1N VENTOR A TTOR NE Y L. G. STANLEY POCKET CASE Patented Mar. 17, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEOPOLD GEORGE STANLEY, OF NEW "YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO STANLEY & STANLEY, ING., or. NEW YORK, N. a QORPORATION or NEW Yoan.
rocKET casa l Application filed October 4, 1923. Serial N0, 666,482.
To fwhom'z't may concern.:
Be it known that I, LEOPOLD GEORGE STANLEY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, resident of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket Cases, of which the following is a specification.
This inventionrelates to imlirovements in pocket cases. It is particularly intended for use as a cigarette holder, but may be 'used for other purposes.
The object of the invention is to produce, preferably out of leather, at an economic manufacturing cost, a case in which cigarettes or other articles carried may have their upper ends o-r portions freely exposed and readily accessible and at the same time protected from injury in the closed case.
In theaccompanying drawings forming a part hereof and illustrating my invention:
Fig. l is a perspective view of my new case with its cover flap partially open. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the ease closed at a line corresponding to line 2-2 of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section of what is shown in Fig. 2 at line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. Il is an end view of the case closed.
Fig. 5 is ai perspective view of the oiga rette or article container detached and shown spaced apart from a bottom forming strip and case side spacing member.
In the drawings, the case is maderup of four main members which when of leather are cemented together in the completed asbottom and at each end of the casing. The
sides are initially formed into a laterally bulging shape whereby in the assemblage the front and back sides, while parallel in their main extent, severally swell outwardly from their stitched, marginal portions. The back side 2 is extended upwardly into a somewhat narrowed portion which forms a freely bendable cover flap 2", dimensioned to be folded over the front side 0f the sng and to be .secured in closed position or in any suitable manner, or not secured at all. As shown, the free portion of the cover flap may be tucked in a transverse loop 4 to hold it in place or may be secured to the front wall of the easing by the complementary fastener members 4a and 4". The front side is upwardly extended into a. marginal, forwardly bendable flap 1a which forms a side guard for the upper ends of the cigarettes or other articles contained in the holder. It is opposed, when folded upright, to a back, marginal portion 2 of the cover flap which forms a back guard for the exposed ends of the articles carried in the holder when the cover flap is folded down. The cover flap is bendable from end to end, this bend forming the top edge of the case when it is closed.
The holder or container for cigarettes or other articles is made up. of two spaced apart pieces of leather' forming the front and back sides of the container. These sides are shaped to stand away one from another, their under edges are flexible and their upper edges 7 are transversely aligned one with another throughout their length and are curved upwardly at their ends providing the holder with upstanding, projecting` end portions 8 above the general level of the upper edges 7 between the ends 8. The end margins of the front and back sides 5 are stitched together at S).
' In order to stiffen the container between its front and back sides and thus prevent injury tothe cigarettes by accidental pressure on the sides of the case, these side-s1 are braced apart byl a leather brace Vwhich also ties the sides 5 together. The brace extendspart way from the top edges 7 of the container to the under or bottom edges thereof. The brace is made up of two strips of bendable leather, each given a lengthwise troughed form in the bracing assemblage. The bottom wall 1U of one troughed member has parallel, bendable side flanges l1. and 12. The bottom wall '1.3 of the other troughed member is glued to the wall 10 and has parallel, flange forming portions 14 and 15. The front, iange forming portions 11 and 15 are carried forwardly through a slot 7% in the front wall 5 and the back" flanges 12 and 14 are carried through a similar slot 7 u in the back wall 5, the cemented together mented thereto. The vertical, interior-Walls:-
12 and 13 divide the holder into two chambers and serve to brace the sides1i5`s apart..
