' 'To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK AN'roNUCoIo, citizen of the United States, residing at Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-v device of this character which embodies novel. features of construction whereby the water in a tank or boiler can be quickly and economically heated by means of a gas burner.
A further object of the invention is to provide a water heater of this character which is comparatively simple and inexpensive in its construction, which comprises few and durable parts which can be readily taken apart or assembled, and which provides a. lar e heating surface for the water.
ith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:-
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a hot water heater constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the up er heating drum. Fig. 3 is a similar view of) the lower heatin drum, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectiona view through the burner.
Corresponding and like parts are referred -to in the following description and indicated in all the views ofthe drawings bythe same reference characters.
Specifically describing the present embodiment of the inventlon, the numeral 1 y designates a tank or boiler which is arranged in an upright position and su orted upon a suitable stand 2. This boiler is provided at the top thereof with an outlet pipe. 3 through which thehot water can be withdrawn from the boiler, and also with an inlet'pipe 4 which serves to Aconvey cold water to the boiler and extends downwardly within the boiler to a point toward the bottom thereof so that the cold water is prevented from mixing directly with the hot water which may have accumulated at the top of the boiler.
The bottom 5 ,of the boiler has a substantially bell shaped constructionand projects upwardly within the boiler so as to provide a large heating surface for the water. The upper end of the hollow or bellshaped bottom 5 communicates through an offset member with anexhaust pipe 7 which extends upwardly through the top of the boiler.
The burner is arranged within the lower portion of the hollow or bell shaped bottom 4 and the products of combustion passing through the offset 6 and exhaust pipe 7 will serve to heat the said members so as to aid in heating the water which is in direct contact therewith. This burner 8 is connected with a gas supply pipe 9 and a pilot 10 is provided for convenience in lighting the burner. The burner plate 8a is of peculiar construction, being formed with the as outlet openings 11 and the annular poc iets 12, the said annular pockets serving to collect any moisture or drippings due to sweating of the pipes or heating drums so as to prevent the moisture from entering the interior of the burner .and interfering with the proper operation thereof.
An upper heating drum A and a lower heating drum B are arranged within the hollow or bell shaped bottom 5 and disposed above the burner 8, so as to be acted upon by the same. These two heating drums are connected by a pipe 13, the top of theupper heating drum A being connected to and in communication with a circulation pipe 14 which extends u wardly into the boiler and toward the top t ereof, while the bottom of the lower drum B is connected to and in communication with a vertical pipe 15 which extends* downwardly through the central opening 16 of the burner 8 and communicates with a lateral supply pipe 17, extending through the side of the bell shaped bottom 5 and communicating with the interior of the boiler 1. The various pipes 14, 13, and 15 are all vertically disposed and in substantial alinement with each other and the cooler water enters the lower drum B of the boiler 1 and as it becomes heated within the drums A and B circulates upwardly and finally passes through the upper pipe 14 to the top ofthe boiler. In this way a circulation of water is automatically provided within the boiler as long as the burner 8 remains lighted.
With regard to the upper circulation pipe 14 it will be observed that this pipe is fitted within a bushing 18 which extends through and is threaded within an opening in the offset member 6, the said bushing and pipe preferably being arranged substantially at the vertical axis of the boiler.
The lower heating drum B is preferably an integral member so as to avoid the necessity for a multiplicity of joints which would be liable to cause leakage. This lower heating drum B is formed with a series of laterally curved and substantially semicircular arms or passages 19 which'are arranged in vertical planes radiating from the axis of the drum, the said arms establishing communication between the top and bottom of'the drum which are spaced from each other to admit of the products of combustion and hot air circulating freely around the curved arms and between the top a'nd bottom of the drum. At the bottom of the drum where the lower ends of the several curved arms meetl the drum is connected to the lower vertical pipe 15, while at the top of the drum where the upper ends of theseveral curved arms 19 moet, connection is made with the pipe 13 which leads to the upper drumy A. This upper drum A comprises a substantially hemispherical top 20, the bottom thereof being formed with a'vdownwardly facing pocket 21 which serves to `catch and collect the heated products of combustion rising from the burner. A series of quadrants or arms 22 which are arrangedin vertical planes radiating from the axis of the drum serve to connect edge portions ofV the top 20 with`thebottom of the drum where the said quadrants ork arms Q2 meet and the drum is connected to the pipe 13.

In the operation of the heater, it will be obvious that when the burner 8 is lighted, the heat therefrom will act, as before mentioned, to heat the hollow bottom 5 and the exhaust pipe 7 and will also act upon the' upper and lower heating drums A and B to heat the water within the same. Owing to the exceptionally large heating surface provided by the peculiar construction of these upper and lower heating drums, the water therein will be'thoroughly and quickly heated so asto rise through the pipe 14 to the top of the boiler 1. The hot water which thus enters the top of the boiler from the heating drums is replaced by cooler water which enters the lower drum Bythrough the lateral pipe 17 and lower vertical pipe 15.l
. Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a water heater, a heating drum including an upper hollow and substantially hemispherical head having a convex upper surface and a concave lower surface, the latter providing a closed downwardly facing pocket, a lower head arranged axially under the upper head, aseries of vertically disposed and substantially quadrant shaped curved arms connecting the edges of the upper head to the lower head, the arms having flat outer and inner faces which are continuations of the curvature of the corresponding surfaces of the upper head, and axially disposed circulation pipes connected to the upper head and lower head respectively.
2. A water heater including a. boiler' formed with a concave bottom, an offset member communicating with the top of the concave bottom, a flue extendingxfrom the offset. member through the top of the boiler, a bushingextending through the offset member and arranged substantially axially with respect to the lower end thereof, a circulation pipe extendingthrough the bushing and fitting tightly therein, a heating drum arranged within the hollow. bottom of the boiler and connected with the circulation pipe, and a burner, .the products of combustion from the burner escaping through ythe offset and flue.
