Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 10, 1914.
Application filed January 26, 1910. Serial No. 540,180.
To all whom it may comer 12.:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. Drr'ronn, residing at Madisonville, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Pockets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to paper cigar pockets designed to inclose one or more cigars and to afford the same protection to thecigars which is afforded by the cigar cases made of leather or other more expensive material.
Series cigar pockets are usually so made that, when filled, the sides of the pockets are pressed closely against each other and the cigars closely wedged together. This, when the pockets are carried in the pocket of the buyer, produces a rubbing action which is injurious to the wrappers. The close contact also makes it difficult to withdraw the cigar, and the wrappers are frequently injured in the withdrawal. In order to protect the cut ends of cigars the pockets are usually made at least as long as the cigars. When so made, with the top of the cigars surrounded, or even when surrounded on but three sides, it is almost impossible to remove the cigar without injuring its end.
One object, of my invention is to provide series cigar pockets in which the individual pockets, when filled will be held out of contact with each other and separated by an air space, thus avoiding any rubbing contact.
Another object is to provide a series cigar pocket which protects the cigar throughout its length, but leaves the end of the cigar free on two opposite sides so that it may be easily removed without danger of injury.
Another object is to provide a series of double walled pockets which may be detached as readily as the ordinary single walled separable pockets.
My invention consists in the parts and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective front view showing a separable series of cigar pockets embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a rear view of the same; Fig. 3 a front elevation of the same, broken away to show the position of the contained cigar; Fig. 4: a rear perspective view showing a series of pockets which may be separable or inseparable; Fig. 5 an end view with a cigar inclosed; and
Fig o a top plan view of the pocket shown in Flgs. l and t, with cigars inclosed.
The pockets are made in series, each series consisting of a plurality of individual pockets 1, preferably made from a single piece of soft flexible paper and pasted parallel with each other to each side of a double backing sheet 2 of comparatively stifi paper. The free edges 3, of the backing extend a substantial distance above the upper ends of the individual pockets 1, and somewhat above the end of the contained cigars. The flexible pockets are preferably made short enough to receive cigars of varying lengths and still leave the end of the shorter cigars projecting a substantial distance. By bending the free edges of the backing sheet slightly outward, the projecting end of the cigar may be readily grasped and the cigar withdrawn without danger of injuring its end. The individual pockets are arranged at such distance from each other that, when expanded by insertion of a cigar a substantial space 4 is left between the adjacent pockets which space is maintained by the'stiff double walls so that the pockets are separated by an air space and the cigar wrappers cannot be injured by rubbing of the filled pockets against each other. The backings may be slitted, perforated or indented on parallel lines between the individual pockets to permit easy detachment. I prefer, however, to form the weakening lines on one side of the pouch by a series of somewhat elongated slits or cuts 5 and to cut the other side of the backing from top to bottom, as indicated at 6, thus securing the additional protection of a stiff double wall, but rendering the pockets as easily separable as the ordinary single walled pockets.
Certain features of my invention are equally applicable to detachable and nondetachable pockets.
It will be noted that my improved pouch protects the cigar from end to end by stiff walls and yet leaves the cigar more readily accessible than in the more expensive leather pouch, inasmuch as the cigars are always held apart; the cigars are not bound in any way, and are easily removable without injury to the wrapper or end.
I claim as my invention 1. A detachably connected series of cigar pockets consisting of a plurality of individual compartments made of flexible paper and secured to the walls of a double backing 3. A series of cigar pockets consisting of a plurality of 1nd1v1dual compartments made of soft flexible paper and secured to the Walls of a double backing sheet, one side of the backing sheet being provided with weak ening lines of separation between the adja cent compartments, and the other side being disconnected.
4. A connected series of cigar pockets consisting of a plurality of individual compartments made of flexible paper and secured at spaced intervals to the walls of a double backing sheet, the space between the inclividual compartments being suflicient to hold them out 01'' contact when expanded, one side of the backing sheet being provided with weakening lines of separation between the adjacent compartments, and the other side being disconnected.
