To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD C. MYERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at W'aynesboro, in the county of Augusta and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stationery; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the 1nvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in stationery and particularly to envelope, and the object of my invention is to so construct and arrange an envelop that a metal fastening device may be clenched inside of the several parts of the envelop after it is closed.

A further object of my invention is to so construct an envelop with one or more apertures, through which a portion of a stap mg machine is inserted, and with flaps whereby the apertures may be covered from view and protected.

Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter made clearly apparent in the specification and pointed out in the claim.

A still further object of my invention is to provide an envelop having its several flaps in lapped relation and having registering openings through the several flaps, so that when the portions are secured together, these several openings becom as a single opening through the relatively thick portion of the envelop which comprises the several lapped portions, and, a still further object is to provide for clenching the staple through the relatively thick portion and through the closure flap, and thereby, to insure the maximum strength of the stapled portion.

In the accompanying drawings I have shown the preferred forms which my invention may take.

In said drawings, Figure l is a plan View, showing the construction of an envelop made in accordance with my invention, said envelop being similar in construction to the envelops used by express companies for the transmission of money. Fig. 2 is a plan view similar to Fig. 1, showing the flaps of the envelop secured in place. Fig. 3 is a sectional view as seen on line 3-8, Fig. 2.

In referring to the drawings I have employed numerals of reference to designate the corresponding parts.

I construct an envelop having a front 6 or main portion, upon which the address is to be placed, and a back which consists of a back portion 7, and side flaps 8. Each of the flaps 8 is adapted to be folded upon the back portion 7 after the latter has been folded against the main portion 6. The flaps 8 each consist of a major section 8 and a minor section 8, the latter being folded upon the former when the envelop is closed, and the section 8 is gummed, so as to adhere to the section 8. The closure flaps 9 and 10 and sections 8 are preferably distin guished from the body of the envelop by coinciding score lines, as indicated at 11, so that said flaps may be easily and accurately folded upon the back of the envelop, while the flap 10 is provided with a gummed edged portion which extends beyond the coinciding edges of the flap 9 and section 8. In this form of envelop I provide the flap 10 with a plurality of gummed extensions 12, which, when the flap has been secured in folded position, are adapted to cover the registering slits or entrance openings 13, the latter extending through the back elements of the envelop, but not through the front or main portion thereof.

When it is desired to seal the envelop, the sections 8 and flaps 9 and 10 are folded upon the back of the envelop and secured in place by inserting an anvil of a suitable stapling device through the entrance openings 13, and thereby forcing the staples through the flaps 9 and 10', sections 8 and 82 and back portion 7 so that the staples extend through five thicknesses of the material, and are clenched within the envelop. The extensions 12 are then caused to adhere ,to the back of the envelop, so as to effectually close, conceal and guard the entrance openings. The clenched ends of the staples being positioned inside of the envelop, it will be impossible to successfully tamper with the same without such tampering being easily detected.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided means for securing the overlapped portions of an envelop so that should any one tamper with said securing means, such tampering would be apparent. It will also be seen that I have so constructed an envelop that the overlapped portions thereof may be easily stapled through, means being provided to effectually conceal the opening through which the stapling machine is inserted. It will also be seen that by providing the gummed extensions of the top flap of the envelop, it will be impossible to tamper with the ends of the staple without first steaming said extension to soften the glue thereon.

WVhile I have shown and described my invention in connection with envelops, I desire it to be understood that the same may be used in connection with bundle or box wrappers so that the same may be secured in place.

What I claim as new is:

An envelop providing a main portion, a back portion, folded thereupon, side flaps folded upon the back portion in spaced relation, and a gummed closure flap provided with gummed extensions at its ends and one at its middle, said side flaps and back portion being provided with registering openings, and said back portion provided with an opening spaced from said side flaps, the upper portions of said side flaps and back portion adapted to fold over, whereby said gummed extensions are brought over said openings, the latter adapted to receive a stapling device, whereby staples may be clenched through the back portion and side flaps, and the folded over portions of the same, and through the back central portion and folded over portion of the same between the side fiaps, the staples also passing through the closure flap, said openings adapted to be thereafter closed by said gunimed extensions.
