MARGARETI-IE TOTH, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
HAIR-FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARGARETIIE TO'II-I,
a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in toothed hair fasteners of the more valuable kind or such as are especially decorative in effect and the invention consists in the said fastener provided with means to prevent accidental loss or removal by another person without being noticed by the wearer, all substantially as shown and described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a two-pronged fastener showing one embodiment of the invention, and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation partially sectioned away at its top to disclose the internal safety parts.
The fastener C may be of any desired style or kind having teeth and the particular illustration thereof herein belongs to those of the more expensive and elaborate kind and which often are studded with precious stones and have great intrinsic value. It is therefore important to have means for fixing such fasteners in the hair so that they cannot be lost out accidentally and that they cannot be removed by any person without first disengaging the securing means from the hair. This construction operates as a precaution against having the same stolen from the hair because an outside party cannot disengage the fastener without its being felt by the wearer. To these several ends I employ suitable fastening means, say as seen in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. In this construction there is a depressible member 6 made from sheet metal and inserted in a recess formed be tween the sides of the fastener, front and rear, and open between said sides about the edge thereof, and said member 6 is located centrally in said recess or slot and has a stem 2 projecting above the edge of the fastener and within which there is a small spiral spring 3 which rests on a fixed cross pin or portion 4 and is otherwise located in a slot in said member 6 and in lifting relations therewith, so that normally said member sustains the position seen in Fig. 2.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 19, 1911.
Patented Mar. 3, 1914.
Serial No. 639,259.
Anchoring devices 5 of substantially hook shape are pivoted together on a cross pin 6 and are provided with projections 7 outside their pivots and resting in the ends of the transverse portion of the cross-shaped slot in said depressible member Z). The said anchors 5 have tapered and more or less curved fingers adapted to swing substantially together at their points and to be re tired within the recess of the fastener when disengaged. It follows that when member 7) is depressed by hearing the finger on its stem 2 that said fingers will open laterally, as in Fig. 3, and become disengaged, and it also follows that when pressure is withdrawn from said stem 2 the spring 3 will lift said member I) and automatically close the said fingers as seen in Fig. 1, and thus engage in the hair.
For the foregoing purposes I provide the fastener with a closure m of thin metal or the like which is inserted between the sides thereof about the edge of said recess and serves as a stop to the outward movement of the depressible member I).
What Iclaim is:
A hair fastener for ladies wear having teeth and a central recess in its top, a pair of substantially hook-shaped fingers and a single fixed pivot in said recess on which said fingers are pivotally mounted at their inner ends and adapted to swing back and forth on the arcs of the same circle, the said fingers having each a lateral actuating projection on its inner end and lying on the opposite side of said pivot from the main portions of the finger, in combination with a depressible member having a substantially cross-shaped slot with the cross portion thereof at its bottom and said lateral projections engaged in the cross portion of said slot, a fixed stop on the fastener in the said recess and a spring in the stem of said slot seated on said step and in lifting relations with said depressible member at its top to raise the said member and throw said fingers into engaging relations when pressure on said member is relieved.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
