To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALVIN H. BLooD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aberdeen, in the county of Chehalis and State of l/Vashington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pencil Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to pencil attachments and more particularly to the class of cigar cutter attachments for pencils.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of an attachment of this character in which the tip of a cigar may be readily cut on the manipulation of the attachment, the latter being readily and easily mounted upon a pencil of the ordinary well-known construction.

Another object of the invention is the provision of an attachment of this character in which an eraser may be mounted and can be readily applied to the end of a pencil so as to be convenient for use in cutting cigars and also that will permit the pencil to be fastened within a pocket to avoid the possibility of the accidental loss thereof.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a pencil attachment of this character which is simple in construction, reliable and efficient in its purpose and ineX- pensive in manufacture.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.

ln the drawings: Figure l is a side elevation of a pencil showing the attachment constructed in accordance with the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical longitudinal sectional view through the attachment. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view through the stationary ferrule or tube. Fig. 5 is a similar view through the movable or outer ferrule or tube.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, 5 designates a pencil which is of the ordinary well-known construction and on the blunt end of which is adapted to be mounted the attachment which comprises an inner ferrule or tube 6, the same being formed with a slot 7 opening through one end to permit the insertion of the pencil 5 therein, whereby the said ferrule or tube 6 may be firmly clamped upon the blunt end of said pencil, while cut in one side of the ferrule or tube 5 is a substantially elliptical shaped opening or hole 8 the edge of which is beveled to form a cutting edge 9 for a purpose presently described.

Surrounding the fer-rule or tube 6 is an outer movable tube or sleeve 10, the same being of greater length than the ferrule or tube 6 and has mounted in its outer end an eraser tip 11 which is of the ordinary wellknown construction, while formed in one side of the tube or sleeve 10 is a curved slot 12 into which projects one end of a guide pin 13, the same being stationarily mounted transversely in the ferrule or tube G, so that on moving the sleeve or tube 10 the latter will be caused to turn upon the stationary ferrule or tube for a purpose present-ly described.

Formed in the sleeve or tube l() spaced from the slot l2 therein is an opening or orifice 14C which is adapted to normally aline with the opening 8 and is designed to receive the pointed end of a cigar so that when moving the sleeve or tube l() the said pointed end of the cigar will be cut on the Contact thereof with the cutting edge 9 of the opening S. The turning of the sleeve or tube 10 effects a shearing cutting action on the cutting edge 9 by reason of the peculiar shape of the opening 8 so as to positively cut the pointed end of the cigar without the possibility of the tearing or otherwise mutilation thereof.

Arranged interiorly of the sleeve or tube 10 at the inner end thereof is a curved tension or compression spring 15, one end of which is xed to the sleeve or tube l0, while its opposite free end frictionally engages upon the inner end edge of the ferrule or tube 6, so that on moving the sleeve or tube l0 upon the latter in one direction the spring 15 will be compressed or tensioned so that when releasing' the sleeve or tube 10 the latter will be automatically moved to position for bringing the openings 8 and 1A in normal alinement with each other. This spring 15 encircles the pencil body 5 between the outer circumference thereof and the inner' wall of the tube or sleeve 10 and is for the purpose hereinbefore described.

Cut or struck out from the sleeve or tube 10 is a resilient finger 16, forming a clip whereby the pencil may be fastened in the pocket so as to avoid the accidental dropping of the said pencil from such pocket when the pencil is not in use. Also this finger 16 serves as a finger rest whereby the sleeve or tube l() can be manipulated or moved when in the act oit' cutting the pointed end or tip from a cigar.

lt is of course understood that the eraser tip l1 is used in the ordinary Well-known manner when desired.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings7 it is thought that the construction and operation or" the invention Will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.

wWhat is claimed is pencil attachment comprising an inner tube having a substantially elliptical shaped opening extending through the outer edge thereof, a portion of the edge of the opening being beveled, an outer tube movabiy supported upon the inner tube and telescoped upon the same, the said outer tube being provided With a curved slot, a pin stationariiy mounted in the inner tube and projected into the curved slot for rotating the said outer tube on pulling outwardly upon the same, the said outer tube being further provided with a circular opening normally in alinement with the opening in the inner tube, and a spring member having one end iXed to the outer tube and its opposite end slidably engaging the inner end edge of the inner tube to operate upon the said tubes for the moving of the outer tube into position to bring its opening in` alinement with the opening in the inner tube.
