, a fitting oi the-form shown in Figs. 4' and 5 will desirably be used. This fitting may take the general form of a so-called long sweep double 90 degree Y, having a central cylindricalbody pdrtion, as indicated at 37, and the two oppositely facing lateral branches,
as 38 and 39. The two branches dllrare each pre'l'erably made vertically flaring ad-- jacent their outer ends (Fig. 5) and in the original construction of the fitting, these branches will preferably lJQ'ClOSQtl at their outer ends. When a plurality of the fittings are to be mounted in an inclined drain (not shown) the closed ends of the latcal branches ,38 and 39 of the several fittings will be so drilled as to provide inlet openings, as 40, all of which will be located at the same elevation. ,By means of the invention fittings of a uniform design will serve for the connection of a plurality of plumbing fixtures, all located at the same elevation, with a connnoh drain. 'lhense of a fitting of special Form or the. co struction of built. up elbow branches to ditl'ercnt heights at the several places where tixlurcs are ocated is accordinglyavoided.
I claim as my invenLion,---
1. A drain l'or closets and the like comprising. in combination. a plurality of inclined pipe sections located in aliinuneut and a plurality of integral fittings each comprising a tubular part interposed between and connecting adjacent pipe sections and a vertically extended lateral receiving chamber communicating with the bore of the said tubular partand having an upright end wall, the said end walls of all of the said fittings being drilled at the same tally directed outlets of wall closets and the like.
2. A fitting for inclined drains comprising in combination, a cylindrical tubular body portion having its opposite ends adapted for connection with sectionsof the drain pipe and a pair of. oppositely facing verti- .call v extended lateral arms each having an end wall adapted to be drilled at any one ol? a plurality of different elevations for connection with the horizontallv directed outlet of a wall closet.
