Be it lrnown that I, PETER ALBANO, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cool; and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tables, of which the following is al specification.

My invention relates to tables of the extension type, and my object, generally stated, is to provide a novel and simple construction of extension table, the sections of the top of which, by preference, are self-con tained in the table, thereby avoiding the objectionable use of top sections, or boards, separate from the table, which require storing when not in`use.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a table constructed in accordance with my invention, the full line representation of the top sections thereof showing one of the top sections in the position it assumes when the table is contracted and the other section thereof in the position it assumes when extended to coperate with other sections to form the extended top. Fig. 2 is a section taken at the line 2 on Fig. 1 and viewed in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 3 is a section taken at the line 3 on Fig. 4 and viewed in the direction of the arrow, this view showing a desirable form of lock for securing certain of the top sections of the table together when in extended condition. Fig. 4 is a top plan view showing the table in extended condition, portions of the tabletop being broken away; and Fig. 5 a section taken at the line 5 on Fig. 4 and viewed in the direction of the arrow.

`The base of the table, the dimensions of which, in accordance with the preferred embodiment of my invention, remain unchanged in extending the table, is represented at 6. As shown, it is formed of four legs 7 located at its corners and which, in practice, would be preferably braced together, and a frame-section at its upper end secured to the legs 7 and composed of the side and end- pieces 8 and 9 respectively, a bar section 10 extending longitudinally of the base and connected at its ends with the end-pieces 9, and transversely extending sections 11 located intermediate the ends of the table and connected with the side-pieces 8 and bar 10, the inner surfaces of the side- Speeication of Letters Patent.

pieces 8 and the bar section 10 containing longitudinally extending grooves 12 whichV extend thereof.

The ytop of the table is formed of four sections 13, 14, 15, and 16 of the same dimensions, mounted on the base 6, and extending longitudinally of the grooves 12. The said top sect-ions are connected. together in pairs, the sections 14 and 16 being superposed on the sections 13 and 15, respectively, when the table is in contracted condition. The sections 13r and 15 carry, on their under sides, longitudinally extending bars 17 provided with tongues 18 ,Quidedly confined in the grooves 12 in the side sections 8 and bar 10, and are connecd along their inner edges with the sections 14 and 16, respectively, by hinges 19, whereby when the pairs of top sections, connected together. as described, are slid in opposite directions on the base 6 to extend the table, as hereinafter described, the sections 14 and 15 may be swung on t-he respective sections 13 and 16 to occupy the spaces thus produced at the diagonally disposed corners of the table top.

The tongue-equipped bars 17 are preferably of such length and so positioned that when the sections 13 and 14 and 15 and 16 occupy positions wherein they extend side by side, namely when the table is in contracted condition, will abut against certain of the legs 7 as illustrated of the pair of connected top sections 13 and 14 at the lefthand side of Fig. 1, and when shifted to the position for properly positioning them for forming the extended table top will abut at their opposite ends against the legs 7 at the other ends of the base, in which condition the inner ends of the pairs of top sections occupy a position intermediate the ends of the base 6, as illustrated of the connected sections 15 and 16 at the right in Fig. 1, and thus will be substantially in alinement.

In the. normal contracted condition of the table, the sections 14 and 15 extend in superposed condition on the sections 13 and 16, respectively, and these pairs of connected top sections extend side by side and centrally of the base 6, as illustrated of the full-line representation of sections 18 and 14 in the upper half of Fig. 1 and the dotted line representations of the sections 15 and 16 in approximately the full length the lower part of this figure, the table top thus produced being of a length corresponding with the length of any one of the four Sections of the table top. To extend the table the operator slides the pairs of connected table sections at their tongue and groove connections with the base in opposite directions to a point where the bars 17 carried thereby abut against posts S at oppolo site ends of the table, in which position the sections and 1G assume the position represented by full lines in Fig. 1, and the sections 13 and 14 assume the position illusl trated by dotted lines in said figure. Thus V15 operating thetop sections produces diagonally disposed spaces at the corners of the table which are adapted to be filled by swinging the sections 14 and 15 in opposite directions at their hinged fconnectionsl 19 with 20 the sections 13 and 16, respectively, thereby producing a rectangular table top of an area equal to the total area of the four sections forming the top of the table.

lf desired, the sections 14 and 15 may be 2.5 locked to the sections 13 and 16 to render the structure stable and prevent accidental lifting of the sections 14 and 15. Any suitable means for this purpose may be employed, those shown comprising slide pins or bolts 2O guidedly conned in casings 21 .n anddwavdapted to be projected into sockets 22 in casing members 23, the casing 21 and 223 being arranged toaline with each other when the table top is extended, as represented in Fig. 4.

"While I prefer to provide the superposed hinged sections forming parts of the table top for filling up the diagonally disposed spaces at the corners thereof, when these sections of the table top which are guidedly connected with the base are moved in opposite directions to extend the table, it will be understood that, if desired, the diagonally disposed spaces referred to may be filled by top sections of suitable dimensions and disconnected from the sections 13 and 1G. Furthermore, in carrying out the preferred embodiment of my. invent-ion wherein the sect-ions of the table-top are self-contained in the table, the arrangement of the underlying and superposed table-top sections may be variously modified and altered without departing from the spirit of my invention.

VVha-t I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. ln a table, the combination of a' nonextensible base provided with guide-means, and a top therefor formed of sections certain of which are superposed on, and hingedly connected with, the others thereof, said sections engaging said guide-means when said top is contracted and extended and movable on said base in opposite directions in parallel planes.

2. In a table, the combination of a base and a top therefor formed of sections, certain of which are superposed on and hingedly connected at their inner edges with the others thereof, said sections being guidedly supported on said base to be movable thereon in opposite directions in parallel planes.

ln a table, the combination of a base and a top therefor formed of a pair of underlying sections and a pair of superposed sections hingedly connected at their inner edges with said underlying sections at the inner edges of the latter, said pair of underlying sections being guidedly connected with said base to be movable thereon with said superposed sections in opposite directions and in parallel planes.

4. In a table, the combination of a base and a top therefor formed of sections arranged side by side cert-ain of said sections being superposed on, and hingedly connected at their inner edges with, the others thereof, said sections being guidedly confined on said base to be movable thereon longitudinally of each other in opposite directions in parallel planes.

5. ln a table, the combination of a base and a top therefor formed of a pair of underlying sections and a pair of superposed sections hingedly connected at their inner edges with said underlying sections at the inner edges of the latter, said pair of underlying sections being arranged normally side by side and guidedly connected with said base to be movable thereon with said super posed sections longitudinally of each other and in opposite directions in parallel planes.
