MUSIC-HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELWIN J. BABBITT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Onaway, in the county of Presque Isle and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Music-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in music holders, and has for its object to provide a holder of the character specified, comprising a base and a music supporting frame provided with means for engaging beneath the front board of a piano, the base and the frame being slidably and frictionally connected to permit relative adjustment of the frame when the base is in engagement with a fixed support and of the base when the frame is engaged with a piano.

The present embodimentof the invention comprises a base 1 of wood or metal or the like of suitable length and width, the base in the present instance having a flange or rib 2 at its rear side edge, the said rib or flange extending above the upper face of the base a sufficient distance to form a firm support for the bottom of the folio.

An approximately U-shaped bracket or standard is connected with the base at its center, the said bracket or standard compris ing arms 3, extending approximately parallel with each other, and a body provided with a depending loop 4 having a coil 5 at the body of the loop. The arms of the loop and the coil composing the body of the bracket or standard are connected to the arms 3 by arches 6, and the coil is formed by bending the material of the bracket or standard upon itself as shown. Each of the arms 3 is provided at its lower end with an angular lug 7 which laps upon the under face of the base at the rear thereof, and the lugs are held to the base by means of a bearing plate 8, the said bearing plate engaging both lugs and being secured to the base by a single screw 9 between the lugs.

A substantially rectangular frame is adjustably connected with the bracket or standard, the said frame being formed from wire bent to form a bottom bar or member 10, side bars 11 and a sectional top bar consisting of Specification of Letters Patent.

portions 12 in alinement with each other, but separated at their inner ends, and the lnner end of each of the said bars is integral with a central bar 13, whose lower end is bent under the bottom bar 10 from front to rear, as shown.

The frame is formed by bending the wire as described, and the central bars 13 are connected at their lower ends by a plate 14, the said plate being arranged in rear of the brackets or standards, and above the bottom bar 10. he bottom bar 10 is connected to each of the top bar sections 12 by means of a vertically arranged plate 15, the ends of the plates 15 being bent to form bearings 16, for engaging the said bars 10 and 12. Each of the plates 15 is provided with a central longitudinally extending reinforcing rib 17.

A plurality of arms 18 is connected with the bottom bar 10, one of the said arms being arranged on each side of the bracket or standard. The end of each of the said arms 18 is bent over upon itself as shown at 19, around the bottom bar 10, and a screw 20 is passed through the portion 20 and engages the body of the arm to hold it in place adjustably on the bottom bar 10. Each of the arms 18 is provided with a covering or shield 21 of rubber or the like, and the said arms are arranged between the plates 15 and the arms 8 of the bracket or standard.

The frame is connected adjustably to the bracket or standard by means of bearing plates Two of the said plates are used, and each of the plates is fixed to the arms 13. One plate is arranged transversely of the said arms near the sectional top bar 12 and the other plate is arranged near the bottom bar 10.

Each plate is provided with transverse grooves 23, for receiving the bars 13, and the ends of the plates are bent into hook form as indicated at 24, to slidably engage the arms 3 of the bracket. The engagement is justtight enough to support the bracket and the base which carries the music. There is sufficient friction generated between the plates and the arms 3 to hold the bracket and the base in adjusted position.

The improved music holder may be used with a piano and in such case, the base 12 will be of wood to match the piano. As for instance with a piano of mahogany, the base will of the same wood. The base is intcrchangeable and may be removed from the bracket by loosening the single screw 9. hen so loosened, the base may be moved forwardly out of engagement with the lugs, and a base of different material connected to the stand or holder.

The arms 18 are to be inserted beneath the front board of the piano, and the said arms may be adjusted to the position desired. During shipment the said arms may be folded up into the plane of the frame 101112. The bearing plates 22 are also used as name plates, fer receiving the names of the device. or the name of the manufacturer, or the name of the piano, or any other matter that may be desired. The plate 14 is especially adapted for the manufacturers trade mark.

The loop 4 and the coil 5 constitute a spring holder for engaging in front of the music to prevent displacement of the same. The plates 15 reinforce the rack and also prevent bending or bowing of the leaves of the music. The holder may be also used as a music holder for stringed instruments, the arms 18 resting on a fixed support, as for instance, a stand. For music of different heights, the frame is moved up or down with respect to the base when the arms are on a fixed support, or the base is moved with respect to the frau'ie when the frame is engaged with a piano.

I claim 1. A music holder comprising a base plate, a bracket or standard detachably connected with the base plate intermediate the ends there-cf. said bracket or standard comprising a body and arms extending parallel with each other, each arm having at its lower end an angular lug lapping upon the under face of the base, a bearing plate en gaging both lugs and detachably connected with the base, a resilient loop depending from the body of the bracket, a music supporting frame formed from wire bent to substantially rectangular form and having a pair of spaced vertical bars extending from the top to the bottom of the frame and spaced apart a lesser distance than the arms of the brackets, bearing plates rigidly connected with the said bars and extending transversely of the bracket, each plate having a hook at its end for engaging the adjacent arm of the bracket, arms connected with the bottom of the frame at each side of the bracket, each of the said arms having a return bent portion, the bottom of the frame being received between the said return bent portion and the body of the arm, a screw passing through the said return bent portion and the body of the arm, and a covering of flexible material on each of the said arms.

A music holder comprising a base plate, a bracket or standard detachably connected with the base plate intermediate the ends thereof, said bracket or standard comprising a body and arms extending parallel with each other, each arm having at its lower end an angular lug lapping upon the under face of the base, a bearing plate engaging both lugs and detachably connected with the base, a resilient loop depending from the body of the bracket, a music sup porting frame formed from wire bent to substantially rectangular form and having pair of spaced vertical bars extending from the top to the bottom of the frame and spaced apart a lesser distance than the arms of the brackets, bearing plates rigidly connected with the said bars and extending transversely of the bracket, each plate having a hook at its end for engaging the adjacent arm of the bracket. and supporting arms for engaging beneath the front board of a piano adjustably connected with the frame at the bottom thereof.

3. A music holder, comprising a base and a substantially lJ-shaped bracket extending upwardly from the base intermediate the ends thereof. a music support comprising a substantially rectangular frame slidably connected with the standard, said frame having a pair of laterally spaced bars at approximately its center and moving alongside the sides of the standard, bearing plates arranged transversely of the said bars and rigidly connected therewith, each bearing plate having bearings for engaging the sides of the standards.
