Application filed September 12, 1913.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 31, 1914:.
Serial No. 789,484.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRIS A. FAYSSOUX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vaughan, in the county of Warren and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Car-Stakes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to car stakes and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a stake of such structure as to be easily and quickly applied to the stake pocket of a flat or gondola car and which when applied is securely held in position thereon. The stake is further provided with means for easily and quickly removing the same from the stake pocket.
With the above objects in view the stake comprises a body member having in its side a channel in which is slidably mounted 'a bar. A lever is fulcrumed to the body member and is operatively connected with the bar by means of a link. The body member is provided at one end with a socket which is adapted to receive the stake pocket of the car and when in position the lever may be swung whereby the bar may be projected or inserted into the stake pocket whereby the stake is securely held in position upon the pocket.
In the accompanying drawingsz-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the stake. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the stake. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same out on the line 33 of Fig.2. FigJlis a similar view out on the line 47-4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a similar view out on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
The stake is adapted to be used in combination with a stake pocket of any conventional form and an example of which is illustrated at A in the drawing.
The stake comprises a body member 1 which is provided at its inner side with a groove 2 having under out side flanges 3 which receive flanges A of a bar 5. The bar 5 is slidably mounted in the said groove and is provided with a longitudinally disposed slot 6 which receives a pin 7 secured in the body 1. The body 1 is provided in one side with an opening 8 in which is pivoted a lever 9. A link 10 pivotally connects the inner end of the lever 9 with the upper end of the bar 5. A hook 11 is pivotally mounted upon the body member 1 and is adapted to engage the lever 9 and hold the same against swinging movement. The body member 1 is provided at its lower end with a socket 12 which is adapted to receive the stake pocket A and when the said socket is over the pocket the lever 9 may be swung so that the bar 5 is inserted down into the pocket A. A pin 13 attached to a chain 14 is connected with the body 1 and may be inserted through the lower end of the bar 5 when it is in the pocket whereby it is impossible to withdraw the bar 5 from the pocket until the said pin has been removed from the same.
In view of the description it will be seen that a stake of simple structure is provided and that the same may be easily and quickly applied to or detached from a stake pocket and when in position thereon is securely held so that the material loaded upon the car be tween the stakes cannot become accidentally displaced therefrom.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. A stake comprising a body member provided with a groove and having at its end a socket said groove having undercut shoulders, a bar having shoulders slidably engaging the first mentioned shoulders said bar being slidably mounted in the groove.
2. A stake comprising a body member provided with a groove and having at its end a socket a bar slidably mounted in the groove, a lever fulcrumed upon the body member and a link pivotally connecting one end of the lever with one end of the bar.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARRIS A. FAYSSOUX.
